What a lovely place Xerox is to work! Kim Moloney, a client services executive, can?t say enough nice things about her employer. …It?s a very special environment,? she says. …People describe Xerox as a family and I was amazed at the number of people who have worked here for so long.? It?s tempting to take Moloney?s comments with a pinch of salt, especially considering that when you?ve been working somewhere for only two years, as she has at Xerox, everyone seems old and established. But there?s tr uth behind her enthusiasm.

Take Carole Palmer, the group resources director. She joined Xerox in 1978 as a temp and has bee n in her present role f or seven years. …Xerox has been good to me over the years,? she says. …It has su pported me through qualifications … and last year I took part in the vice-president incumbent program.?Human resources is taken seriously at Xerox, Palmer says, and the company has a policy of promoting from within (which would explain Moloney?s amazement at her colleagues? longevity). The company ta kes on only fifteen to twenty graduates each year and Moloney was part of an intake who joined havin

g already acquired a couple of years? work experience. She started as a project manager for Xerox Glob

al Services before moving into sales. Now her responsibility is to …grow and maintain customer relations hips?.

Moloney is based at the head office in Uxbridge. …It?s great in terms of working environment,? she says. …We?ve just got a new provider in the canteen and … we have brainstorming rooms and breakout areas.? Much of Moloney?s role is visiting clients, so she doesn?t have a permanent desk at head offic

e. …I?m a hot-desker, which is good because you get to sit with different people in the hot-desk areas.

And you?re given a place to store your things.? Head office staff numbers between 1,200 and 1,500 peo ple, Palmer says. The company has four other main offices in the UK. The nature of the organization, which encompasses sales and marketing, global services (the biggest division), developing markets, resear ch and development and manufacturing, means that the opportunities at the company vary from service e ngineers to sales roles and consultants.

Perks include a final-salary pension scheme and various discount schemes. The reward and recogniti on scheme is a little different, and rather nice: …Each manager has a budget every year to recognize and reward staff,? Palmer says. …It can be in the form of a meal for two, or a bottle of wine. It can be u p to £1,000. There?s the recognition, and then there?s putting money behind it.? Moloney, however, likes the non-cash rewards. …Xerox takes care of all its staff but it also recognizes the people who put in th

e added effort,? she says. …It offers once-in-a-lifetime incentive trips, and recently I organized a sailing tr

ip for my team.?

The idea of working abroad with the company appeals to her, and she says that her career goal is to be part of the senior management team. Here?s another employee, it would seem, who is in it for th

e long haul.

Passage Two

Even if you get work done and generally get along with co-workers, you could have habits that bu

g your boss (not to mention your officemates). While these quirks may not necessarily get you fired, th

ey certainly can keep you from climbing the corporate ladder. We?ve uncovered a number of habits that bug your boss and offer tips on how to avoid them.

According to LaRhonda Edwards, a human resources manager with thirteen years of HR experience, tar diness is one of the biggest concerns for managers. “If the normal work day starts at 8 o?clock, the n the expectation is that you?re in the office ready to start your day,” she explains. Her advice to the c hronically late? “Plan ahead,” she urges. “If you live 50 minutes away, you don?t leave 50 minutes earl y. Tag on extra time and anticipate road blocks.” Some people even set their clocks a few minutes earl y to ensure that they?re on time. Different bosses prefer different modes of communication. Lindsey P oll ak, a workplace expert and author of Getting from College to Career, says if you text your boss and sh

e prefers in-person meetings, “either your information won?t get across or you?ll irritate [her].” Fortunate

ly, there?s a simple fix: ask your boss how and when to send updates. If you?re too shy to ask outrigh t, then Pollak suggests observing how they communicate with you. “If you have a boss who communica tes once a day by email, that?s the boss? preferred frequency and method of communication,” explain s P ollak.

A cluttered, messy work space can give your boss the impression that you?re lazy or disorganized,

so try to keep your desk neat. “Never put more on your desk than you?re going to work on for the da y,” recommends Edwards. “At the end of the day, make sure you set up for the next day. I may be w orking on five things at once, but at the end of the day, they?re gone, and I set up for the next day.”

Most managers would rather you ask a question than make a mistake, but many questions can be answe red o n your own. “Is this something you could Google or ask a colleague?” wonders Pollak. “The inter net is so vast that a lot of information you can get yourself.” If you must approach your boss with a q uestion or issue, then Pollak recommends brainstorming bef orehand. “Rather than saying …This client is t errible. What should I do?? think about potential solutions,” she says.

Cell phones are practically ubiquitous in the workplace these days, but it?s still disruptive and disres pectful when they go off during a meeting. Edwards says that you should, “put your cell phone on vibr ate or leave it in your own office so it?s not a distraction.” That way you won?t be tempted to text eit her!

Well, f d have to think carefully about that but, on the whole the trip was good for me as I was the official translator, which was great as V m normally a bit shy of talking to people 1 don't know. On the last night of the holiday they treated me to a really expensive meal for helping them out. It was terrific! Jenise: Well, I guess I had a good time now when I look back on it, and I saw eight countries in four weeks. Everything went well but I think that from now on 1' 11 probably choose to do something else. I want to meet local people rather than just people who work for the train service ! I did get to know quite a few other English and American students and they were great but it didn* t do much for my French and Gennan. Nigel: I think it's definitely the best way of getting around Europe even though you have to spend money on the Inter-Rail ticket before you leave. I have a friend who hitch-hikes and he says that's the only way to travel because it's free and you see more interesting places. But I knew I could jump on a train wherever I wanted in the morning, while he would still be standing in the rain hoping for a lift. So all in all I think I got the better deal, especially as 1 could take the night train and save on hotel bills. Hawk: F vc done it quite a few times now and V m used to the kind of problems that arisc—likc having to sleep in a park because the train arrived too late for me to get a hotel bed, and trying to keep to a tight budget. The mistake people often make is to just get off at the tourist spots. Try getting off the train at the little villages, like I do. They1 re usually fascinating and the people are friendlier, too. Even if they don't understand your miserable attempt at their language they still smile and nod.

全国英语等级考试(PEST)三级笔试模拟试题及详解(二)【圣才出品】

全国英语等级考试(PEST)三级笔试模拟试题及详解(二) SECTION I Listening(略) SECTION II Reading Part A Directions: Read the following two texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET. Text 1 Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them. Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it. People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport, they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.
