B

While an entire month free of homework or tests may sound too good to be true, that is exactly what the students at Sturenskolan School in Boden, Sweden were treated to in April. What’s more, if the results of the experiment prove

encouraging, starting 2019, the middle schoolers will never have to worry about after-school work or tests, aside

2

from the national examinations, which are compulsive for students across the country.

The school’s principal, Petronella Sirkka, who came up with the idea, said, “We are constantly receiving new reports that our children feel bad. And that’s because they have a high level of stress all the time. This is our way of trying to reduce that stress.”

The educator says that while banning homework and tests sounds radical(激进的), it makes sense given the changes in the curriculum and approaches to education. While in the past students were primarily subjected to memorizing facts, learning today is all about reflection and analysis. As a result, it is often harder for kids, especially those with little support at home, to comprehend the material by themselves.

Sirkka is not the only one who believes after-school work does not help students learn. In March 2018, another principal in Canada also decided to do away with homework. They hope parents will spend the extra time reading to their kids.

While the long-term impact of the recent decisions made by the two educators remains to be seen, the experiment has already proved successful in Finland which has done away with homework, grades, and even teaching by subjects for many years. Yet, Finnish students always rank high in the PISA(Programme for International Student Assessment) tests especially in math and science but they have the least homework! Hopefully, it will only be a matter of time before US educators follow their lead and ban after-school work as well!

4. The students at Sturenskolan School had no homework in April because ________.

A. the headmaster was experimenting with her idea

B. they needed to do some experiments during the month

C. they were busy preparing for the national examinations

D. the headmaster had to carry out the government’s policy

【答案】A

根据第一段中的“an entire month free of homework or tests”和“in April”可知,该学校学生在四月份没有家庭作业和考试,第二段第一句中的“The school’s principal, Petronella Sirkka,

who came up with the idea”,可知,这个学校的校长提出来了这个想法,并且“What’s more, if the

results of the experiment prove encouraging, starting 2019, the middle schoolers will never have to

worry about after school work or tests, aside from the national examinations, which are compulsive for

3

kids, especially those with little support at home, to comprehend the material by themselves.”

故选A。

6. What does Petronella Sirkka most likely advise parents to do?

A. Help children with their homework.

B. Free children from after-school housework.

C. Spend more time reading to their children.

D. Communicate with teachers from time to time.

C

A lecture hall should be like a church-a little too dark, much too cold, and uncomfortably silent. You should

feel guilty opening your water bottle, because all 200 people in the room can hear it.

So when I’m trying to pay attention, the last thing you should be doing is carrying on a conversation about your last weekend party or anything else.

During the past school term, I’ve had enough. One of my biggest complaints of large class sizes is the tendency for three to five friends to sit together and loudly whisper each others’ ears off for an hour and 15 minutes straight. My stupid monkey brain can’t help but focus on your conversation about the difference between ash blonde and light blonde colored hair that look exactly the same.

To me, it just feels like a waste. You’re actively wasting money, and missing vital information. We(and the government)pay quite a lot for our education, but you are here to ignore someone significantly more experienced than us, in classes we picked, for hours every week.

I know major requirements can be boring, but this is still an education. It requires two-way effort. Most of students here have at least one goal in common: success. Not every checkpoint on that path is going to be filled with joy. Sit down, shut up, and force yourself to listen to your professor. Society tells us it will eventually pay off.

Or maybe it won’t because you don’t want to.

I actually don’t care if you decide to pay little or no attention to the lecture itself, so long as you’re not being disturbing.

For those willing to try, in 20 years when you finally pay off your debt with your fairly secure white-collar job, you’ll look back and be happy that you went through the lectures.

8. Why is a lecture hall compared to a church by the author?

A. Both places are open to the public.

B. Both places are supposed to be quiet.

C. Both places can seat over 200 people.

D. Both places help rid people of their guilt.

从第一段“uncomfortably silent”“You should feel guilty opening your water bottle,

because all 200 people in the room can hear it.”

9. What can we infer about the author from the passage?

A. He likes persuading others.

B. He tends to make complaints.

C. He values education as a duty.

D. He cares much about friendship.

从第五段“I know major requirements can be boring, but this is still an education. It requires two-way effort”,和“Society tells us it will eventually pay off.”

10. How does the author feel when writing the passage?

A. Annoyed.

B. Deserted.

C. Thrilled.

D. Worried.

【答案】A

I actually don’t care if you decide to pay little or no attention to the lecture itself, so long as you’re not being disturbing,可以得出,“我”对周围同学态度是:只

故选A项。

11. What may be the best title for the text?

A. Hard Work Pays Off!

B. Focus on the Lectures!

C. Wasting Your Time Is a Shame!

D. Mind Your In-Class Behavior!

I know major requirements can be

boring, but this is still an education.及Sit down, shut up, and force yourself to listen to your professor.

Society tells us it will eventually pay off.

D

In order to help cope with the vast number of student questions in the online class, Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence, Professor Ashok Goel of Georgia Tech developed an artificially intelligent teaching assistant. This online course is a core requirement of Georgia Tech’s online Master of Science in Computer Science program.

Professor Goel already had eight teaching assistants, but that wasn’t enough to handle the vast number of daily

6

questions from students.

Many students drop out of online courses because of the lack of teaching support. When students feel isolated or confused and reach out with questions that go unanswered, their motivation to continue begins to fade. Professor Goel decided to do something to remedy this situation and his solution was to create a virtual assistant named Jill Watson, which is based on the IBM Watson platform.

Goel and his team developed several versions of Jill Watson before releasing her to the online forums. At first, the virtual assistant wasn’t too great. But Goel and his team sourced the online discussion forum to find all the 40,000 questions that had ever been asked since the class was launched. Then they began to feed Jill with the questions and answers. After some adjustment and ample time, Jill was able to answer the students’ questions correctly 97% of the time. The virtual assistant became so advanced and realistic that the students didn’t know she was a computer. The students, who were studying artificial intelligence, were interacting with the virtual assistant and couldn’t tell it from a real human being. Goel didn’t inform them about Jill’s true identity until April 26. The students were actually very positive about the experience.

The goal of Professor Goel’s virtual assistant next year is to take over answering 40% of all the questions posed by students on the online forum. The name Jill Watson will, of course, change to something else next semester. Professor Goel has a much rosier forecast on the future of artificial intelligence than, say, Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates or Steve Wozniak.

12. What do we learn about Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence?

A. It is a robot that can answer students’ questions.

B. It is a high-tech device that revolutionizes teaching.

C. It is a course designed for students to learn online.

D. It is a computer program that aids student learning.

根据原文第一段“In order to help cope with the vast number of student qu estions in the online class, Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence.”

13. What does the underlined word “remedy” in t he paragraph 2 mean?

A. Boycott.

B. Improve.

C. Evaluate.

D. Corrupt.

Many students drop out of online courses because of the lack of teaching support. When students feel isolated or confused and reach out with questions

that go unanswered, their motivation to continue begins to fade.”

do something to remedy this situation),可猜测remedy有扭转、改变、改善之类的含义,A. Boycott

D. Corrupt

14. What do we learn about Jill Watson?

A. She was unwelcome to students at first.

B. She got along pretty well with students.

C. She turned out to be a great success.

D. She was released online as an experiment.

Jill Watson是虚拟教学助理的名字,根据原文倒数第二段“Jill was able to answer the students’ questions correctly 97% of the time. The virtual assistant became so advanced and realistic

that the students didn’t know she was a computer. The students, who were studying artificial

intelligence, were interacting with the virtual assistant and couldn’t tell it from a real human being.

Goel didn’t inform them about Jill’s true identity until April 26. The students were actually very

pos itive about the experience.”

15. What does Professor Goel plan to do next with Jill Watson?

A. Assign her to answer more of students’ questions.

B. Upgrade her intelligence to the level of top scientists.

C. Launch different versions of her online.

D. Encourage students to interact with her more freely.

8

【答案】A

根据原文最后一段“The goal of Professor Goel’s virtual assistant next year is to take over answering 40% of all the questions posed by students on the online forum.”

Every student prefers to get high scores in their exams. But how can you effectively improve your memory and perform well in your exam? Try the following methods.

●Try the Memory Palace.

For example, if you want to memorize some English words, you might store “furniture, television.” in your living room and “fridge, cooker...” in the kitchen. 1. Through this way, you can memorize these words easily.

●Create your own songs.

This method has been proven in several studies as a way of sending information to memory. You can use your favorite songs to recreate new songs with information you need to remember. 2.

●Take some deep breaths.

3. If you are stressed you will have a more difficult time recalling information during an exam. You should put some energy into de-stressing but “turning of” stress is easier said than done. That’s why scientists recommend practice tests to you. Practice tests are not only a scientifically supported means of improving memory recall but they stand up to stressful situations.

● 4.

If you are feeling distracted, do some exercise. Studies show that those who have exercised for 15 minutes and then complete a memory task, complete tasks faster than those who haven’t exercised. Even a simple walk can make a difference.

There are so many suggested methods for you. 5. If you know that studying alone works best for you, go to self-study room often when you finish your classes at school.

Dear Mr. Smith,

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Mr. Smith,

I’m Li Hua, a student from Class 1, Grade 3. I’m glad to hear you will come to teach us. I will give a brief introduction of our class to you.

There are 60 students in our class, including 36 boys and 24 girls. Most of us are fond of studying English, but the abilities of listening and speaking are relatively weak, especially when communicating with foreigners. Although the academic atmosphere is great, we always can’t get good grades.

We hope you will give us more opportunities to express ourselves in English and enjoy more English videos in class. In addition, if a variety of English activities, such as English short plays and English speech contests, can be held regularly, our English will improve greatly.

We are looking forward to your coming!

Yours, Li Hua

Most students experience a lot of stress while preparing for exams, as both their parents and teachers expect them to get high scores. Students who feel anxious are likely to experience problems like difficulty in concentrating while studying, confusion, feeling stressed while looking at difficult questions, feeling blank, sweating, sleepless, etc. Under such circumstances they end up scoring less than they could have. Therefore, it’s extremely important for

18

students to learn about how to overcome fear, so that they can take their examination confidently, finally earning good grades. Here are a few tips on ways to overcome exam fear.

There are many students who take studies lightly, leaving everything to be studied at the last minute. As a result, when exams are around the corner, they feel scared, as they don’t know where to start, and what to study. So the easiest way of overcoming this problem is to start studying much before the exam. Another common mistake that many students make is that they don’t make an effort to understand the subject. When they have memorized without understanding, the chances of forgetting are more. Therefore, it is vital to understand the concept before memorizing it. In this way, you will never forget any important point. Besides, that the exams are coming does not mean that you have to sit with your books for the entire day, and students should take regular breaks to relax and refresh their mind. However, they should avoid watching too much TV and addicting themselves to the Internet, in which way, they are more likely to waste time.

Apart from the tips above, here are some points that will help students cope with exam-related anxiety. For example, before the exam, avoid studying anything new or having conversations with your classmates about what they have studied and how much they have studied, both of which will make you more nervous. During the exam, if you get blank after seeing difficult questions, ignore them for the time being, and attempt those you find easier. Once you have completed them, go back to the difficult ones.

Most students experience stress during examinations as a result of high expectations from parents and teachers. Here are some tips to deal with exam fear to guarantee better grades. First, make good preparations ahead of time. Second, understanding what you are memorizing will help. Third, strike a balance between study and relaxation. Besides, skip the difficult questions during an exam. Anyway, avoid anything that will increase your anxiety before and during the exam.

An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. There was no one else. In wind and rain, she started on her difficult was. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream. At last -she never knew how long it had taken her – she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately, the station-master was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early. 21. What did Kate decide to do? A. Stop the express train. B. Check the signal light. C. Meet the passengers. D. Visit the station-master. 22. Which of the following words best describes Kate’s journey? A. Fruitless. B. Boring. C. Well-planned. D. Ricky. 23. Why did the station-master turn pale? A. He suddenly fell ill. B. He realized the danger. C. He discovered his mistake. D. He became over-excited. B The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is offering a free meal to man guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bile linked to a generator(发电机). The idea is to get people fit and reduce their carbon footprint. Guest will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity – roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meal tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. The bicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel. The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guest staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokeswoman, said, “Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but generally I don’t think people will take advantage of our programme.” Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition an 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website https://www.360docs.net/doc/5b13540278.html, recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as symbol of the hotel’s green profile(形象).” If successful, the electric bicycle meal programme will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement. 24. What is the main purpose of the free meal programme? A. To promote the hotel’s green concept. B. To make the city known to the world. C. To attract people to the hotel restaurant. D. To get guests to stay longer at the hotel. 25. How can a participant get a free meal? A. By becoming a professional cyclist. B. By cycling to produce some electricity.

The International Children's Day (ICD) is celebrated in numerous countries, usually (but not always) on June 1 each year. Origin Origin :The ICD had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeingof Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. It is not clear as towhy June 1 was chosen as the ICD:one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate theDragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.June 1 has since been observed as the ICD by numerous countries, especially by Communist countries; in the Western world the ICD is usually celebrated on other days of the year (if at all), and there is often little public awareness about these celebrations. Consequently there is sometimes amisperception that June 1 as the ICD was a Communist invention. Noheless, in recent years even some groups within the United States started observing the ICD on June. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same tome. In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong. In Chicago, the mayor(市长)appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character. The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point ,putting all their energy And passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself. Ultinatel was Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process. or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word. ( ) 1. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy? A. To invite authors to guide readers.
