Lesson 26 The best art critics

First listen and then answer the question.

Who is the student's best critic?

I am an art student and I paint a lot of pictures. Many people pretend that they understand modern art. They always tell you what a picture is ‘about’. Of course, many

pictures are not ‘about’ anything. They are just pretty patterns. We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else. They notice more. My sister is only seven, but she always tells me whether my pictures are good or not. She came into my room yesterday. ‘What are you doing?’ she asked. ‘I'm hanging this picture on the wall, ’ I answered. ‘It's a new one. Do you like it?’She looked at it critically for a moment.

‘It's all right, ’ she said, ‘but isn't it upside down?’ I looked at it again. She was right! It was!

Notes on the text

1 art student,

2 They always tell you what a picture is‘about’.

3 It's a new one.

A car called bluebird Lesson 72 A car called Bluebird“蓝鸟”汽车 First listen and then answer the question. What mistake was made? The great racing driver, Sir Malcolm Campbell, was the first man to drive at over 300 miles per hour. He set up a new world record in September 1935 at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. Bluebird, the car he was driving, had been specially built for him. It was over 30 feet in length and had a 2,500-horsepower engine. Although Campbell reached a speed of over 304 miles per hour, he had great difficulty in controlling the car because a tyre burst during the first run. After his attempt, Campbell was disappointed to learn that his average speed had been 299 miles per hour. However, a few days later, he was told that a mistake had been made. His average speed had been 301 miles per hour. Since that time, racing drivers have reached speeds over 600 miles an hour. Following in his father's footsteps many years later, Sir Malcolm's son, Donald, also set up a world record. Like his father, he was driving a car called Bluebird.

3.We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. in the same way that/as是个连接短语,用于表示比较,可译 为“像/和…… She walks in the same way that/as her sister did. 4.I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else. Can you find anyone else? I can find nothing else here except an old dictionary. 5.…she always tells me whether my pictures are good or not. …… 连接词whether…or not能够表示选择: I don't know whether you are interested (in it) or not.

The record-holder

The record-holder Lesson 73 The record-holder纪录保持者First listen and then answer the question. Did the boy go where he wanted to? Children who play truant from school are unimaginative. A quiet day's fishing, or eight hours in a cinema seeing the same film over and over again, is usually as far as they get. They have all been put to shame by a boy who, while playing truant, travelled 1,600 miles. He hitchhiked to Dover and, towards evening, went into a boat to find somewhere to sleep. When he woke up next morning, he discovered that the boat had, in the meantime, travelled to Calais. No one noticed the boy as he crept off. From there, he hitchhiked to Paris in a lorry. The driver gave him a few biscuits and a cup of coffee and left him just outside the city. The next car the boy stopped did not take him into the centre of Paris as he hoped it would, but to Perpignan on the French-Spanish border. There he was picked up by a policeman and sent back to England by the local authorities. He has surely set up a record for the thousands of children who dream of evading school.

First listen and then answer the question. Why did the prisoner attack the driver? When he had killed the guard, the prisoner of war quickly dragged him into the bushes. Working rapidly in the darkness, he soon changed into the dead man's clothes. Now, dressed in a blue uniform and with a rifle over his shoulder, the prisoner marched boldly up and down in front of the camp. He could hear shouting in the camp itself. Lights were blazing and men were running here and there: they had just discovered that a prisoner had escaped. At that moment, a large black car with four officers inside it, stopped at the camp gates. The officers got out and the prisoner stood to attention and saluted as they passed. When they had gone, the driver of the car came towards him. The man obviously wanted to talk. He was rather elderly with grey hair and clear blue eyes. The prisoner felt sorry for him, but there was nothing else he could do. As the man came near, the prisoner knocked him to the ground with a sharp blow. Then, jumping into the car, he drove off as quickly as he could.

They cried out to Moses, their leader, for the foods they loved: leeks (韭菜), onions, and garlic. The Romans, like the Israelites, loved to eat garlic. And they hung bags of garlic around their necks. _____(46) They also thought it would keep them from getting sick. A similar idea is still held. Many people take garlic thinking it will prevent or cure disease. Most doctors say it does no such thing. _____(47) Its smell may force people to stay far apart. At least then they can't pass germs on to each other. _____(48) What if you're in a play, for instance? Actors have been known to forget their lines because they couldn't stand the garlic smell on a fellow actor's breath. Some have even made up new lines and actions that kept them far away from the one who had eaten garlic. Through the years man has tried to cope with the smell of garlic. _____(49) We now know why. It's been found that the oils of the garlic do not stick to the teeth, Garlic tongue, or gums (齿龈). They go into the lungs instead. From there they are breathed out. They pass out through the skin too. Strange as it seems, food may have a great deal of garlic in it without smelling or tasting strong. It all depends on how it is cooked. French cooks make a good soup with whole cloves (瓣) of garlic. They use more than thirty cloves in one bowl of soup. But they take care not to crush them. And they cook them whole. _____(50) And as the cloves cook they change in some strange way. The soup turns out to be delicious. It's not strong at all. A But no medicine, mouthwash, chewing gum, or toothpaste seems to help much B As a result, the strong oils stay in the cloves. C They say it may help in one way, though. D Many people eat garlic. E But keeping your distance can be hard at times.

The boys put up their tent in the middle of a field and cooked a meal. After their meal they told stories and sang songs, but it began to rain, so they crept into their tent. The boys woke up in the middle of the night. The tent was full of water, so they rushed outside. A stream had formed in the field and flowed right under their tent. (69 words) 作文 I am very tall so I must be careful. Doorways are often low and I usually knock my head against them. My head always hurts. I have never met a tall architect. Have you? 书信写作 21 Brook St., Woodside, California, U. S. A. 21st Feb, 19 ____ 难点 1 Mrs. Bowers told her children to put their toys away and go to bed. 2 You can stay here tonight. We can put you up in the spare room. 3 I'm not ready yet. I haven't put my shoes on. 4 ‘Open your exercise books and put down the following,’ the teacher said. 5 Father is putting out the fire he lit in the garden. 6 When they have put up that new building, it will spoil the view. 7 I have put off my trip to Japan until next month. 8 I am getting a divorce. I can't put up with him any longer. But some time later it began to rain. The boys felt tired so they put out the fire and crept into their tent… 只有(d)it had begun to rain and they felt tired才是孩子们去睡觉的原因。(a)it was late是事实,但不是他们睡觉的直接原因;(b)they had sung songs不符合逻辑;(c)it began to rain 只是一方面原因,但不够完整。 2. The stream wound its way across the field and then flowed right under the tent! 只有(c)had camped in the path of a stream(在一条小溪穿过的地方露营)与课文实际情况相符,其它三个选择(a)had a good night's sleep(睡了一晚上好觉)、(b)stayed in their tent all night(整晚呆在他们的帐篷里)、(d)had camped beside a stream(在一条小溪旁露营)都与事实不符。 3. 选(d)。 (a)it put up和(b)their tent put up语序错误,宾语应该放在谓语动词的后面;(c)put up it也不正确,当宾语是代词时应该放在动词和副词之间;只有(d)put their tent up语序正确,宾语tent是名词,既可以放动词和副词之间,也可以放副词之后,所以要选(d)。 4. 5. 选(d)。 (a)they had hunger不符合英语习惯;(b)they had hungry语法错误,hungry是形容词,它前面应该是连系动词be,而不是had;(c)they were hunger也不符合语法,连系动词were后面应跟形容词,不能跟名词hunger;只有(d)they felt hungry是正确的,动词fell后面既可以跟形容词hungry,也可以跟名词hunger。 6. 旁)才能同前一句中的by the campfire(在篝火旁)意思相同;(a)close 是形容词,后面要加上介词to;(c)besides是介词,但表示“除…… 7. 选(a)。 8. 选(d)。 (a)sing songs(唱歌)、(b)tell stories(讲故事)、(c)play(玩)这三个选择都不能同前面的They cooked a meal构成因果关系,因此不符合逻辑;只有(d)eat(吃)才是They cooked a meal的原因,所以是正确答案。 9. The boys had put out the campfire (a)switched on (打开电源开关)不符合题义:(b)on fire(着火)意思不通;(c)on(打开的)指电源而不是指火,be动词和on连在一起还有“上演”的意思;三者都不对。 10. 选(c)。 只有选(c)were very quiet(很安静)才与前面的They crept into their tent(他们钻进帐篷)的意思相符,因为creep有“蹑手蹑脚”的含义。而(a)made a lot of noise(制造很多噪音)、(b)ran quidkly(快 跑)、(d)were very noisy(非常吵闹)这三个选择都不符合creep的含义。 11. (a)a comfort是名词、(b)in comfort是介词短语、(d)comfortably是副词,词性都不对。 12. 选(c)。 只有(c)deeply(深深地)修饰sleep才与前一句的soundly(香甜地)意思相近;而(a)noisily(吵闹地)、(b)fast(快)都不符合题义;(d)good(好的)是形容词,不能修饰动词sleep。 1
