The brown bear

My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our c hildren, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.

Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usu ally rush forwards to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back—the sign(迹象) of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear b ehaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.

I held my camera tripod(三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.

Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.

The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.

Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five or six times.

The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling(扭打) with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back towards the forest, before returning for another attack—the first time I felt panic.

Apparently sa tisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the oute for us could hardly have been better. I'm proud that my family re mained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different oute.

C. protect the children

D. set up a barrier for itself

25. The bear finally went away after it ________.

Last summer, two nineteenth-century cottages were rescued from remote farm fields in Montana,to be moved to an Art Deco building in San Francisco. The houses were made of wood. These cottages once housed early settlers as they worked the dry Montana soil;now they hold Twitter engineers.

The cottages could be an example of the industry's odd love affair with “low technology”, a concept associated with the natural world, and with old-school craftsmanship(手艺) that exists long before the Internet era.Low technology is not virtual(虚拟的)—so,to take advantage of it,Internet panies have had to get creative. The rescued wood cottages, fitted by hand in the late eighteen-hundreds,are an obvious example, but Twitter's designs lie on the extreme end.Other panies are using a broader interpretation(阐释) of low technology that focuses on nature.

Amazon is building three glas s-spheres filled with trees,so that employees can “work and socialize in a more natural,park-like setting”.At Google's office,an entire floor is carpeted in grace.Facebook's second Menlo Park camping will have a rooftop park with a walking trail.

Olle Lundberg, the founder of Lundberg Design, has worked with many tech panies over

the years.“We have lost the connection to the maker in our lives, and our tech engineers are the ones who feel most impoverished(贫乏的),because they're surrounded by the digital world,”he says.“They're looking for a way to regain their individual identity, and we've found that introducing real crafts is one way to do that.”

This craft-based theory is rooted in history.William Morris, the English artist and writer, turned back to pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties,just after the Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts movement defined itself against machines.“Without creative human occupation, people became disconnected from life,” Morris said.

Research has shown that natural environments can restore(恢复) our mental capacities. In Japan, patients are encouraged to “forest-bathe”, taking walks through woods to lower their blood pressure.

These health benefits apply to the workplace as well.Rachel Kaplan,a professor of environmental psychology, has spent years researching the restorative effects of natural environments. Her research found that workers with access to nature at the office—even simple views of trees and flowers—felt their jobs were less stressful and more satisfying. If low-tech offices can potentially nourish the brains and improve the mental health of employees then, fine, bring on the cottages.

32.The writer ment ions the two nineteenth-century cottages to show that_.

A.Twitter is having a hard time

B.old cottages are in need of protection

C.early settlers once suffered from a dry climate in Montana

D.Internet panies have rediscovered the benefits of low technology

33.Low technology i s regarded as something that ________.

A.is related to nature

B.is out of date today

C.consumes too much energy

D.exists in the virtual world

34.The main idea of Paragraph 5 is that human beings ________.

A.have destroyed many pre-industrial arts

B.have a tradition of valuing arts and crafts

C.can bee intelligent by learning history

D.can regain their individual identity by using machines

35.What might be the best title for the passage?

A.Past glories, future dreams

B.The virtual world,the real challenge

C.High-tech panies, low-tec h offices

D.The more craftsmanship,the less creativity

Everything that is alive needs energy. All animals get the energy they need from food.

People are animals. Think about the human body as an 61 (amaze) machine. It can do all kinds of things for us. Food is the fuel 62 helps keep the machine 63 (run).

Plants use sunlight to make their own food. Animals are not able to do that. Some animals eat plants. Some animals eat other animals as meat. Some animals, like people, eat both plants 64 animals.

In our life, we will be nice to another people, while when facing our parents, we are patient and even argue with them. People always think their parents don’t understand them and refuse to talking to them. They show the worst temper to the ones who love them, and they show their kindest face to stranger. It is a sad thing, and the reason which people show their badness to the dearest is that people just get used for the presentation of their relatives. They are know in their hearts that their parents won’t leave them, no matter which they do. People neglected the fact that our parents are the dearest persons in the

world, so we should be nice to our parents.

A Walking down a path through some woods in Georgia, I saw a small pool of water ahead on the path. I changed my direction to go around it on the part of the path that wasn’t covered by water or mud. As I reached the pool, I was suddenly attacked! Yet I did nothing for the attack. It was so unpredictable and from somewhere totally unexpected. I was surprised as well as unhurt though I had been struck four or five times. I backed up a foot and my attacker stopped attacking me. Had I been hurt, I wouldn’t have found it amusing. And I was laughing. After all, I was being attacked by a butterfly! Having stopped, laughing, I took a step forward. My attacker rushed me again. He charged towards me at full speed, attempting to hurt me but in vain. For a second time, I took a step backwards while my att acker paused. I wasn’t sure what to do. After all, it’s just not eve ry day that one is attacked by a butterfly. I stepped back to look the situation over. My attacker moved back to land on the ground. That’s when I discovered why my attacker was charging at me only moments earlier. He had a mate and she was dying. Sitting close beside her, he opened and closed his wings as if to fan her. I could only admire the love and courage of that butterfly in his concern for his mate. He had taken it up on himself to attack me for his mate’s sake, even though she was clearly dying and I was so large. He did so just to give her those extra few precious moments of life. His courage in attacking something thousands of times larger and heavier than himself just for his ma te’s safety seemed admirable. I couldn’t do anything other than reward him by walking on the more difficult side of the pool. He had truly earned those moments to be with her, undisturbed. Since then, I’ve always tried to remember the courage of that butt erfly whenever I see huge barriers facing me. 21. Why did the writer change his direction while walking down a path? A. To get close to a butterfly. B. To look the bad situation over. C. To escape a sudden attack. D. To avoid getting his shoes dirty. 22. What did the man find funny? A. Making the attacker pause. B. Being attacked by a butterfly. C. Stepping on a butterfly. D. Discovering the energetic butterfly.
