Perhaps the most interesting person I have ever met in my life is an Italian professor of philosophy who teaches at the University of Pisa. 21 I last met this man eight years ago, I have not forgotten his 22 qualities. First of all, I respected his 23 to teaching. Because his lectures were always well-prepared and clearly delivered, students crowded into his classroom. His followers liked the fact that he 24 what he taught. Furthermore, he could be counted on to explain his ideas in an 25 way, introducing such aids to 26 as oil paintings, music, and guest lecturers. T here’s an event that changed my life many years ago. It is a memory that 81 comes and goes, but it is one of the most82 memories that my wife and I83 Once we were driving home and decided to 84 at a local gas station to get coffee and something to eat. When we got back into our car, we noticed a man 85 outside in front of the building. You could tell that he was a86 man. His clothes were87 He must have not had enough money to get something to eat.88 what he did moved all of us.

The next thing I remember is a dog that89 the front of the building. I could tell she was a she, because you could tell that she had been90 puppies(小狗). She was terribly in need of something to eat and I felt so91 for her. I knew if she didn’t eat soon, she and her puppies would not92 it.

My wife and I sat there and looked at her. We93 that people walked by and didn’t even have a look at her. She might not have been as pretty and94 as most, but she still deserved better. Before my wife and I did anything,95 did. The homeless man, who I thought was hungry himself, went into the store. And what he did brought96 to me and my wife. He has gone into the store and with perhaps all the97 he may have had, bought a can of dog food and fed that dog.

Now, a couple of 169 in, I can listen to the news in French and catch 90 percent of it on the first try, read a novel if the language is not too difficult, and hold up my end of a 170 if it doesn’t go too fast. Food has always been one of the greatest wants of humankind. The search for food is the 176 human behavior. Thus, 177 food were easier to get and prepare, it would be really 178 for humankind. It would reduce a great burden(负担). The development of processed foods(加工食品) has made food easier to get and prepare.179 every coin has two sides. Apart from its advantages, the 180 of cooking also has its disadvantages.

Though processed foods seem a great way to save 181 , they offer much less nutritional(营养的)value than traditional foods. People today are so 182 that they are not able to spend enough time preparing their food. As a result, many people 183 to eat processed foods, ready-to-cook meals and various fast foods. But what will 184 if one eats such food all year round? It will damage your 185 . The nutritional value of the food is not so high. Worse still, research shows that preservatives(防腐剂)used in these foods are 186 to children. That’s why health experts warn people not to eat too much of such 187 food.

Besides, since people spend little time188 food, the culture of cooking is slowly

189 . Cooking is not done just to satisfy hunger; it is also a(n)190 form of art. Across the world, there are thousands of 191 cooking styles. If young people are used to processed foods, few of them will develop great cooking 192 . And when they become parents, it will be hard for their children to enjoy a(n) 193 h ome-cooked meal. What’s more, cooking is a great time for 194 to connect. There is a lot of 195 when family members are preparing food together.

In a word, I believe though processed food has made the preparation of food much easier, it has not been a good step for humankind.

2019人教版高中英语必修3电子课本 word版

普通高中课程标准实验教科书《英语》电子课本 Book 3 Unit 1 Festivals around the world B3U1P1-3 FESTIV ALS AND CELEBRATIONS Ancient Festivals Festivals and celebrations of all kinds are held everywhere. The most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of the cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Other celebrations were held when hunters could catch animals. They would starve if food was difficult to find, so they celebrated when they had food. They lit fires and made music because they thought these festivals would bring a year of plenty. Festivals of the Dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead, or satisfy and please the ancestors, who could return either to help or to do harm. In Japan the festival is called Obon, when people should go to clean the graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They light lamps and play music because they think that this will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico they have the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people might eat food in shape of skulls, and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The festival of Halloween had its origin as an event in memory of the dead. It is now a children’s festival, when they can go to their neighbours’ homes and ask for sweets. They dress up and try to frighten people. If they are not given anything, the children might play a trick. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can be held as an honour to famous people or to the gods. One of these is the Dragon Boat Festival in China, which honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Yuan. Another is Columbus Day in the USA, in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. In India there is a national festival on October 2 to honour Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter ,and because a season of agricultural work is over. In European countries it is the custom to decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and people get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their animals, flowers, fruits and vegetables, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. In China and Japan there are mid-autumn festivals, when people admire the moon and give gift of mooncakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat, and may give children lucky money in the red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the lunar New Year together. In some Western countries there are very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. They might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of all kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival in Christian countries. It celebrates the return of Jesus for Christians and it also celebrates the coming of spring. In Japan, the Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country is covered with cherry tree flowers so that it looks as though it might be covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each others. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our daily life for a little while.
