Over the last 30 years, Bangkok, once a small fishing village, has transformed into a rich, concrete, high-rise city that it is today. The spreading metropolis and its population of 12 million now produces 35 per cent of Thailand's economic wealth.

As a magnet for foreign companies, Bangkok attracts many overseas managers and business people from different fields, including tourism, automobiles and electronics. The city's population of foreigners is in the high hundreds of thousands, with tens of thousands of Japanese, Chinese and western employees working alongside hundreds of thousands of Burmese who mostly do unskilled jobs shunned by Thais.

For those used to the good life, the variety and quality of the city's food is a key attraction, says one US manager, before listing many of his favorite Italian, Mexican and, of course, Thai restaurants. Most offer quality meals for less than the cost of a take away sandwich in London.

Great choice and value can be found in Bangkok's other attractions, too. For overseas business people who enjoy shopping in luxury and air-conditioned comfort! The city has hundreds of modern shopping malls. Some foreigners, however, prefer the charms of Chanukah Market, where anything can be bought at a good price by the skilled bargainer.

When the time comes to talk business many overseas business people prefer to move out of the markets and onto the golf course. Thailand has thousands of courses, which can provide a welcome break from the busy and noisy city life. But most businesspeople go to the golf course because it’s the perfect place to discuss the next big deal.

Because of the fast-paced life some foreign business people see Bangkok as a place to stay for the short term rather than a lifetime. Australian computer software designer Sarah Huang is seven months pregnant but still working full-time in her Bangkok office. She says “the city is definitely a place I want to stay for the next five, ten years”. Nannies and home help are affordable, but high fees for quality secondary education have convinced Ms. Huang to return to Australia when her child reaches high school age.

1. According to the first two paragraphs, we know that ___________.

D. It gives them the opportunity to meet local people in a social setting.

4. Sarah Huang says she’ll eventually leave Bangkok because __________.

A. she is going to have a baby

B. her working hours are too long

C. it's not easy to find suitable home help there

D. the cost of a good education there is too high

5. The main purpose of the passage is to________.

A. explain the reasons for Bangkok's rapid economic growth over the past 30 years

(1)

At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but 1 I drove up to the light, it turned red, and I braked to a halt. I look left, right, and behind me. Nothing. 2 a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat,

3 (wait) the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.

I started wondering 4 I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of 5 (catch) by the police, because there was obviously no cop anywhere around and 6 certainly would have been no danger in going 7 it. Much later that night, the 8 question of why I’d stopped for that light came 9 to me. I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract (合同) we all have with each other. It’s not only the law, but it’s an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor 10 : we don’t go through red lights. Like most of us, I’m more ready to be stopped from doing something bad by the social agreement that disapproves of it than by any law against it.

(2)

1 is possible that we simply do not stay in one place for a true friendship to develop. However, there can be no disagreement on the need for each of us

For some people, many friendships on the surface are quite enough—and that’s all right .But at some point we need to make sure that our expectations are the same as our 6 (friend) expectations. If one wants more from the friendship than the other, 7 if this is not talked about, one is likely at last to fell that he’s holding the short end of the stick. The sharing of personal experience 8 (include) our tears as well as our dark dreams 9 (be) the surest way to deepen friendships. But it must be undertaken slowly and carried on only if there signs of interest and action 10 return.

Since I didn’t coach that afternoon可知,因为那个下午没有教练任务,因此有多余的时间陪孩子们。

3. B。空后的the music would play是hitting the toys的目的,因此用so that。in case以防;so long as只要;if only但愿。

4. A。 After he was on his tummy for a little while可知,Jace在翻滚。

5. C。 I would go and turn him over我们可以推断,在Jace趴在床上待一段时间后,他就感觉厌烦了,此时“我”走过去把Jace翻转过来。

7. C。联系下文and it was as though he just couldn’t get 8 (enough)可知,他喜欢这样做。

I will hold the 10 (memory) of that last bath forever in my heart.

11. B。联系空后的for him to lie on可知,“我”在浴缸里面铺上了毛巾。

After supper it was bath time可知,给他洗澡是每天晚饭后做的事情,因此在做完这些后,“我”会在平时的时间把他抱到床上,让他睡觉。

16. B。 argue with与……争论;communicate with与……交流;read with与……

17. C。下文有I remember being glad that he was wet,由此我们可以得到提示。

I remember being glad that he was wet

1. A。 As a magnet for foreign companies, Bangkok attracts many overseas managers and business people from different fields, including tourism! automobiles and electronics可知Bangkok为人们提供了许多工作机会。故选A。

2. B。A.forgotten忘记的;B.unwanted不需要的;C.appreciated欣赏,感激;D.rewarded 奖赏。

But most business people go to the golf course because it's the perfect place to discuss the next big deal可知高尔夫球场成了人们谈生意的地方。故选B。

4. D。 Nannies and home help are affordable, but high fees for quality secondary education have convinced Ms.Huang to return to Australia when her child reaches high school age.

Great choice and value can b e found in Bangkok’s other attractions, too可知该文主要描述了Bangkok’s对外国商人的吸引力。

1. times改为time,some time意为“某时”。

4.第二个there 改为where,where在此引导定语从句。

5.去掉where,in other places在此为地点状语。

7. whether改为if,表示“如果”时,不能用whether。

10. stood改为stand,因为to stand up在此为不定式结构。

11. climbed改为climb/ climbing,若将as well as视为连词,则将climbed改为climb,因为它与其前的do并列;若将as well as视为介词,则climbing,因为介词后动词用动名词。

12. 去掉live前的to,因为live与其前的know, have并列。

13. person’s 前加a,这里的a表泛指。

Dear Wang Ping,

I’m very happy to go with you to Li Ming’s 18th birthday party, but I have something unclear to ask. Please tell me when it begins and when it ends. Where is it to be held? How shall we go to the party, by bus or by bike? Would you let me know who else will be at the party? A birthday gift has been a tradition for a happy birthday. What do you have in mind if we want to get him a nice gift? Also, I’d like to know how he plans the party. Any dance, singing, games or anything else? Anyway, all that counts is to have fun at the party.

Looking forward to your early reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

用了两个问句“Where is it to be held? How shall we go to the party, by bus or by bike??” Would you l et me know who else will be at the party? I’d like to know how he plans the party和定语从句all that counts is to have fun at the party.
