Shortly after the war，my brother and I were invited to spend a few days with an uncle who had just returned from abroad. He had rented a cottage in the country，although he rarely spent much time there. I was glad that I had stayed up late to listen to my uncle's stories，otherwise I should certainly have been seriously injured，perhaps killed.

That night we all slept on the floor in the sitting room downstairs，not wishing to risk our lives by sleeping under a roof which might at any moment fall down on our heads. We left for London the very next morning and my uncle gave up his cottage in the country. This was not the kind of adventure he cared for either!

We all have one shirt in the closet that we don't want to get rid of，yet keep around because we can't bear to just throw it in the garbage. We don't wear it anymore. Being a little out of style，your old T-shirt needs a new home where it can be appreciated. One city in Toronto has started a project to give it one.

Earlier this year，the Toronto suburb(郊区) of Markham introduced a new program encouraging its residents and residents of nearby suburbs to donate their old unwanted clothing. The program is exceptional because unlike most of those second-hand stores，they are accepting old clothing that isn't quite in perfect condition. It is breathing new life into these typically-trashed items. Contrary to common belief, textiles(纺织品) are not only used for clothing，and these items are being repurposed in a variety of interesting ways.

The city has set up many different donation centers around the suburbs，and residents are encouraged，to donate any unwanted textiles they happen to have lying around their house. It's volunteers' duty to divide the donations into different sorts. Those items in usable and good condition are donated to local homeless shelters and other aid centers. Those which are not are shipped off to be used for industrial purposes. Only when there is no more industrial need for fabric and textiles will they begin to use their last place—a landfill outside the city.

The program isn't the city's only green initiative(倡议)．It has already had one of Canada and the world's largest solar panels，and it is said that they are steadily working towards a shift to 100% renewable

energy. The city also has subsidized(补助) farmers' markets and over 125 miles of bike paths. As a result，Markham also has a much lower rate of obesity than other Canadian cities. Now，it's working towards another goal—100% recycling of unwanted textiles.

The fact that ants are fascinating insects has been known for some time. Now, scientists have discovered a large number of wood ants living in an abandoned underground storehouse in Templewo, Poland，despite having no obvious source of food.

Polish zoologist Wojciech Czechowski and his team began studying the underground colony in 2013.They found the ants built a 60 cm high nest in the soil directly over the storehouse's vertical air pipe. As years passed，the metal covering on the pipe eroded，leaving behind a hole that thousands of worker ants accidentally slip into each day as they go about their daily chores. The scientists say that there are no sources of food in the storehouse. This means that the insects live in a state of near starvation.

In July 2015，the researchers disturbed part of the ant nest in search of larvae(幼虫)，empty cocoons(茧)，and queens. They found nothing，leading them to suspect that the lack of food and cold temperatures made reproduction impossible and that the group tending the nest is entirely made up of non-reproductive female workers. Their population is refilled every year，by a new rain of unfortunate ants that slide down the hole. The researchers say that when they returned in January 2016，the nest had been repaired. It appears that despite the terrible conditions，the worker ants do not stop constructing their nest.

Wood ants are known for their ability to adapt to bad living conditions. In this case，the millions of worker ants trapped in the storehouse have no choice. But instead of losing hope，they are making the best of the situation—a classic example of “when life gives you lemons，make lemonade”．
