For my sweet sixteen there were no TV cameras filming the planning process, and no beautiful car as a “surprise” gift at the end of the party. But it was a party with a far better ending. My friends and family came together to dance the night away and remember World AIDS Day to help the Holly House Orphanage (孤儿院) in Nairobi, Kenya. The $8,600 we raised was the best gift I could ever dream of! It was so pleasing to know that my celebration would be felt halfway around the world by children in need.

I am part of the Global Citizen Corps Leadership Program, which has taught me to become aware of the problems of those around the world. To me, it seems that a lack of education is the obstacle (障碍) that keeps many in the cycle of poverty (贫穷). The school in Nairobi is a place where I believe my efforts, although small, can have a huge effect.

When I started planning for my sweet sixteen, I faced many difficulties. But later I realized that World AIDS Day was on a Saturday, so I decided to use that evening in combination with the donation (捐献) theme so that the date meant something. My actual birthday was not until February, but I moved the party to World AIDS Day in December. Everyone I told was inspired. As a matter of fact, after my party I received an invitation from a friend who also asked for donations for another African AIDS organization instead of gifts. This makes me feel like I can encourage my friends to make a difference in the world.

I did not tell the school what I had cooked up for my birthday. I wanted it to be a surprise. So I put all of the checks in one envelope with a Christmas card. Then I waited with excitement for a response. The school could not have been more pleased with their gift. This birthday party has been the best ever. Isn’t that what a sweet sixteen should be?

21. How did the author celebrate her sixteenth birth-day?

A. By raising $8,600 for African children.

B. By recording the party with a TV camera.

C. By receiving a “surprise” gift of a beautiful car.

D. By drinking with her friends and family.

A. organize their birthday celebration

B. stay away from the influence of AIDS

C. improve their level of education

D. care about the problems of the world

23. The underlined part in the last paragraph probably means ______.

A. the food she and her friends ate at the party

B. the gifts her friends prepared for her

C. what she did for the school

D. what she brought to her birthday party

24. The author celebrated her birthday on World AIDS Day to ______.

A. celebrate her birthday ahead of time

B. make her birthday meaningful

C. tell children something about AIDS

D. expect more cash from her friends

I think machine power is better than human power because we cannot survive

without our daily used machines like bikes, coolers, computers, etc.

Started on 14-Apr-2008 By Smith

E-mail: rksscet12@https://www.360docs.net/doc/6b7823449.html,

Johnson 6-May-2008

Yes, it’s very clear that machine power is better than man power. But machine power has its limitations (局限). It cannot survive without electricity and manhandling. If it doesn’t have these two then it is completely useless. So man should not completely depend on machines. One more point is that because of the use of machines man has become lazy. This laziness has brought in many problems like obesity, arthritis (关节炎) and other health problems. But I am not saying that man should completely turn from ma-chine power to man power. He should have a balance of both. Even I can’t think of life without a car, a

computer and a cooler.

Sally

9-May-2008 Humans only created the machines. So, human power is greater than machine power. To do the things quickly we created the machines. But machines cannot think. That thinking power

beats machine power.

Tina

17-May-2008

But without humans there is no value of any machine. If someone wants to use his machine perfectly then one must have

expert labor or man power.

Tommy 19-May-2008

Hi to all, my opinion is that human power is more powerful than machine power, because human beings created the machines. Human brain works more com-pared to machines.

Mike

20-May-2008 I think human power is better than ma-chine power because even if we travel on foot to near places the money will not be wasted and we can get exercise.

Skateboarding has become one of several non--traditional activities that PE teachers around America are introducing to inspire kids to exercise regularly. Some PE classes feature in-line (滚轮) skating, yoga, and even rock climbing. Experts have call ed those types of activities “the new PE”.

Such activities are part of a larger effort to help kids develop lifelong fitness habits and to keep them from becoming overweight. Now, 9 million U.S. children and teens are overweight. Obesity (肥胖) can lead to health problems such as diabetes and heart disease later in life.

“Our children and youth are becoming unhealthy and obese,” says Lindsey Johnson. “Skateboarding is a great activity that keeps kids d oing physical movement and gives them new skills and interest.”

Some schools don’t allow skateboarding because they say it is dangerous. Cendali, however, argues that regular practice eliminates a great deal of the danger. “We teach students how to do it and how to do it safely,” he says.

Some people say skateboarding teaches life lessons. “Skateboarding teaches kids to believe that if they stick with something they will finally succeed,” says education expert Richard Sagor of Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

Skateboarding inspires kids not to give up in learning difficult skills. “It’s natural for kids to want to learn and get better at things,” adds Sagor. “When it comes to skateboarding, they’ll try a trick hundreds of times before they succe ed.” That same effort could be made in schoolwork.

Eric Klassen agrees that skateboarding requires kids to stop saying a task is too hard for them. “A baby will attempt to walk 600 to 900 times before he or she is successful,” says Klassen. “We tell students that they shouldn’t say ‘I can’t do it’ unless they’ve tried 600 to 900 times.”

29. Skateboarding is introduced into American schools to ______.

A. encourage students to compete bravely in com-petition

B. teach students how to deal with risks

C. prevent students suffering from heart disease later in life

D. help students form the habit of doing sports

30. The underlined word “eliminates” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.

31. What life lesson do kids learn from skateboarding?

A. To succeed in life you have to learn skateboarding.

B. You will succeed in life if you don’t give up.

C. Only after failing 600 to 900 times can you succeed.

D. There is no hard work after learning skate-boarding well.

32. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. The dangerous PE

B. Skills of skateboarding

C. The new PE

For 40 years, the people of London have been happy to discover in their parks a bird that seems to have made its way from the Himalayas to the capital

of England. With its shocking green body, red mouth, long tail and noisy screech, the rose-ringed parakeet (长尾小鹦鹉) brought a vivid splash of colour to parks

in and around London.

However, the parakeets are no longer welcome. The government has suddenly woken up to the fact that there are many more parakeets in and around London making life harder for the local bird population. Government experts put the number of parakeets at around 30,000. They fear that if the number of parakeets keeps rising, these birds will push out local birds like wood-peckers, starlings and nuthatches from trees to build their own nests.

Not only that. According to an online report by The Independent, the parakeets will then also get control of most of the food available in the parks —seeds, berries, fruit and nuts. The local bird population will then have a hard time staying alive. An organization called the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has asked the government to investigate (调查) what kind of a threat the parakeet brings to local birds. If the government decides that these birds are indeed a threat to local birds, steps will be taken to control the number

of parakeets.

The most surprising thing about the case of the rose-ringed parakeet is that no one quite knows how the parakeets came from India and started breeding (繁殖) in areas around London.

33. Parakeets are no longer welcome mainly because ______.

A. the local birds are being driven out

B. the government doesn’t like the birds

C. they are a threat to people’s health

D. people have a great fear of this kind of birds

34. According to an online report by The Independent, ______.

A. the parakeets’ future threat is impossible

B. the number of the parakeets is around 3,000

C. the parakeets should fly back to the Himalayas

D. the local birds won’t have enough food

35. People are not certain ______.

A. where the parakeets live

B. how the parakeets breed

C. how they flew to London

D. when they started living in London

Dear Editor,

I am a newcomer in my school. I feel very upset because I have difficulty in communicating with my new classmates here. Maybe the reason is that we have a lot of different habits. So I feel very lonely. To make things worse, I have a very strict head teacher, who is always so strict with us students that I’m afraid of him. Sometimes I can’t understand what he does. For example, we have a 30-minute break in the morning, but he doesn’t allow us to go out of the classroom until we have finished a 20-minute handwriting exercise. Frederick William Ⅰ,the King of Prussia , could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history . This gift was the Amber Room , which was given this name because several tons of amber were used to make it . The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow-brown colour like honey . The design of the room was in the fancy style popular in those days . It was also a treasure decorated with gold and jewels , which took the country's best artists about ten years to make . In fact , the room was not made to be a gift . It was designed for the palace of Frederick Ⅰ. However, the next King of Prussia , Frederick William Ⅰ,to whom the amber room belonged, decided not to keep it. In 1716 he gave it to Peter the Great. In return , the Czar sent him a troop of his best soldiers. So the Amber Room because part of the Czar's winter palace in St Petersburg.About four metres long, the room served as a small reception hall for important visitors . Later,Catherine Ⅱhad the Amber Room moved to a palace outside St Petersburg where she spent her summers. She told her artists to add more details to it .In 1770 the room was completed the way she wanted . Almost six hundred candles lit the room ,and its mirrors and pictures shone like gold. Sadly , although the Amber Room was considered one of the wonders of the world , it is now missing . In September 1941, the Nazi army was near St Petersburg . This was a time when the two countries were at war . Before the Nazis could get to the summer palace , the Russians were able to remove some furniture and small art objects from the Amber Room . However , some of the Nazis secretly stole the room itself . In less than two days 100,000 pieces were put inside twenty-seven woooden boxs . There is no doubt that the boxs were then put on a train for Konigsberg, which was at that time a German city on the Baltic Sea . After that, what happened to the Amber Room remains a mystery . Recently , the Russians and Germans have built a new Amber Room at the summer palace . By studying old photos of the former Amber Room , they have made the new one look like the old one .In 2003 it was ready for the people of St Petersburg when they celebrated the 300th birthday of their city . A FACT OR AN OPINION? What is a fact? Is it something that people believe? No. A fact is anything that can be proved. For example, it can be proved that China has more people than any other country in the world. This is a fact. Then what is an opinion? An opinion is what someone believes is true but has not been proved. So an opinion is not good evidence in a trial. For example, it is an opinion if you say “Cats are better pets than dogs”. It may be true, but it is difficult to prove. Some people may not agree with this opinion but they also cannot prove that they are right. In a trial, a judge must decide which eyewit nesses to believe and which not to believe. The judge does not consider what each eyewitness looks like or where that person lives or works. He/she only cares about whether the eyewitness has given true information, which must be facts rather than opinions. This kind of information is called evidence. Unit 2 AN INTERVIEW Pausanias, who was a Greek writer about 2,000 years ago, has come on a magical journey on March 18th 2007 to find out about the present-day Olympic Games. He is now interviewing Li Yan, a volunteer for the 2008 Olympic Games.
