How to get along with your coworkers

We can choose our friends and the people we hang out with everyday, right? 1 This is the reality and we must learn how to cope with it. Check out the tips below to help you. Also, these are tricks to turn challenge into learning source. You can learn something new from other people.

Ready? Here we go:

1. 2

Don’t focus on the differences between you and your colleague, instead keep your focus on the one common thing you both are working on. You may not be working in the same department or have the same seniority level. 3

2. Ask questions.

Colleagues and coworkers are your best references when you are in doubt, whether it is about a new software or a new unfamiliar project. Use every advice someone gives you, since they have been there and experienced better.

Also, many people like it when there is a chance to talk about themselves or when a topic of their expertise comes in the conversation. If you are not sure who is the expert, just ask. 4 Use this to break the ice and present to others that you are engaged. Then move on to ask for help and support.

3. Find different opinions.

5 In most cases, it drives creativity and innovation. People who have different career paths, experiences, work in different industries or have observed different things before becoming your colleagues are more likely to contribute their different perspective, unique ideas, solutions, and valuable information.

A. Focus on the goals.

B. Communicate with your boss.

C. Unfortunately, we can’t apply this to the office.

D. You can ask your boss for help when meeting difficulty.

E. But you have met under the same company name to work towards its goals.

F. Being in a workplace that doesn’t have a clone copy of everyone is an advantage.

G. Get to know your coworkers by asking them about their hobbies or what they like to do.

When we talk to our friends online, typing can become a little boring. We turn to memes (表情包) to make our conversations more fun. 1

At least 10 students who were admitted to Harvard University lost their chance to study there after posting offensive (攻击性的) memes in a private Facebook group, the university’s student newspaper, The Harvard Crimson, reported on June 5. Rather than just regular jokes, the memes “went to truly dark and ugly place, joking about Orthodox Jews (犹太教徒), the gas chambers (毒气室), Mexican children and suicide,” reported CNN. 2 But later, some students set up another group where they traded several offensive memes. When Harvard University found out about the group, it took back the students’ offers. 3

“I appreciate humor, but there are so many topics that just should not be joked about,” incoming freshman Jessica Zhang told the Harvard Crimson. “I do not know how those offensive images could be defended.” 4 “It sounds like Harvard is going too deeply into the private lives of students,”Alan Dershowitz, a retired Harvard Law School professor, told The Guardian. “It may affect them for life.”

5 Last year, a similar Facebook group for admitted Harvard students drew criticism from the university after some of its members posted racist jokes.

A. The incident has caused fierce debates, both in the university and around the world.

B. A world-class university should help students open minds and overcome bias (偏见).

C. However, others believe the university overstepped the boundaries.

D. The group was originally meant for would-be Harvard freshmen to get to know each other before they began university.

E. Jeff Yang, himself a graduate of Harvard, said the university was right to punish the students.

F. But sometimes, sending the wrong meme can make trouble.

G. In fact, this is not the first time Harvard has dealt with a case like this.

As is often the case, when we wake up feeling sleepy and with dark circles under eyes, many of us often make a decision: “I’m going to bed earlier tomorrow!”We are so determined. 1 We are still absorbed in what we are doing without realizing it is already too late the next day. This behavior is called “bedtime procrastination”(睡眠拖延症), and results from lack of self-control and our body clock.

2 According to a study carried out by a group of health psychologists, 5

3 percent of the 2,400 participants said they didn’t follow their sleep schedule, delaying it at least twice a week. They delayed bedtime because they couldn’t stop doing other trivial things (琐事), which were keeping them up in the first place.

People who generally have trouble resisting temptation (诱惑) and following their intentions firmly are also more likely to delay going to bed. They find it hard to control themselves. 3 Our body clock also plays an important role when it comes to bedtime. Those who get up late are more likely to postpone their bedtime than those who wake early every morning. Night owls would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work and school. 4

Therefore, if we want to cure our bedtime procrastination, the intention to go to bed earlier is not enough. 5 We should have a clear understanding that bedtime procrastination is a big problem. The choices we make could turn out to be pretty important for our health.

A. Bedtime procrastination is a common problem.

B. It will have extreme effect on our health sooner or later.

C. Yet, lack of self-control is not the only thing to blame.

D. Unfortunately, chances are that we don’t stick to our promise.

E. It’s their special body clock that plays a part in delaying their bedtime.

F. Biological processes need to support this intention.

G. So we just need to take action to change our sleep model.

From the moment you book your tickets, use this guide to ease your mind and your journey. 1

●Book smartly.

For a calmer journey, fly off-peak –that’s Wednesdays, followed by Tuesday and Saturdays, according to FareCampare, a site that tracks ticket prices from more than 500 airlines.

●Get there in plenty of time.

Plan to arrive at the airport 2 hours before a domestic fight or 3 hours before an international flight to bypass the stress of traffic, long lines and unforeseen problems. Lighten your load immediately with check-in. If security makes you anxious, remember why it’s there. 2

●Steady your nerves.

If turbulence (湍流) makes you very anxious and the distraction of movies and music don’t help, remind yourself: turbulence is not a safety risk. With eyes closed, try to imagine the warm, relaxed energy you feel when you’re smiling. 3 This exercise sets off a hormone that releases stress almost instantly. You might also try a hang gesture that influences energy in the body. Try this series of four moves: alternately touch your thumb to the tips of each finger for a few seconds or longer.

● 4

You can help avoid blood clots (血栓) and even swollen ankles by pointing and stretching your feet often and getting up to pace every half hour to an hour. While you’re up, take turns bending your knees and rising up onto your toes to boost circulation throughout the legs. 5

A. Go for a stretch.

B. Walk to the plane bathroom.

C. Move around as much as possible throughout the flight.

D. If you tend to develop clots, consider taking a mild blood thinner.

E. So you’ll touch down rested, relaxed and ready for anything.

F. The long lines and extensive searches ensure that we all fly safely.

G. Take a deep breath and feel the positive energy spread from head to toe.

Summer is fast approaching and warmer temperatures bring pests like mosquitoes. 1 An easy way to protect yourself from mosquitoes is to use a repellent (驱虫剂). Joseph Conlon, technical advisor of the American Mosquito Control Association, recommends using a repellent that is registered with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), which promises that it causes no harm to humans. 2 Repellents with 25-30% concentration of DEET(避蚊胺)will provide 4-6 hours of protection and it is the “gold standard by which all repellents are judged,” according to Conlon.

3 Conlon explained that mosquitoes can breed in water collected in areas as small as bottle caps, but they have a limited fight range, meaning they can’t travel far. “The best way to avoid them is to not have them around in the first place,” he explained. “If you’ve got them in your backyard, it’s because you’re breeding them in your backyard.”

Is there anything better than the “gold standard”? repellents made from coconut (椰子) oil work better than DEET, a government study says. 4 A slight wind from a fan can help keep them at bay.

If you have water around your house, Beth Ranson, public relations officer for Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, suggests acquiring fish that will eat mosquito larvae (幼虫). 5 She and her team experimented with make mosquitoes infected with bacteria that stop females from producing larvae when they mate. “There’s not a lot of companies producing new chemicals or treatments that we can use,”she explained. “We need new technologies and products as these mosquitoes develop this resistance.”

“If Bill would praise me once in a while, he’d make my life much happier,” a young homemaker said to her neighbor. 1 But unless we hear words of praise from someone else, how can we know that we are valued friends or co-workers?

Anyone who wants to improve his relationships with others needs only to show a sympathetic understanding. The way to express this understanding and give others the feeling of importance and worthiness boils down to this: 2 Praise and tell him about it.

We each have a mental picture of ourselves, a self-image. When we are proud of our self-image, we feel confident and free to be ourselves. We function at our best. When we are ashamed of our self-image, we attempt to hide it rather than express it. 3

A miracle happens to the person whose self-esteem has been raised. 4 He is kinder and more easy-going with those around him. Praise is the polish that helps keep his self-image bright and shining. What has this to do with your giving praise?

A lot. 5 When you add it to his self-esteem, you make him want to like you and work with you.

As artists find joy in giving beauty to others, so anyone who masters the art of praising will find that it blesses the giver as much as the receiver. There is truth in the saying, “Flowers leave some of their fragrance in the hand that bestows (赠予) them.”

A.He suddenly likes other people better.

We managed to slowly make our way to open ground and struggled to even stand at times. There was a moment when I felt the hotel and all the buildings would come down, but they didn’t. 3 I wanted to find them.

Sadly, just walking in that area was a challenge. The street was blocked. 4 After walking around the area for 45 minutes. I decided to make my way back to the hotel. I waited on the open ground at the hotel. Luckily, I got a call from Dawa, saying they were safe. Four hours after the first earthquake, they got back to the hotel.

The weather’s nice, and the youngsters are out of time. Here are a few tips to help you along the way: Nature is all around us. 37 For small kids, there’s likely plenty in the backyard, courtyard, or schoolyard. National parks are great, but kids foster a deep connection with nature close to home! 38 Don’t worry too much about what to do once you arrive at your nature-rich destination. What kids really need is free time to engage all their senses and use their imaginations. You can learn too. What counts is simply to get out there, show that you value the outdoors, and be ready to have fun. 39 In fact, it is not necessary for you to know anything at all about science or nature. And remember, questions are more powerful than answers anyway! Sit back and watch your kids learn. Don’t be too much of a helicopter parent, always saying “no”. Instead, try to spare more time to stay with your kids when necessary.

2017年高考英语阅读专练(七选五)

2017年高考英语阅读专练(七选五) 1. Brain Transplants Research on the human brain has been attracting more and more scientists in recent years. 1 If we compare a human brain to a hard disc, what the scientists are doing is to make better use of the hard disc. The idea that a human brain could be transplanted may come from Frankenstein. In 1999, an experiment turned a bear into a dolphin. 2 They were made of the memory area in the dolphin’s brain containing information about swimming. They had a series of useful information, which was saved into a button-sized chip (芯片). Later the information was transplanted into the action memory area in the bear’s brain. 3 It proved to be a highly successful experiment and a bear was turned into a dolphin. Recently, another memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research Institute of the University of California. The experiment had an entire transplant of the memory area. 4 The transplant was performed from a dog named Genius to a dog named Idiot. Genius could follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius in memorizing. However, Idiot had no contact with people since its birth. It became an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory. 5 When the two dogs woke up, Idiot had grasped all the abilities Genius possessed; it was good at memorizing and sensible. It could follow every gesture and any command given by its master. But Genius gave no response to its master, and did not recognize him at all. A. The experiment was a complete success. B. It included actions, moods, logic, words, images, etc. C. Then it was released by means of electric power. D. Different images have different meanings in the memory area. E. Using the most advanced technology, detailed images were produced. F. Discoveries show that messages are carried by the central nervous system in the brain. G. One of the latest topics is how to change the human brain or combine it with the computer. 2. W. Lloyd Jerome’s Dental Surgery If you walk into W.Lloyd Jerome’s dental surgery in Glasgow,

But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. 36 ___ Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction. ●37 Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough. Why do you follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs? Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this world. ●Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made. We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. 38 You will make mistakes, time and time again.
