1. My Dream

Everyone has his own dream, which can be realized or not and which can be different from time to time. However, there must be a long –term one in one’s mind. In other words, it is not easy to be realized. I have a dream: to pass CET-6 before I graduate from the university. It’s maybe easy for most of my classmates, but to me it is as difficult as cracking the hardest nut in the world.

I have been studying English for about 10 years. It should not be the No.1 task in my university agenda, but too many failures forced me to do so.

I entered one of the most famous universities in China with the almost lowest English mark among all my students. I was really disappointed about that. Although I was not good at English when I was in the middle school, it was not at least about the average. I had no strength to face the frustration. After a semester’s study I was the lowest indeed. I have never cried for study before, but this time I shed tears. Since then I made up my mind to pass CET-6 before my graduation.

Glanced back to my English studying experience, I realized that interest is one of the key factors to grasp knowledge. I study English only for the examination before, but not the language itself. That is the weakest point of me. I must overcome it so as to realize my dream. I made a plan: read one story until I can recite it each day; listen to the tapes related to the books as well. English is not so disgusting for me now. I will persist in doing so even after I pass CET-6. I wish my English would be as good as my native language in the future.

2. What Is Happiness

What is happiness? Perhaps different people have different views on happiness.

Some people think that material satisfaction would bring happiness. But in fact they have overlooked the fact that true happiness comes from the realization of what you have done in your part in advancement of other people’s life as well as your own. Some people try every means to make money at the expense of others interests. These people harm others to benefit themselves. They think the great sum of money they make, the happier they will be. On the contrary, some people think that spiritual satisfaction is the greatest happiness. They do everything for the people.

They live, work, and sacrifice their life for the people.

In my opinion, I believe, one’s value lies in the value of serving the people, the country and the whole society. I am sure those who make contributions, big or small, to our country will be regarded as the happiest people. They should be recognized and respected. The point is what you can do, but not how people look on you. It is how much you contribute, not how much you gain. I think this is the true meaning of life that everyone of us should have.

3. My View on Honesty

Honesty is the long-lasting virtue of people all over the world. Likewise, it is also one of the deeply-held values of the Chinese people. Some people believe that in the market economy, honesty tends to be obsolete. In my opinion, honesty will never be out of date no matter what the situation might be.

Firstly, honesty has been treasured and honest people have been respected throughout history in all parts of the world. People everywhere would regard honesty as a virtue and hate a dishonest person. Secondly, honesty is the basis of interactions among people. People should treat each other sincerely and open their hearts to each other. Only in this way can the relationship among

the people be natural. Thirdly, in the market economy, some people try to get more money at the cost of honesty. To them, a best businessman is one who can cheat most tactfully. Even in this kind of society, honesty is deeply valued by most people.

We can see that not only in history, but also at the present day, honesty was and is valued by the majority of the people and the virtue will not perish so easily.

4. Preserving Our Environment

Man is slowly polluting his environment. He dirties the air with waste gases; he poisons the water with chemical wastes; he damages the soil with fertilizers.

Pollution does great harm to man. As we know, air, water, and soil are necessary to man’s survival. Polluted air, water and soil make people sick and even cause deaths. Environmental pollution is becoming one of the most serious problems that mankind faces.

Now it’s high time that drastic action be taken. First we should make the public aware of the dangers caused by pollution. Second, we should take pollution control measures to reduce pollution. Third, we should keep our pollution under control. After all, the earth is our home.

We must take care of it for ourselves and our descendants.

5. Foreign Investment

Thanks to the open policy in China, more and more foreign businessmen have come to invest, building new factories, mines and other business enterprises, or enlarging and improving old ones. Foreign investment is important in that it supplements the economy of our country. It has the advantage of importing foreign capital, technology, talents, advanced equipment and methods of management.

Ours is a country of vast territory, abounding in natural resources and labor force. Foreign investment can help to explore the resources and make use of the labor force, thus giving our strong points to play. In a word, foreign investment may improve our economy.

Of course foreign investment is of mutual benefit. The foreign businessmen can also reap profits, otherwise they would not come to invest.

To attract more foreign investment, we must maintain the country’s political stability to bring about a good investment environment. Meanwhile we should carry out some good policies, which makes the foreign businessmen believe that to invest in China does pay.

6．No Pains, No Gains

It is obvious to everybody that the only way to achieve one’s goal is to work hard. Just as the old saying goes “ no mill, no meal”. Have you ever seen a man who succeeds just by idling about? Of course, the answer is “No”. So we know if you want to gain something, you will have pains.

The farmers harvest by a year of arduous work; the scientists gain achievements by years of devoted researches; students get good marks by working hard; even the little ants have their food by working hard day and night. I know there are always some people who wait for the opportunities falling on them. They may attribute their failures to lack of good chances. Therefore, there are so many people gaining nothing at last. Clever men know that the more effort they make, the bigger chance they will have to be successful.

So, when others achieve their aspirations and you will gain nothing, don’t complain about the unfair fate and don’t give up, either. Remember: no pains, no gains.

7. Practice Makes Perfect

The saying that “practice makes perfect”means that after you have plenty of practice in what you are doing, you will be perfect in it. He

who practices a lot will master the skill more quickly than he who seldom or hardly practices.

For example, when we learn English, we have to learn grammar, words, expressions and so on. The most important thing may be how to put what we have learned into practice. If you only learn the grammar rules by heart and don’t do enough exercises, it is certain that you can’t understand them perfectly. But if you practice a lot, maybe you will understand them more deeply and you can find some good methods of applying them. Memorizing English words whenever time permits, we can easily memorize them and can even find a way to memorize them more quickly.

There is another example. A famous singer can sing very well. Of course, his talent is very important, but practice is necessary. It is necessary to practice to make the singer sing better and better.

It is evident that practice is important for everybody. If you want to improve you study and work, you should remember that practice makes perfect.

8.My View On Following The Fashion

Nowadays more and more young people prefer to follow the fashion. On this phenomenon, different people have different views. It is held that one should follow the fashion so as not to be despised

or considered eccentric. But it is also held that one should have one’s own judgment.

Those who hold the first opinion think that society is progressing and one should adapt oneself to the constant change. In their opinion, if everyone always sticks to the old fashion, there won’t be any change and naturally there won’t be progress. In contrast, those who hold the second view think that one shouldn’t follow the fashion without discrimination and one should have one’s own judgment and characteristics.

As for me, I agree with the latter opinion. Admittedly, one should be flexible and adapt himself to the situation, but this is not to say that one should follow the fashion without discrimination because the fashion may not be beneficial. We should consider whether the fashion is favorable or unfavorable. Moreover, one should have one’s own characteristics. If everyone follows the same fashion, there will not be variety and the whole society will be monotonous.

9.Why Do We Learn English

The English language has become an international language, because it is used by people in the most countries in the world now.

In the open times, if you want to do business with foreigners, you must learn English because

most of them speak and write in English, English is one of the working languages at international meetings today, most of valuable books are written in English, if you know much English, you will read newspapers and magazines in English and learn a lot of knowledge about interaction better. You also can do what you should do for the world peace.

English is very important to us, but many students don’t know why he should learn it. I hope that all the students should pay more attention to English study and use it freely.

10. On talents

Why did some people become world-famous and admired by millions of others? Were they really mote talented than other people? Or did they succeed through hard work?

In my opinion, talents play a less important role than hard work in people’s studies or work.

First of all, if we work hard, we can make good use of our talents. As is known to all, Madame Curie won the Nobel Prize twice for her great scientific discoveries. She achieved her success by making experiments one after another. Besides, hard work can cultivate our talents. Edison, the inventor of light, was said to be stupid when he was young. By making great efforts in his work, he become more and more clever and succeeded in

his work .in fact, we can all get ahead in our studies or work through hard work.

In short, in our studies and work, talents are not so important as hard work. Working had, our talents can be fully made use of and well cultivated.

12.How to Make Friends

Everyone needs friends. A friend can give us help and share our difficulties and happiness. But how can we make friends?

First, to make friends, you must be friendly to others. Smile at others and you are sure to get a smile in return. You should try to make a stranger feel at home wherever he happens to be. Think more of others than of yourself and never judge a person by his appearance and clothes.

Second, friends should negotiate instead of quarrel. When you don’t agree someone, please discuss with him.

Finally, never believe in those who leave you when you are in trouble. And never leave your friend when he is in trouble. Remember, a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Friends should be faithful to each other. So long as you can put your friend’s interests in front of yours, you will have a lot of good friends.

13.Habits

Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. When a person does a certain thing again and again, he’ll be obliged to do it in the same way by some unseen force. Thus habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult and sometimes almost impossible to get rid of it. Therefore, it is very important that we should take care in the formation of habits.

Good habits have many advantages. Going to bed early and getting up early makes us healthy. Diligence helps to succeed. Honesty helps win the respect and trust of others.

If we form bad habits, such as rudeness, laziness, lying and stealing, we might be mined by them.

We ought to keep away from bad habits and try to acquire habits good for ourselves and others.

14.On Confidence

As we all know, “failure is the mother of success.” But I just want to say “success is the baby of confidence.”

First of all, confidence makes us happier in our life. Life is like a wonderful song, a bright and colorful painting. If confidence is with us in our life, we will find that life really becomes richer and more interesting.

Then, confidence makes us brave and courageous. If we lack confidence in ourselves, how can we overcome difficulties we meet with? If we have no confidence in ourselves, how can we succeed in developing ourselves in the future? Without confidence, nothing can be accomplished.

Finally, I would like to use the following words as our mutual encouragement: “if you think you can, you can.”

15.Train Travel or Air Travel

Air travel has two advantages over train travel. First, it can save much time. We can fly from Beijing to Guangzhou just in two hours, but by train, we have to spend 24 hours or more. Second, air travel is more comfortable, because the plane flies so smoothly that we can rest well during the

trip, while the train is crowded sometimes and passengers have to sit for a long time, which makes them tired. But train travel also has its advantages. For example, traveling by train costs only 250 yuan while traveling by air will cost 900 yuan. Besides this, outside of the train’s windows, we can enjoy the views of many big cities, such as Zhengzhou, Wuhan, and Changsha.

So I think different people like different ways of traveling.

16.Social Practice in Education

It is a common weak point among today’s college students that the majority of them have little knowledge of social reality. Social practice is a bridge between their theory and reality. Timely participation in social practice will benefit them all through their life.

Social practice must become an organic component of the nation’s higher education. If so, students are sure to learn more than their textbooks. Their participation in social practice and knowledge of society they learn and national conditions might strengthen their sense of social responsibility; their close contact with the working people might help them to apply their knowledge to the solution to the practical problem.

In recent years, many college students have been sent to the basic level to keep in contact with workers and farmers. The process has proved effective in enriching their knowledge of reality. So social practice is very important for college students.

17.The Importance of confidence

Whatever one does, one should do it with confidence. If one has no confidence, there is little possibility that one would ever achieve anything, especially when one is faced with drawbacks or hardships. This truth seems to be evident. However, in reality we do see a lot of people who complain that they like the ability to do something or that their difficulties are too great to be overcome. For someone, this might be true. But for many others, this only shows that they have lost heart.

Why do people often feel frustrated even though they are capable of doing something? There are, among others, two main reasons. First, these people do have a correct estimate of themselves. Second, they overestimate the difficulties.

It is possible to build up faith in oneself by having the right attitude towards one’s abilities. We should never underestimate one’s abilities. But believe in the proverb: “Where there is a will,

there is a way.” Confidence is the promise for fulfilling a task successfully.

18.Making good use of time

A famous American poet says well, “Life is short, art is long.” Everyone should work hard and study well. Never waste any time. Now we are young, it’s high time for all of us to make up our minds to study for our county. Youth time is like a happy bird. If it flew away, it would never return. Nothing is more precious than time.

Today some students spend too much time enjoy their lives such as eating, clothing, traveling and so on. Others spend too much time reading books of small value and little importance. A lot of time has been wasted. They have no idea that waste of time means wasting of one’s life.

While we are young and full of vigor, let’s work hard.

19.Failue and success

Failure is a common thing in one’s life. Almost everyone experience failure in his life. When one fails in his attempt in doing something, he often feels upset. Some people may yield to failure and flinch from it. But others will stick to and achieve the final success.

Success is what everyone expects. It may lead to fame and glory. When one success in doing

something, he gets so excited that he often neglects all the successful attempts he has done.

As the old saying says, ”Failure teaches success.” It is true that failure is an important factor towards success. The way to success is full of various difficulties and obstacles. Many important inventions or discoveries were achieved after hundreds of failure. And only those successes which have been achieved after many failures are really valuable and praiseworthy.

20.Travel

A succession of beautiful scenery makes one feel delighted. A long stay in the same surroundings seems to make everything the same. Routine work often makes one bored. But if you take a trip or a long journey on your holidays to some scenic sports or historic sites, that will make great difference.

Travel can widen one’s knowledge. The farther you go, the more you will learn about different politics, economics, customs as well as geography. If you travel the whole world some day, you will fully understand the globe on which we live.

However, too much travel causes tiredness. You get on a taxi or a bus, you travel on a train or in a plane, being patient with the hours needed

on your route from one place to another, that will make you exhausted after a while.

21.Smile

Before you do everything, smile first.

When you need some help, you should say:“Excuse me.” At the same time, if you show your unhappy face, he will be unhappy too. How can you get the help while he has no pleasure? So show your smile, and you will get his help.

In fact, smile is a difficult job. It seems very difficult for you to smile when you are sad. Don’t be afraid. Make up your mind to try once, only once, and you will find that you are much better in heart.

People often say that gold and silver are the most valuable things in the world. But I don’t

think so. In my opinion, to read books is more valuable than anything else.

The old saying : “To open a book is always helpful ” clearly shows us how good it is to read a book.

Books are our friends. They introduce us different kinds of knowledge. They lead us down the road to success.

Books are our teachers. They teach us truth, science, literature, and philosophy of life. Besides, they increase our knowledge, enlarge our experience, strengthen our character and do many other things which we can not do without them.

We have to learn as long as we live. But our life is limited, and the knowledge is boundless. There are many things which are very necessary to learn and there also many things which should be avoided. Books tell us what is good and what is evil. And only books can tell the good from the bad.

Therefore to read more books is the best policy for our young students.

23. An Opening Speech
