Passage 1

Doctors have known for a long time that very loud noises can cause hearing damage or loss. The noises can be the sound of an airplane or machines in factories or loud music or other common sounds found at home and at work. A person only needs to hear the noise or little more than one second to be damaged.

An American scientist has found that using aspirin can increase the short term hearing loss or damage from loud noise. He did an experiment, with a number of men at a university who had normal hearing. He gave them different amount of aspirin for different periods of time, then he tested their hearing ability. He found that students who were given four grams of aspirin a day or two days suffered much greater short term hearing loss that those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about twice as great.

The Scientist said millions of persons in the United States use much larger amount of aspirin than were used in the study. He said these persons face a serious danger of suffering hearing loss from loud noise.

Passage 2

Karen Brown had spent nine months in the hospital. As she grew weaker, the 16-years-old girl asked her parents, “Am I going to die?” Her mother told Karen the truth. After learning the bad news, all Karen wanted was to go home. Her parents decided to satisfy her wish. When she was carried through her front door, Karen smiled for the first time in months.

A friend of the Brown’s family, Sheila Peterson, knew of this and offered to help. She volunteered not only to find nurses, but also to raise money for Karen’s care. Money was received from so many people that Sheila created a fund, “Friend of Karen”.

After leaving the hospital, Karen lived for 11 months. “And those months were happy ones for her,” says her mother, “Thanks to Sheila”.

In recent years, especially during the 1960’s, there was much discussion about “the brain drain (人才流失),”which dealt with the problem of students and learned people who left their own countries for other countries that offered better chances for study, research, and employment. For example, according to a report from U.N. between 1962 and 1966 more than 50 percent of all engineering graduates of Iran and 14 percent of Iranian scientists left their county for work abroad. Over 30 percent of Chilean (智利的) engineers and 15 percent of Turkish (土耳其的) physicians also went to work in other countries. Probably the greatest brain drain occurred among young scientists who had gone abroad to study. Many of them had planned to return to their countries to teach but chose to remain in more industrialized nations where they were able to continue their work and their research in fields in which there were no job possibilities at home.

Recent students show that the brain drain to the United States may be decreasing. Many foreign students are going home again, and in some cases American scientists are leaving the United States for employment in other countries. The main reasons are that good jobs are becoming fewer here, money for national research has been sharply cut, and university fellowships reduced too. However, in the field of medicine the drain to the United States still goes on. Today more that one of every five American doctors is foreign-born, and several thousand foreign doctors immigrate to the United States each year. Over eighty countries have asked the State Department to sent students who are skilled in important fields such as medicine back home when their study programs are over.
