When I was about 11 years old, I was at my friend Jenny's house after school one day, and we were doing homework. While I was there a friend of Jenny's mom's came over to visit.

I don't remember her name or__16__what her face looked like. I just remember her__17__,her voice and the lesson she taught me.

I can still see her hands reaching out for mine in our __18__. They were so beautiful, I thought. Then I heard her saying, (and not at all in a condescending(居高临下)manner)“Oh no, that is NOT __19__you shake hands. Let me show you how.”

After that, I just remember her voice explaining the__20__of a good handshake,__21__a positive sense of __22__,looking the other person in the eye, making that first moment__23__...

I think in that exchange I first understood__24__.

I respected her for taking the __25__to teach me about one of those subtleties(微妙的事情)in life. I__26__the fact that she didn't__27__down to me because I was 11 or because I didn't __28__something. And so because of that I felt somewhat respected, I mean in the way she__29__me. It felt good to be talked to like a __30__person, and not like whatever the__31__perception(观点)of an 11-year-old would be. I also appreciate her instilling(逐渐灌输)the idea that if someone doesn't know or isn't__32__of something, have compassion(热情)and point him or her in the right__33__;don't be afraid to share your__34__.

I think of her every time I meet someone__35__... and I'm so thankful for her little lesson.

16.A.else B.even

C.still D.otherwise

17.A.figure B.arms

C.eyes D.hands

18.A.expectation

B.introduction

C.interview

D.reception

19.A.how B.when

C.why D.where

20.A.procedure B.value

C.attraction D.importance

21.A.indicating B.conveying

C.predicting D.producing

22.A.self B.pride

C.others D.impression

23.A.preserve B.occur

C.matter D.last

24.A.manners B.equality

C.charm D.respect

25.A.time B.chance

C.efforts D.occasion

It takes sb. time to do sth.“花费某人时间做……”。

26.A.recalled B.preferred

C.appreciated D.realized

27.A.look B.stand

C.bend D.talk

bend down“弯下腰来”,look down upon/on“瞧不起;歧视”。

28.A.know B.like

C.feel D.correct

29.A.reminded B.treated

C.taught D.helped

30.A.close B.good

C.real D.great

31.A.general B.extreme

C.realistic D.wrong

32.A.short B.careful

C.aware D.fond

33.A.way B.direction

C.aspect D.stage

in the right way表示“以正确的方式”,而此作者表达的意思是:把对方引导到正确的方向上来。

34.A.knowledge B.sense

C.wisdom D.experience

35.A.important B.strange

C.familiar D.new

A

We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways. It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter and crying. There are also a number of striking similarities in the way different animals show the same feelings. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry. This is probably because they are born with those behavior patterns.

Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like“he went pale and began to tremble”suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, “he opened his eyes wide”is used to suggest anger in China whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese“surprise”can be described in a phrase like they stretch out their tongues! Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike.

Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people's faces. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do.

36.According to the passage,________.

A.we can hardly understand what people's gestures mean

B.we can not often be sure what people mean when they describe their feelings in words or gestures

C.words can be better understood by older people

D.gestures can be understood by most of the people while words can not

37.People's facial expressions may be misunderstood because________.

A.people of different ages may have different under standing

B.people have different cultures

C.people of different sex may understand a gesture in a different way

D.people of different countries speak different languages

答案:B由文章最后一段第一句“Even in the same culture,...”

38.In the same culture,________.

A.people have different abilities to understand and express feelings

B.people have the same understanding of something

C.people never fail to understand each other

D.people are equally intelligent

答案:A由末段第一句“Even in the...express feelings.”

39.From this passage, we can conclude________.

A.words are used as frequently as gestures

B.words are often found difficult to understand

C.words and gestures are both used in expressing feelings

D.gestures are more efficiently used than words

40.The best title for this passage may be________.

A.Words and Feelings

B.Words, Gestures and Feelings

C.Gestures and Feelings

D.Culture and Understanding

B

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions—and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.

Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀地) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.

“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions, ”Jack said. “Westeners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.”

According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.

The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surpised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.

It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”

In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

New rules and behaviour standards(行为规范)for middle school students came out in March. Middle schools are going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won't only have high marks. They will also be kids who don't only have high marks. They will also be kids who don't dye their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules.

Tell the truth.

Have you ever copied someone else's work on an exam? Don't do it again! That's not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don't tell your parents you have done homework.

Do more at school.

Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone.

Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself.

Be open to new ideas.

Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you'll discover EarthⅡsome day. Don't look down on new ideas. Everyone's ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.

Protect yourself.

Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don't let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know.

Use the Internet carefully.

The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren't for kids, to try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Can't you find any good Web sites for children? Here are some:

Telephones and cell phones ringing at the same time; e-mails being sent and replied in every single day. This is the reality for many people, and sometimes it is for me, too.

I really enjoy having all these ways to communicate with my family and friends. However, when I need to use them for other important reasons, I don't get the same satisfaction. Last week, for example, I sent an e-mail message to the company which sold me an airline ticket. It was completely futile because they couldn't understand nor solve the problem by E-mail.

I can tell you about another unpleasant experience I had. Last month I bought some CDs over the Internet. The next day, they sent me a message confirming my order and telling me that they didn't have all of the CDs that I wanted. They would deliver those they had and “LATER”send the others. I really hated that word “later”. Later? How much later? When? I still haven't gotten them.

What I have to say about all this technology is that it was created to make things easier for us, but sometimes the result is totally the opposite. I usually like to use a cell phone, but it really gets on my nerves when I am talking to someone and the transmission goes bad and we get cut off. Instead of helping me, technology just troubles me.

I am not addicted to these“high-tech toys”. However, it would be great if they really could

be used successfully whenever we need them. Unfortunately, for me they are much more toys than they are tools to do my work. Talking face to face or using regular phones are still the best ways to communicate.

51.What could be the best title of the passage?

A.Technology Makes It Easier to Communicate

B.Technology Doesn't Always Help

C.Disappointment About Online Shopping

D.Don't Be Addicted to High-tech Toys

52.The underlined word“futile”probably means________.

A.useful B.useless

C.necessary D.effective

53.When the author bought some CDs over the Internet,________.

A.they promised to send him later

B.he hasn't received any of them

C.they only sent some of the CDs to him

D.he was told what he wanted had been sold out

54.The author thinks the cell phone troubles him because________.

A.he feels nervous when using it

B.he can't get through to the other person

C.they don't hear each other on it

D.they are cut off when talking

可根据第四段的“the transmission goes bad and we get cut off.”判断。

55.What do the words“high-tech toys” refer to in the passage?

A.Regular telephones.

B.Cell phones and e-mails.

C.Tools to do one's work.

D.Toys made with high-tech.

Book 3 Unit 1 Festivals around the world B3U1P1-3 FESTIV ALS AND CELEBRATIONS Ancient Festivals Festivals and celebrations of all kinds are held everywhere. The most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of the cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Other celebrations were held when hunters could catch animals. They would starve if food was difficult to find, so they celebrated when they had food. They lit fires and made music because they thought these festivals would bring a year of plenty. Festivals of the Dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead, or satisfy and please the ancestors, who could return either to help or to do harm. In Japan the festival is called Obon, when people should go to clean the graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They light lamps and play music because they think that this will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico they have the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people might eat food in shape of skulls, and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The festival of Halloween had its origin as an event in memory of the dead. It is now a children’s festival, when they can go to their neighbours’ homes and ask for sweets. They dress up and try to frighten people. If they are not given anything, the children might play a trick. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can be held as an honour to famous people or to the gods. One of these is the Dragon Boat Festival in China, which honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Yuan. Another is Columbus Day in the USA, in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. In India there is a national festival on October 2 to honour Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter ,and because a season of agricultural work is over. In European countries it is the custom to decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and people get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their animals, flowers, fruits and vegetables, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. In China and Japan there are mid-autumn festivals, when people admire the moon and give gift of mooncakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat, and may give children lucky money in the red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the lunar New Year together. In some Western countries there are very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. Frederick William Ⅰ,the King of Prussia , could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history . This gift was the Amber Room , which was given this name because several tons of amber were used to make it . The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow-brown colour like honey . The design of the room was in the fancy style popular in those days . It was also a treasure decorated with gold and jewels , which took the country's best artists about ten years to make . In fact , the room was not made to be a gift . It was designed for the palace of Frederick Ⅰ. However, the next King of Prussia , Frederick William Ⅰ,to whom the amber room belonged, decided not to keep it. In 1716 he gave it to Peter the Great. In return , the Czar sent him a troop of his best soldiers. So the Amber Room because part of the Czar's winter palace in St Petersburg.About four metres long, the room served as a small reception hall for important visitors . Later,Catherine Ⅱhad the Amber Room moved to a palace outside St Petersburg where she spent her summers. She told her artists to add more details to it .In 1770 the room was completed the way she wanted . Almost six hundred candles lit the room ,and its mirrors and pictures shone like gold. Sadly , although the Amber Room was considered one of the wonders of the world , it is now missing . In September 1941, the Nazi army was near St Petersburg . This was a time when the two countries were at war . Before the Nazis could get to the summer palace , the Russians were able to remove some furniture and small art objects from the Amber Room . However , some of the Nazis secretly stole the room itself . In less than two days 100,000 pieces were put inside twenty-seven woooden boxs . There is no doubt that the boxs were then put on a train for Konigsberg, which was at that time a German city on the Baltic Sea . After that, what happened to the Amber Room remains a mystery . Recently , the Russians and Germans have built a new Amber Room at the summer palace . By studying old photos of the former Amber Room , they have made the new one look like the old one .In 2003 it was ready for the people of St Petersburg when they celebrated the 300th birthday of their city . A FACT OR AN OPINION? What is a fact? Is it something that people believe? No. A fact is anything that can be proved. For example, it can be proved that China has more people than any other country in the world. This is a fact. Then what is an opinion? An opinion is what someone believes is true but has not been proved. So an opinion is not good evidence in a trial. For example, it is an opinion if you say “Cats are better pets than dogs”. It may be true, but it is difficult to prove. Some people may not agree with this opinion but they also cannot prove that they are right. In a trial, a judge must decide which eyewit nesses to believe and which not to believe. The judge does not consider what each eyewitness looks like or where that person lives or works. He/she only cares about whether the eyewitness has given true information, which must be facts rather than opinions. This kind of information is called evidence. Unit 2 AN INTERVIEW Pausanias, who was a Greek writer about 2,000 years ago, has come on a magical journey on March 18th 2007 to find out about the present-day Olympic Games. He is now interviewing Li Yan, a volunteer for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Unit 1 Festivals around the world FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS Festivals and celebrations of all kinds have been held everywhere since ancient times. Most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Sometimes celebrations would be held after hunters had caught animals. At that time people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months. Today’s festivals have many origins, some religious, some seasonal, and some for special people or events. Festivals of the dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead or to satisfy the ancestors, who might return either to help or to do harm. For the Japanese festival Obon, people should go to clean graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They also light lamps and play music because they think that will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico, people celebrate the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The Western holiday Halloween also had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. It is now a children’s festival, when they can dress up and go to their neighbours’ homes to ask for sweets. If the neighbours do not give any sweets, the children might play a trick on them. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can also be held to honour famous people. The Dragon Boat Festival in China honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Y uan. In the USA, Columbus Day is in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World. India has a national festival on October 2 to honour Mohandas Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter and the agricultural work is over. In European countries, people will usually decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and will get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their farm produce, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. China and Japan have mid-autumn festivals when people admire the moon and in China enjoy moon-cakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat and may give children lucky money in red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the Lunar New Year together. Some Western countries have very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. These carnivals might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of al kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival for Christians around the world. It celebrates the return of Jesus from the dead and the coming of spring and new life. Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country, covered with cherry tree flowers, looks as though it is covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our work for a little while.
