Somehow we spent the whole afternoon, 53 and playing. We had played a kid’s version of gang 54 called “Civil War,” and then later we had got in on the real thing. We fought with chains, danced bare-footed, 55 other games. It was a normal childhood. I used to look forward to a fight, but now it is getting a little boring.

第三部分:阅读理解(共15 小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Over 1,600 years ago, a man named Nicholas became the bishop(主教) of a village called Myra in Turkey. Later, he was made into a saint and became one of the most popular figures in Christianity. He is now the saint of children, elders and many other groups of people. He has more churches named after him than any other saint and has become one of the best-known figures in the world. Nicholas of Myra was very kind, merciful and generous, especially to young people. This is the man Father Christmas is based on.

One day, when St Nicholas was walking past a house, he overheard a man telling his three daughters they were so poor that they did not have enough money to get married. Later, in the darkness of night, Nicholas went back to the house and threw a small bag of gold down the chimney. He did the same thing the following night, and then again the third night, providing enough gold for all three girls to be able to get married. This is why now people say Father Christmas comes down the chimney. It is also said that one of the bags of gold fell into a stocking that was hanging up to dry over the fireplace. This might be why people hang stockings over the fireplace for Father Christmas to put the presents in.

There are lots of other stories about St Nicholas giving aids to others. Many of these involve St Nicholas saving children from great danger. To honor him, many Europeans give gifts to their children on St Nicholas’Day, which is celebrated on 6 December every year.

The traditional picture of St Nicholas is very different from Father Christmas today. St Nicholas is usually

shown as a tall, clean-shaven man without the beard and moustache that Father Christmas is pictured with. St Nicholas is also presented as being much thinner than Father Christmas and wearing the traditional clothes of a religious leader, not a red suit like Father Christmas’s.

56. The man Father Christmas is based on St Nicholas because ___________.

A. he was the bishop of Myra in Turkey

B. he is now the saint of children only

C. he was very kind, merciful and generous

57. What was one of the things St Nicholas did to help others?

A. He helped every poor child by throwing small bags of gold down the chimney.

B. He saved children from great danger.

C. He gives presents to children on Christmas Day.

D. He told lots of stories to give aid to others.

58. From the passage we can infer that ________.

A. there have been many saints in the world

B. a saint is the most popular figure in the world

C. St Nicholas liked sending presents in stockings

D. St Nicholas died on 6 December

59. Which of the following can NOT describe St Nicholas’ appearance?

A. Tall, clean-shaven, and much thinner than Father Christmas.

B. With beard and moustache like Father Christmas.

C. Wearing neat traditional clothes of a religious leader.

D. Wearing a suit unlike Father Christmas in red.

A cactus (仙人掌) stood all alone in the desert, wondering why it was stuck in the middle of nowhere. “I do nothing but stand here all day,” it sighed. “What use am I? I’m the ugliest plant in the desert. My spines(脊骨) are thick and prickly(多刺), my leaves are rubbery and tough, I can’t offer shade or juicy fruit to any passing traveler. I don’t see that I’m any use at all.” All it did was stand in the sun day after day, growing taller and fatter. Its spines grew longer and its leaves tougher…. It truly was strange-looking.

“I wish I could do something useful,” it sighed. By day, hawks circled high overhead. “What can I do with my life?” the cactus called. Whether they heard or not, the hawks sailed away. At night, the moon floated into the sky and cast its pale glow on the desert floor. “What good can I do with my life?” the cactus called. The moon only stared coldly as it goes on its way. A lizard crawled by, leaving a little trail in the sand with its tail. “What worthy thing can I do?” the cactus called. “You?” the lizard laughed, pausing a moment. “Worthy deed? Why, you can’t do anything! The hawks circle ways overhead, tracing delicate patterns for us all to admire. The moon hangs high like a lantern at night, so we can see our way home. Even I, the lowly lizard can decorate the sands with these beautiful brush-drawings as I pull my tail along. But you do nothing but get uglier every day.”

And so it went on year after year. At last the cactus grew old, and it knew its time was short. “Oh, God” it cried out, “I’ve wondered so long, and I’ve tried so hard. Forgive me if I’ve failed to find something worthy to do.” But just then the cactus felt a strange stirring and unfolding. At its very tip, like a sudden crown, a glorious flower suddenly opened in bloom. Never had the desert known such a blossom. Its fragrance (香气) perfumed the air far and wide and brought happiness to all passing by.

The butterflies paused to admire its beauty, and even the moon smiled when it rose to find such a treasure. The cactus heard a voice. “You have waited long,” the God said. “the heart that seeks to do good reflects my glory, and will always bring something worthwhile to the world, something in which all can rejoice (得到喜悦) --- even if for only a moment.”

60. What does the underlined word “sailed” in the second paragraph mean?

A. surfed on the water

B. flew in the sky

C. moved on a ship

D. dived into the water

61. Whose attitude to the cactus is the worst?

A. The hawk s’.

B. The moon’s.

C. The lizard’s.

D. The butterflies’.

62. In which paragraph can you find the topic sentence of this passage?

A. The first.

B. The second

C. The third.

D. The fourth.

63. What attitude should lowly ordinary people have in order to build harmonious society?

A. Aiming high and do admirable things like hawks.

B. Learning from the cactus to be worried and ashamed of itself.

C. Acting as the lizard to be proud of itself and look down upon others.

D. Having a heart that seeks to do good and never gives up.

We don’t use that much slang… or do we…? When I was working out at the gym with a French friend of mine, Pascale, a friend of his came up and enthusiastically asked, “What’s up?” Pascale paused a moment, took a step backward and looked up, checking out the ceiling.

Realizing he didn’t get it, I quickly piped up and explained, “Oh, that’s slang for ‘How are you?’” He looked confused, obviously not understanding how “What’s up?” could possibly have anything to do with “How are you?” But his friend didn’t stop there.

“So, Pascale, did you hear how the Italian soccer team licked the French team?” As Pascale’s eyes widened and his mouth dropped open, an expression I hadn’t seen since the days of “Our Gang”comedy, I suddenly realized where he had gone with that one, and could only imagine what image his mind was conjuring up.

It was at that moment that I realized for the first time that there was absolutely no way a nonnative speaker of English could fully understand an American movie, TV show, news broadcast, or even a typical conversation without help because our language is loaded with nonstandard English, i.e., slang and idioms.

Since we use both terms, slang and idiom, we ought to define them. I asked a group of ESL teachers, “What is the difference between slang and idiom?” Everyone had their own answer. After consulting several dictionaries, all having slightly different opinions on the definitions, I would like to propose these definitions: SLANG: Nonstandard vocabulary of a given culture. In other words, slang is typically a nonstandard word, not a phrase as in an idiom. Slang words may or may not have alternative literal meanings. They may be “made-up” words.

IDIOM: A phrase that is commonly understood in a given culture to have a meaning different from its literal meaning. A good example of this is “to bend over backwards”. This phrase is commonly understood in our culture to mean “to make a great effort in order to accomplish something.” The literal meaning, however, is the physical act it describes, of which few may actually be capable of doing!

64. When Pascale heard “What’s up?” at that moment, he thought his friend meant “________”.

A. What are you here for?

B. What has happened to you?

C. How are you?

D. What is on the ceiling?

65. What is NOT true about slang and idiom in American English?

A. They are not actually used in daily life.

B. They are typically nonstandard English.

C. They are frequently used in public occasions.

D. They are even used in formal media and conversations.

66. Which of the following is NOT the definition of slang?

A. It is standard vocabulary of a given culture.

B. It is nonstandard vocabulary of a given culture.

C. It is a typical nonstandard word.

D. It is not a phrase as in an idiom.

67. Which of the following examples belong to slang and idiom?

a. To bend over backwards.

b. Two heads are better than one.

c. I quickly piped out and explained,…

d. The Italian soccer team licked the French team.

e. His mind was conjuring up.

f. To make a great effort to accomplish somethin

g.

A. a b c f

B. b c d e

C. a c d e

D. b c d f

In a society where lung and breast cancers are leading causes of cancer death worldwide, early detection of the disease is highly desirable. In a new scientific study, researchers present astonishing new evidence that man’s best friend, the dog, may have the ability to contribute to early cancer detection.

Researchers show scientific evidence that a dog’s extraordinary smelling ability can distinguish people with both early and late stage lung and breast cancers from healthy people. Researchers first discovered this in the case report of a dog warning its owner to her presence of a melanoma (恶性黑素瘤) by constantly sniffing the skin lesion (损伤). Later studies published in major medical magazines proved the ability of trained dogs to detect both melanomas and bladder cancers. The new study is the first to test whether dogs can detect cancers only by sniffing the breath of cancer patients.

In this study, five household dogs were trained within a short 3-week period to detect lung or breast cancer by sniffing the breath of cancer patients. The experiment consisted of 86 cancer patients (55 with lung cancer

and 31 with breast cancer) and 83 healthy people. All cancer patients had recently been diagnosed with cancer and had not yet undergone any chemotherapy treatment (化疗). The dogs were presented with breath samples from the cancer patients and the healthy ones, captured in a special tube. Dogs were trained to give a positive identification of a cancer patient by sitting or lying down directly in front of a test station containing a cancer patient sample, while ignoring healthy samples.

The results of the study showed that dogs can detect breast and lung cancer between 88% and 97%. Moreover, the study also proved that the trained dogs could even detect the early stages of lung cancer, as well as early breast cancer. The researchers concluded that breath analysis may become a potential of cancer diagnosis.

68. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Can dogs smell cancer?

B. Dogs and treatment

C. A new research on breast cancer

D. An interesting experiment on lung cancer

69. In this scientific study, five household dogs, _______ lung cancer patients and _____ healthy

people are involved.

A. 86; 88

B. 31; 97

C. 55; 83

D. 86; 83

70. The last sentence of the passage means _______________.

A. doctors won’t be worried about detecting cancers any more

B. dogs will be the only way to detect cancers

C. breath analysis can be used in diagnosing cancers in the future

D. dogs can use its smell to identify people

Standard and labels(标签)of organic food

Organic food is produced by farmers who use renewable(可恢复) resources and pay much attention to environmental quality.

Organic food differs from normally produced food. Organic meat, eggs, and diary products come from animals that are given no hormones(激素). Organic fruit and vegetables are produced without using pesticides and fertilizers. Organic food contains at least 50% more nutrients, minerals and vitamins than non-organic food. By only buying and eating organic food, it is a widely agreed fact that you will be eating more healthily.

Before a product can be labeled “organic”, a government-approved certifier(证明机构) will exam the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to make his products meet organic food standards. Companies that handle or process organic food must be examined, too.

When you go to the supermarket, how can you judge it is organic food? You can look at package labels and watch for signs in the supermarket. Along with the national organic standards, strict labeling rules were made to help consumers know the exact organic content of the food they buy.

Single-ingredient foods:

Look for the word “organic” and a seal(图章) on vegetables or fruits. Or they may appear on the signs. The word “organic” and the seal may also appear on packages of meat, milk, eggs, cheese and other single-ingredient foods.

Foods with more than one ingredient:

You must watch its organic percentage. Look for the name and address of the certifier of the packaged products that contain at least 70 percent of organic ingredients.

Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech today is “Cooperate with others”.

In this busy, modern world, if we want to complete our work effectively and efficiently, we must all learn to cooperate with others. If we lose our partner, then we will fail. Cooperation can save us a lot of time and energy. Additionally, we can learn much from our partners by cooperating them.

When we cooperate with someone we like, we will feel very happy. And we can share our pleasure and sadness with him. But it can be difficult to be cooperative with someone we dislike. In such a situation, we may focus on our work, instead of our partner. Perhaps in working together with him for a long time, we’ll learn that he is a man to get along well with. Even if this doesn’t happen, it’s still worth a try.

How can we become a good partner? In my opinion, we should try to listen to others’ opinions. If he makes mistakes, we also try to point them out. At the same time, we mustn’t beat others to ma ke them in unfavorable position.

Thank you for your listening!
