During the Elizabethan era, the Golden Age in English history, music played an important role in the lives of people. For example, a man who couldn’t sing to win the hearts of others with his perfect voice was not considered to be a gentleman. This itself reflects the importance of this form of music. Queen Elizabeth herself was skilled in musical instruments. It was her love for music that saw talented composers(作曲家) and musicians receive encouragement for showing their skills. It was known that Queen Elizabeth hired around 70 musicians and composers for her court. These musicians and composers played various types of music such as English ballads(歌谣), church music and even lively dance music. The popularity of Elizabethan music grew and it was considered to be a rule to be able to sing or perform by people who belonged to all classes. Queen Elizabeth herself could play musical instruments, such as the lute or virginal.

Elizabethan music thus entered the homes and lives of all people. Music was seen being played at the dinner tables when families came together for a meal. People belonging to the higher class of society were known to hire a musician to be able to enjoy music. In case of people who could not really hire such musicians, they always had at least one musical instrument and one servant who could play such an instrument.

Street music also developed in the Elizabethan era. Street musicians carried musical instruments that were light such as violins and other instruments to play various styles of music. Of course, this kind of songs sung by street musicians were more traditional compared to the ballads played in the court of Queen Elizabeth. Street musicians didn’t really last long and soon gave way to theatre musicians.

There are some marked features about Elizabethan music. This style of music was recognizable for its rhythm. There were ways in which a particular theme was played in many ways. Some of the songs that belonged to such music in the Elizabethan era were on similar lines as the baroque (巴洛克风格) music.

Elizabethan music can be broadly classified into the following types —church music, court music, street music, theatre music and town music. The church was considered to be of great importance in this era as far as music was concerned. Due to the church, a style of music developed which was known as the choral polyphony (复调音乐). Music was also used as a development for theatre. This was seen in the plays of William Shakespeare. These plays saw the emotions being expressed through poems together with music. These forms of music were used to express various emotions. Therefore theatre music reached new heights of success in the Elizabethan era.

With the popularity and need for music, the need for various musical instruments also increased with time. This also saw a variety of instruments used together to create different symphonies (交响乐).

So here’s the bad news for the 5.3 million New York City workers who depend on the subways to get from place to place: The entire system — all 1,050 km and 468 stations of it — is shut down, much of it flooded with corrosive (腐蚀性的) salt water. The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA交通管理局) freely admits it has never faced anything like the severe damage from Hurricane Sandy, and has absolutely no idea when the system will be up and running. “We’ll know it after everything is don e,” says MTA spokesman Charles Seaton. But the good news is—well, never mind. There isn’t any. Really, it’s that bad, and if there’s no telling when things will be repaired, there’s even less ways of knowing what the eventual price will be. Yes, there ar e lessons to be learned from the current emergency for both New York itself and urban planners everywhere; the question is whether they’ll be noticed.

New York’s issues are partly a function. New York’s subway system is 108 years old. Its tunnels and stations are located close to or under rivers and harbors, and water seepage(渗水) is unavoidable. “We have three pump trains, 300 pump rooms and dozens of portable pumps around the system,” says Seaton. “Even on a day when there’s no rain, we pump out 13 million gallons of water.”

Hurricane Sandy, of course, put a lot more stress on the system than an ordinary rainless day. Flood water in lower Manhattan rose to 4.2 m, beating the record of 3 m set by Hurricane Donna in 1960. Much of Manhattan below 40th St. is without electricity. No subway system will ever be truly immune to weather events. This is especially so in great cities like New York, whose very greatness in part depends on their nearness to rivers, harbors and other bodies of water.

But spending money o n the city’s basic transport system is perfectly possible, and indeed essential. That kind of preventive investment always seems too expensive at first, but only until

you’re suddenly faced with the much higher repair bills New York is dealing with today. And as oceans continue to warm and sea levels continue to rise, the problem is only getting worse. In the past 20 years, Hurricanes Andrew, Floyd, Katrina, Rita, Dean, Irene, Isaac and others have tried to remind us of that simple truth. Now Hurricane Sandy is adding her voice. One of these days, we might actually listen.

50. What can we infer from the first paragraph?

A. The subway system may start running soon.

B. The whole subway system is flooded with corrosive salt water.

C. It is difficult to repair the New York subway system.

D. The MTA doesn’t know how to clean the subway system.

51. Before Hurricane Sandy, New York’s subway has long been troubled by _______.

A. corrosive salt water

B. water seepage

C. old pumps

D. poor power systems

52. In the last paragraph, which is mentioned as a threat to New York’s subway system?

A. Climate change.

B. The technical problem.

C. Nearness to rivers.

D. The high running cost.

53. To solve the problem caused by weather events, the author suggests _______.

A. changing the subway’s location

B. building a new power system

C. making preventive investment

D. repairing the pumping system

54. The passage is mainly about ________.

A. the effects of Hurricane Sandy

B. New York’s flooded subways

C. the bad weather in New York

D. New York’s pumping system

It was a bitterly cold Denver morning. This was a perfect day for staying home, waiting for mom to bring a cup of soup. I had a job, speaking at the Denver Conference Center to a couple hundred other people who, like me, were unable to stay home for mom to bring us soup. Instead, we gathered at the conference center.

I needed a battery for my wireless microphone, suddenly I found. There was no choice, really.

I needed a battery. So I headed into the wind, head bowed, and collar up, shuffling (拖着走) in thin shoes.

Around the corner, I saw a small sign announcing that a 7-Eleven convenience store was within sight. If I walked quickly, I could reach the front door and shelter from the wind without drawing a breath of cold air.

Inside the 7-Eleven were two people. The one uniformed behind the counter was named Roberta. Judging by her appearance, Roberta probably wished that she were home bringing hot soup and comforting words to her own children. Instead, she was spending her day arranging her co-workers for business in a nearly deserted downtown Denver, she would be a refuge (庇护) for

the few who were foolish enough to be out on such a cold day.

The other refugee from the cold was a tall, elderly gentleman who seemed comfortable with his surroundings. He was in absolutely no hurry to step back through the front door and risk sailing through town because of the wind and ice-covered sidewalks. I couldn’t help thinking that the gentleman had lost his mind or his way. To be out on such a day, shuffling through the goods of a 7-Eleven, the man must be completely crazy and stupid.

I di dn’t have time to be concerned with an old man. I needed a battery, and there were a couple hundred important people who had things left to do with their lives waiting for me back at the conference center. We had a purpose.

The old man somehow found his way to the counter ahead of me. Roberta smiled. He said not a single word. Roberta picked up each of his purchases and entered each amount into the cash register. The old man had wandered himself into the Denver morning for a muffin (松饼) and a banana. What a sorry mistake it was! For a muffin and a banana, a sound man could wait until spring and then perhaps enjoy the opportunity to hang out on the streets. Not this guy. He had sailed himself into the morning as if there were no tomorrow. Perhaps there would be no tomorrow. After all, he was pretty old.

When Roberta had figured the total, a tired, old hand fished deep into the folded coat pocket. The fishing hand caught a change purse as old as the man himself. A few coins and a wrinkled dollar bill fell onto the counter. Roberta treated them as though she were about to receive a treasure.

When his purchases had been placed into a plastic bag, something extraordinary happened. Not a word had been spoken by her elderly friend, an old, tired hand slowly extended over the counter. The hand trembled, and then steadied. Roberta spread the plastic handles on the bag and gently slipped them over his wrist.

Roberta smiled larger.

She picked up the other tired, old hand, and in a second, she was holding them both, gathered in front of her brown face. She warmed them, top and bottom, then the side. She reached and pulled the scarf that had flown nearly off his broad. She pulled it close around his neck. Still he said not a single word. He stood as if to carve the moment in his memory.

She looked him in the eyes and said, “Now, Mr. Johnson, I want you to be very careful.” As she usually did, she lightly and sincerely added, “I need to see you here tomorrow.” With those last words ringing in his ears, he moved slowly into the bitter Denver morning.

I then realized something that he had come in search of, instead of a banana and a muffin.

55. The author wrote the first two paragraphs in order to _______.

57. It was a mistake, in the author’s eyes, for the old man to buy a muffin and a banana because _____.

D. it was not a good time to enjoy them in such cold weather

58. According to the passage, which of the following can best describe Roberta?

Study Tips for Exams

It happens at times that you study for whole nights before an exam but still fail to remember a word in the actual paper. This happens because of improper planning and too much stress. The following are a few study tips for exams, which will help you to answer your papers with

confidence.

61. _________ It is better to have all the study material available with you before you start reading. This not only includes your texts and notes but also things like a dictionary and reference books with you. This has two advantages —you do not need to break your concentration by searching for books and it also keeps the mood of studying. Secondly, it gives you feel of being “prepared” for the exams, as you have all the necessary things and the only thing left is to start studying!

62. _________ The most common mistake that students make is that they start studying a day or two before exams! What most of the students do is to study only the so-called important points. As a result, even if the paper is easy, you get a low score only because you didn’t know the entire syllabus (课程提纲)! So start studying at least a month before the exams. If time does not permit you to learn your lessons, at least go through them regularly. This way you will be familiar with the syllabus and won’t find it difficult to understand.

63. _________ If you have descriptive subjects, do not just recite the answers. Try to understand what you are reading for this is the best method for good recall at the time of exams. The major disadvantage of reciting the answers is that even if you forget one word of the answer during your examination, you tend to go completely blank. Instead of this, if you understand the chapter well, you can write the answer on your own at any time.

64. _________ There are some easy techniques to study well, like reading the lesson casually, at least twice. And while reading, mark the important points with a pencil and move on. When you start reading for the second time, read those underlined points first and then the rest of the text. Before going to exams, read only the underlined points. This is one of the last minute study tips for exams. Another handy tip that is useful especially for the lengthy lessons of geography is to make short rhyming words with each initial letter of an important paragraph.

65. _________ Some people are comfortable studying in the early mornings, while some like to study late nights. Find out the time when you are the freshest and most relaxed and choose that time for your studies, as that is the time when you are capable of doubling the studies you do at other timings. So, have a schedule of your own.

Mama says all the dust is due to the drought. The dirt sifts into everything. It covers our clothes. We have to wash the dishes before each meal. We rarely drive the truck because Papa fears the dust from the road will ruin the motor. When my sister, Faye, and I walk to school, we wear kerchiefs over our mouths so we don’t breathe in the dirt. On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay home and help Mama put wet sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in. Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while I played with Faye in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped. I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust. All the birds flew away. “I must warn Papa,” I thought to myself. To avoid her panicking, I gently told Faye to go back inside where she would be safe, and then headed off to the field.
