Nanning: With the number of college graduates climbing to a record high this year—some 2.12 million are entering the job market, an increase of 670,000, or 46.2 percent, over last year, many people are asking if China's first “McDonald's generation”, born in the early 1980s, can stand the intense competition and find a place in the job market. They say this will be a test of both China's job market and its carefree younger generation.

“Do not worry. We'll get whatever we want," they tell each other to ease their own anxiety.

Born in the early days of the country's reform and opening to the outside world, growing up in the market economy, the youngsters, familiar with McDonald's and Mickey Mouse, love to eat hamburgers, and wear foreign-brand jeans and T-shirts and worship Bill Gates. Compared with their parents, they enjoy more freedom in looking for a job—and with that freedom come burdens. These college graduates are seen scouring recruitment information in newspapers and journals, the Internet and job markets nationwide.

Shortly after hotel management major Hao Wenhua, a young woman from Chongqing in Southwest China, failed the recruitment test of a five-star hotle in Guilin, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. She appeared at a job market in Nanning, approximately 300 kilomenters from Guilin, looking rather tired.

Many businesses and companies say that they would take on experienced staff rather than the new graduates who are short of the experience of how to succeed in today's fastpaced society.

A. People who were born in the early days of China's reform and opening to the outside world.

B. Hotel management is not a good major in college.

C. There is intense competition in job market.

D. Many businesses and companies don't like new college graduates.

63. What's the best title for the passage?

B. McDonald's Generation Has Grown up.

C. McDonald's Generation Faces Job Hunt.

D. The Number of College Graduates Climbs to the Highest Point.

With the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the United States today is the death penalty(死刑). Many argue that it is an effective deterrent(威胁) to murder, while others think there is no enough proof that the death penalty reduces the number of murders.

The argument advanced by those opposed(反对) to the death penalty is that it is cruel and inhuman punishment, that it is the tile mark of a bad society and finally that it is of questionable effectiveness as a deterrent to crime(罪行) anyway.

In our opinion, the death penalty is a necessary action. Throughout recorded history there have always been those peculiar persons in every society who made terrible crimes such as murder. But some are more dangerous than others.

For example, it is one thing to take the life of another in time of blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan and carry out the murder of one or more people in the style of a butcher. Thus, murder, like all other crimes, is a matter of different degree. While it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer.

The value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion. But the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them. Their belief is proved by the fact that the death penalty prevents murder. For example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time in California, the murder rate remained between three and four murders for each 100,000 population. Since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the murder rate has risen to 10. 4 murders for each 100,000 population. The sharp climb in the state's murder rate, which began when killing stopped, does not happen by chance. It certainly shows that the death penalty does deter many murderers. If the law about death penalty is vetoed(否决), some people will be murdered some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. This is really a life or death matter. The lives of thousands of people must be protected.

64. The main purpose of this passage is to .

A. speak for the majority

B. support a veto

C. speak ill of the government

D. argue for the value of the death penalty

65.Which of the following is among the heated arguments across the USA besides death penalty?

A. Air pollution.

B. The war against Iraq.

C. Equal rights.

D. Election fo president.

66. The numbers in the last paragraph show that .

A. if they stick to death penalty, the number of murders will be reduced

B. death penalty almost stopped from 1954 to 1963

C. the population of California has risen

D. death penalty is of little value

67. It can be inferred that the writer thinks that .

A. the death penalty is the most important problem in the United States today

B. the second type of murderers (in Paragraph 4) should be sentenced to death

C. the veto of the law about penalty is of little importance

D. the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime is not to be discussed

D

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human condition is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful(有压力的)conditions. Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life cha

nges and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移注意力)us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support—money aid, material resources, and needed services—that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

68. Interpersonal relationships are important because they can .

A. make people live more easily

B. smooth away daily problems

C. deal with life changes

D. cure types of illnesses

69. The researches show that people's physical and mental health .

A. lies in the social medical care systems which support them

B. has much to do with the amount of support they get from others

C. depends on their ability to deal with daily worries and troubles

D. is related to their courage for dealing with major life changes

70. Helping a sick neighbor with some repair work in spare time is an example of .

A. instrumental support

B. informational support

C. social companionship

D. the strengthening of self-respect

71.What's the subject discussed in the text?

A. Interpersonal relationships.

B. Kinds of social support.

C. Ways to deal with stress.

D. Effects of stressful condition.

There is much discussion today about whether economic (经济的) growth is desirable. At an earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have proved proper. Now, however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems. Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much , too fast.

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is coming near to certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible bad effects of industry on the natural environment ,and the continuing increase in the world's population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These proponents of economic growth

believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial(财政的) resources required to protect out natural surroundings from industrialization.

This discussion over the desirability of continued economic growth is very important to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mention cannot be ignored(忽视). To find an answer, economists and the business community must pay attention to these problems and continue discussing them with one another.

72. According to those who argue against economic growth we must slow down for the following

reasons EXCEPT that .

A. our natural surroundings are in danger of being destroyed by industry

B. the fixed supply of natural resources marks a point beyond which economic growth cannot

continue

C .the world population is ever increasing

D. more effects should be made to improve the quality of our material life

73. The passage is mainly about .

A. the importance of the discussion on economic growth

B. the advantages and disadvantages of economic growth

C. the present discussion on economic growth

D. the relationship between economic growth and environment

74. We may infer from the context the underlined word“proponents”most probably means .

A. arguments in support of something

B. disagreements

C. people who argue for something

D. people who argue against something

75. We may infer from the passage that .

A. the author describes the case as it is

B. the author is for economic growth

C. the author is against continued economic growth

D. the author is very much worried about the problems caused by continued economic growth

(Text 10)

This is really a very fast game, the fastest I have seen this year. Both sides are fighting for the ball all the time. The crowd enjoy every minute of it. They are shouting at the top of their voices. Willis has the ball now. This is only his third game for England, but he's playing so well that it won't be his last. I'm quite sure. Willis passes the ball to Cotton, Cotton kicks it over the heads of the Frenchmen, towards the goal. But he's too far away. Dupont picks it up easily, and throws it to Patou, out on the left. France and England still have one goal each, and there are only two minutes left of the game. But during that time, anything can happen. Patou kicks the ball across to Crozat. It's a beautiful kick, but Stivens jumps and just stops the ball with the side of his head. But Meunier is there, he passes it to Crozat, and Crozat, without waiting a second, puts the ball into the back of the goal. It surprises everybody. I've never seen a goal like it. And the game is over. France has won the cup.

“Animal Land”is my favorite program. First I like small animals very much. Second, the host has the ability to make the program lively and interesting. Third, from

the program I gained a lot of knowledge about animal life which I didn’t know before. By watching the program, I understand the relationships between people and animals and people and nature. Also I know the importance of nature protection.

I know animals are part of nature. They can not be separated from the humans. If t

he human beings want to live well, we must keep nature in balance.

Finally, we should let everyone understand this and show our love toward nature and animals and stop doing harm to them.
