We all have our own summer traditions. In 1939. for my thirteen-year-old great-grand-

mother Toby, summertime meant going to the Muny Theatre. Every summer ,The Muny would present live professional musicals that were sponsored so that even the low-income peo-

ple could see them. Every summer Sunday, Toby and her friend Sylvia had a standing date to

watch a Broadway at America's oldest outdoor musical theater.

After lunch, Toby packed herself a peanut-butter sandwich for dinner and threw some

change into her pocket for ice cream. and headed to Sylvia's house so that they could walk to-

gether to Forest Park. An hour later. they arrived at the air-conditioned Missouri History

Museum. where they could cool off a little during the hottest part of the afternoon. Toby and

Sylvia's favorite part of the museum was the antique dress show. After a quick stop, they

jumped to the Muny Theatre.

Most of the time they would get to the theater early, before the gate opened for audi-

ences. Instead of waiting for the gate to open, Toby and Sylvia would climb over the back

fence and run straight to their favorite seats in the front center row of the "free seats" section.

Toby loved everything about these breathtaking musicals-from the actors and actresses to

their costumes. But Toby's favorite parts were the joyful music and dancing, and the ice

cream she bought.

The theater was really something special to my great-grand-mother. and that love hasn't

left my family. My grandmother took theater lessons as a child instead of dance classes like

her friends did. My mom and all her siblings (兄弟姊妹) acted in plays when young. My aunt

Children and young adults who are hooked on computer games seriously will be offered

help and care by the UK's National Health Service (NHS) following the launch of the country's first specialist clinic. The service will treat children and young adults aged 13-25.

Concerns surrounding the length of time children and teenagers are spending online pla-

ying games are growing, specifically the effect it can have on a young person s mental health.

Gaming addiction for children and young adults is now officially recognized as a medical condi-

tion after the World Health Organisation (WHO) included it in their International

Classifica-

tion of Diseases. NHS chief executive Simon Stevens said in a meeting: "Health needs are

constantly changing, which is why the NHS must take actions-this new service is a response

to a new problem, part of the increasing pressures that children and young people are exposed

to these days. "

Fiona Smith, a professor at the NHS said. "As technology becomes more accessible and

more advanced. it's unsurprising that more and more young people are possibly being serious-

ly affected by excessive screen time to the point where it affects their daily lives. The damage

of addiction of any kind goes beyond the child or young person, causing suffering to parents,

families and friends. "

Many have welcomed the project, because it focused more on the problems of excessive

use of video games. bad mental health and highly irregular lifestyles. The plan has also been

met with doubt. with some experts saying that the NHS and taxpayers should not be expected

to pick up the pieces of this problem. Gaming companies have a responsibility to their users

and should do more to prevent harmful behaviour. instead of promoting it. Online gaming

firms make millions of pounds in profit. They should be responsible for the financial cost of

treating gaming addiction.

While gaming disorder could be a big problem for a small minority of gamers. there is a

fear of concerned parents rushing to the conclusion that their children play "too much" and

that this is harmful for their mental health. So further research and a deeper understanding of

these problems are required.

B. NHS was set up to deal with children's game addiction.

C. People are increasingly worried about teenagers game addiction.

D. The kids' increasing pressures come totally from game addiction.

9. What is Fiona Smith's attitude towards the amount of screen time by teenagers?

A. Indifferent.

B. Unfavorable.

C. Moderate.

D.

Supportive.

10. Who should pay for the costs of treating gaming addiction in some experts' opinion?

A. NHS.

B. The Government.

C. Online gaming companies.

D. People playing games.

11. What will be the focus on researchers' next work according to the text?

A. Reasons why people like playing games.

B. Identifying who should get help from NHS.

C. The kinds of gaming disorder.

An egg in a much bigger bottle isn't very interesting, but the science behind how a little

bigger egg got into a bottle is and seems impossible. This experiment shows the effects of air

pressure and partial vacuums (部分真空状态).

To create the vacuum, simply drop a burning piece of paper into the glass bottle. which

will heat up the air in the bottle causing some air molecules (分子) to move out. Then the egg

is put into the neck of the bottle and then the fire will go out due to a lack of oxygen. Once the

air cools down again in the bottle. the outside air is at a higher pressure compared to the pres-

sure inside the bottle. The inside air molecules will bunch up, because they no longer have

enough energy to stay as far apart and this causes a partial vacuum.

The steps of the experiment are as follows. Remove the shell off of the boiled egg. Then

put water around the neck of the bottle and also wet the egg. This will allow the egg to slide

into the bottle easily and the water will help to create a seal (密封状态) around the neck of the

bottle so that air cannot flow into the bottle. allowing the partial vacuum to be created. Now

light a piece of paper and put the burning paper into the bottle. Then place the egg in the neck

of the bottle and wait for it to get pushed into the bottle.

Now that you have an egg in a bottle you're probably wondering how to get the egg out of

the bottle. It is also possible using the same principles. Only this time you have to raise the

pressure inside the bottle. This can be done by blowing into the bottle while the egg is sitting

in the opening of the bottle. Then when you stop blowing, the egg will fall into place covering

the opening of the bottle and the high pressure in the bottle forces the egg out

of the bottle.

12. What is a must to ensure the success of the experiment?

A. A boiled egg with a very hard shell.

B. A bottle whose neck is just smaller than the egg.

C. A piece of paper with nothing on it.

D. A big basin of water that is hot and clean enough.

13. Why has a piece of paper to be burned in the bottle?

A. To make the bottle become bigger.

B. To increase the air pressure inside.

C. To drive out some air molecules.

D. To make the bottle hotter.

14. Which of the following steps comes first?

A. Lighting the paper and put it into the bottle.

B. Placing the egg in the neck of the bottle.

C. Wetting the bottle's neck and the egg.

D. Removing the boiled egg's shell.

15. What is the best title of the text?

A. How Can An Egg Be in a Bottle?

B. How Can An Egg Becomes Smaller?

C. An Unbelievable Experiment

D. An Experiment Against the Natural Law

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余

选项。

Do what you love and love what you do. and success will come? Well, we wish.

16 It takes more than just passion to succeed in anything.

●Passion is just emotion; care is an action.

Wishing hard and wanting something really badly won't give you anything. Passion

is a

"barely controllable emotion". and emotion is not always reliable. 17

In today's world where people always talk about finding your passion, it still seems vague

(模糊的) to many. On the other hand. if you're asked to find something you care about.

it's

easier for you to take action.

●. 18

There's a lot of work to do besides being enthusiastic. For example, you can

be enthusi-

astic about painting, but if you don't have any art sense and painting skills, you can hardly

become an expert in painting. 19 The belief that you'll do it well anyway as

long as you

like it is just an illusion (幻觉).

●Learn not just what you care about. but what's around that too.

When you’ ve got your focus, try to map out t he skills you need to get better

at that.

When you have the learning plan ready, apply that course you need, get yourself the tools re-

quired and start learning and practicing.

●Success is a way to go, but you can start right now.

20 But if you've already got your passion. it will be good enough to make that your

foundation and motivation to keep moving. Start mapping out the skills you need and take ac-

tions. Instead of passively letting your passion wander around. be active and do something

that will push you forward.

A. Care is different, it implies actions.

B. "Like it" doesn't mean "Good at it".

C. Passion alone doesn't guarantee success.

D. However, reality is not as simple as we want it to be.

E. You are good at something and you need the world to know.

F. Desire to make a difference in the world with your strengths.

G. To become an expert, you need to be always learning and improving your skills.

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow

石家庄二中2020-2021学年第一学期高三英语学科周测试卷8、23

石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? A. Information offered by TOI. B. New findings on hypertension. C. How TOI is put into smart phones. D. How the TOI technology works. 2.
