This Thursday, millions of Americans will join family and friends to give thanks and eat a

meal with a history that is centuries old.

Early European settlers in North America held other ceremonies where they gave thanks. But

what Americans often consider the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony. Today we

House plants do more than just brighten up a room with color and living energy. Along with being pleasing to the eyes, they bring real health benefits to your body. Not only do complaints about headaches, stress, and colds fall when indoor plants are present, but also they can help to keep the air clean.

A study in America found that common house plants could improve air quality. It was reported that house plants were able to remove about 87 percent of air toxins (有毒物质) in 24 hours.

House plants make people feel calmer and more optimistic, says Bruno Cortis, a professor from University of Chicago. Interestingly, he says that studies have shown that hospital patients

All across the United States, honeybees are flying away from their hives (蜂房) and dying.

Empty hives are causing a lot of worry about some important food crops.

Bees give us a lot more than delicious honey. They enable plants to produce the fruits and

nuts we enjoy by carrying pollen (花粉) from one plant or flower to the next. The wind pollinates

(授粉) oats, corn, and wheat, but many other plants (like apple and cherry trees ) depend on

insects, bats, and birds.

Bees live in groups of about 40,000 indi viduals called colonies. “The colony is what we call a

super-organism,” says Dr. Jeff Pettis of the Bee Research Laboratory at the U.S. Agricultural

Research Service. “When a lot of bees die, the whole colony is at risk.” Researchers like him government and university labs all over the country are trying to figure out why so many bee

colonies are dying.

However, Pettis explains, bees are hard to study. Most die away from the hive, so researchers

don’t have dead bodies to examine. And when researchers return to a hive after two weeks, about

half the bees they studied on their first visit will be dead, replaced by new ones in the natural life

cycle of bees. Besides, these busy insects fly up to two miles away from their hive in search of

pollen and nectar (花蜜) from flowers. So when bees pick up diseases or get exposed to poisons in

their environment, it is hard to know exactly where that happened.

But researchers do have some ideas about what could be affecting bees’ health. They could b sick from poisons widely used to kill insects, or they might not be getting enough good food to
