Many people often say there is more stress (压力) in today's society than in years past. In fact, these people are comparing our lives with that of the cave man, who didn't have to worry about the stock market or the atomic bomb. Actually stress is a normal state of affairs, and it's important that people understand what they are talking about when they speak about stress. The playwright George Bernard Shaw once said humorously, "England and America are two nations divided by a common language. If he were writing today, he might add "divided by a common technology--E-mail."

Two completely different styles of e-mail have formed on either side of the Atlantic--Euromail and Amerimail. Amerimail is informal and chatty. It's likely to begin with a "Hi"and end with a "Bye". The chances of Amerimail containing a smiley face or an "xoxo" are disturbingly high. We Americans are unwilling to dive into the meat of an e-mail. We feel we have to first inform recipients(收信人)about our vacation on the island which

was really excellent except the jellyfish were biting and the kids caught a bad cold, so we had to skip the whale watching trip, but about that investors' meeting in New York…. Amerimail is a bundle of contradictions (矛盾), casual and yet direct, respectful yet over proud. In other words, Amerimail is America.

Euromail is stiff and cold often beginning with a formal "Dear Mr. X" and ending with a simple "Sincerely". You won't find any mention of kids or the weather or jellyfish in Euromail. It's all business. It's also slow. Your correspondent (通信者)might take days even weeks to answer a message. Euromail is exactly like the Europeans themselves.

Recently about 100 managers were asked on both sides of the Atlantic whether they noticed differences in e-mail styles. Most said yes. Here are a few of their observations:

"Americans tend to write (e-mails) exactly as they speak."

"Why don't you just call me instead of writing five e-mails back and forth?"

"Europeans are less interested in checking e-mail".

"In general, Americans are much more responsive to e-mail--they respond faster and provide more information. '

So which is better, Euromail or Amerimail? I realize it's not popular these days to suggest we have anything to learn from Europeans, but I'm fed up with an inbox filled with casual, barely meaningful e-mails from friends and colleagues. If the alternative is a few earnestly written, carefully worded bits of Euromail, then I say: "Bring it on."

For as long as I can remember, I have been very bad at arguing with people. As soon as someone disagrees with me, I get angry because I feel attacked, like the other person is out to show that I am wrong. And for some reason, I hate being wrong! So my immediate reaction is to get very defensive, I raise my voice, and I end up saying something I later regret. Needless to say, the whole thing ends with me beating myself up, and the other person feeling alienated(疏远)from me. This bothers me especially because my mother does the exact same thing and I hate it!

I have noticed this tendency in me for a long time now, but I have never been able to stop. I did some anger management work with a therapist(治疗专家)a while ago, but because I moved and turned to an advisor at school who cannot see me regularly, I have not been able to continue this important work. They tell you to stop and count to 10, control your breathing, calm yourself down before you talk. But that's the whole problem, I could never think of stopping myself until it was too late! April 6, 2005 BERLIN -- It has led to numerous expeditions, several mysterious deaths and plenty of books. But 60 years after Nazi officers hid metal boxes in the depths of Lake Toplitz, a new attempt is being made to recover the Third Reich's fabled (传说中的) lost gold. The Austrian government has given a U.S. team permission to make an underwater expedition to the bottom of the lake.

Groups of treasure hunters have been racing to Lake Toplitz ever since a group of diehard Nazis escaped to this picturesque part of the Austrian Alps in the final months of the Second World War. With U. S. troops closing in and Germany on the edge of collapse (垮台), they shipped the boxes to the bank of the lake, and sunk them.

Nobody knows exactly what was inside. Some believe the boxes contained gold stolen by German troops throughout Europe and carried back to Germany. Others think that they contained documents showing where possessions confiscated (没收)from Jewish victims were hidden. The state company that controls the lake, Bundesforste AG, has signed a contract with Norman Scott, an American treasure hunter, who hopes to solve the mystery.

Later this month, Scott will begin a detailed underwater expedition of the 350-foot-deep lake, though there is official doubt that there is anything left to find. "I really don't know if there is anything down there, but we want to resolve the mystery once and for all," Irwin Klissenbauer, a director of Bundesforste AG, told the Guardian Tuesday. "The aim at first is to measure the lake.” He added: "This is a beautiful area. You have heard of Loch Ness. For Austrians this has been a bit like Loch Ness. Lots of people come here. And whether there is gold down there or not, the mystery has been very good for tourism."

Klissenbauer said that under the terms of the deal--which allows the U.S. team to dive for the next three years -- any treasure found will be divided between the Americans and the Austrian state. "Obviously if they recover anything which has a recognizable owner, under Austrian law we have to give it back."
