In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor n amed Jacob Davis who had inven ted a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets (铆钉). This made the pants last a long time . Because Davis did not have the money to pate nt his idea, he offered to share it with Strauss if Strauss would agree to pay for the pate nt . 4 .

By the time Strauss died in 1902, he had made a great contribution to American fashion .

Will con sumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their in come in creases, or will they continue to dema nd luxuries and pers onal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would in volve wants that can be achieved best by com mun ity actio n. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignoran ce, crime and prejudice. 5 In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.
