英语范文背诵Types of Speech

Standard usage includes those words and expressionsunderstood, used, and accepted by a majority of the speakersof a language in any situation regardless of the level offormality. As such, these wo rds and expressions are well defined and listed in standarddictiona ries. Colloquialisms, on the other hand, are familiar words and idio ms that areunderstood by almost all speakers of a language and u sed in informal speech or writing, butnot considered appropriate fo r more formal situations. Almost all idiomatic expressions arecolloq uial language. Slang, however, refers to words and expressions un derstood by a largenumber of speakers but not accepted as good, formal usage by the majority. Colloquialexpressions and even slan g may be found in standard dictionaries but will be so identified.Bo th colloquial usage and slang are more common in speech than in writing.

Colloquial speech often passes into standard speech. Some slang a

lso passes into standardspeech, but other slang expressions enjoy momentary popularity followed by obscurity. Insome cases, the m ajority never accepts certain slang phrases but nevertheless retain s them intheir collective memories. Every generation seems to req uire its own set of words to describefamiliar objects and events. It has been pointed out by a number of linguists that three culturalco nditions are necessary for the creation of a large body of slang exp ressions. First, theintroduction and acceptance of new objects and situations in the society; second, a diversepopulation with a large number of subgroups; third, association among the subgroups and themajority population.

Finally, it is worth noting that the terms "standard" "colloquial" and "slang" exist only asabstract labels for scholars wh o study language. Only a tiny number of the speakers of anylangu age will be aware that they are using colloquial or slang expression s. Most speakers ofEnglish will, during appropriate situations, selec t and use all three types of expressions.

英语范文背诵Suburbanization

If by "suburb" is meant an urban margin that grows morerapidly t han its already developed interior, the process ofsuburbanization b egan during the emergence of the industrialcity in the second quar ter of the nineteenth century. Before that period the city was a sm allhighly compact cluster in which people moved about on foot and goods were conveyed byhorse and cart. But the early factories bui lt in the 1840's were located along waterways andnear railheads at the edges of cities, and housing was needed for the thousands of peopledrawn by(由……拉

munities along their borders.

With the acceleration of industrial growth came acute urban crowd ing and accompanying socialstress-conditions that began to appro ach disastrous proportions when, in 1888, the firstcommercially su ccessful electric traction line was developed. Within a few years th e horse-drawn trolleys were retired and electric streetcar networks crisscrossed and connected everymajor urban area, fostering a wa ve of suburbanization that transformed the compact industrialcity i nto a dispersed metropolis. This first phase of mass-scale suburba nization was reinforcedby the simultaneous emergence of the urba n Middle Class, whose desires for homeownershipin neighborhoods far from the aging inner city were satisfied by the developers of si ngle-familyhousing tracts.

英语范文背诵American Revolution

The American Revolution was not a revolution in the sense ofa radi cal or toal change .It was not a sudden and violentoverturning of t he political and social framework, such as lateroccurred in France and Russia, when both were already independent nations. Significa ntchanges were ushered(引导,展

America's War of Independence heralded(预报,宣

Yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one mig ht suppose. In some states, notably Connecticut and Rhode Island, the war largely ratified a colonial self-rule alreadyexisting. British o

fficials, everywhere ousted, were replaced by a home-grown gover ning class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and Pa rliament.(现在就算是政治革命也不如以前想像的那样具有革命性。

Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie, known as the King of Steel, built the steelindustr y in the United States, and , in the process, becameone of the wea lthiest men in America. His success resulted inpart from his ability t o sell the product and in part from his policy of expanding during p eriodsof economic decline, when most of his competitors were red ucing their investments.

Carnegie believed that individuals should progress through hard w ork, but he also felt stronglythat the wealthy(有钱人,富

"He who dies rich, dies disgraced," he often said.

Among his more noteworthy contributions to society are those that bear his name, includingthe Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh, whic h has a library, a museum of fine arts, and a museumof national hi story. 英语范文背诵Television

Television-----the most pervasive(弥漫性的,渗透性的)

and persuasive(有说服力的,使人信服

的) of moderntechnologies, marked by rapid change and growth-is movinginto a new era, an era of extraordinary(非凡

的) sophistication and versatility(多功能

性),which promises to reshape our lives and our world. It is an ele ctronic revolution of sorts(各种各样

的), made possible by the marriage of television and computer tec hnologies.

The word "television", derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and La tin (visio: sight) roots, canliterally be interpreted as sight from a di stance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through asophisticate d system of electronics, television provides the capability of conver ting an image(focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses(刺激,推动

力), which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulses, w hen fed into a receiver(television set), can then be electronically re constituted into that same image.

Television is more than just an electronic system, however. It is a

means of expression, as wellas a vehicle for communication, and a s such becomes a powerful tool for reaching otherhuman beings.

The field of television can be divided into two categories determine d by its means oftransmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad-based airwave transmissi on of television signals. Second, there is nonbroadcast television,w hich provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest group s through controlledtransmission techniques.

Traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcasttelevision because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to whatexists today. During those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by th e broadcastnetworks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, who have been the maj or purveyors(承办

商)of news, information, and entertainment. These giants of broadc asting have actually shaped not onlytelevision but our perception(感

觉) of it as well. We have come to look upon the picture tubeas a s ource of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium a

s the passive viewer.(我们作为被动的观众把我们的角色溶入这种动态的媒体,我们已经开始把显像管看做一种娱乐的资源。)

英语范文背诵The Beginning of Drama

There are many theories about the beginning of drama inancient G reece. The one most widely accepted today is basedon the assump tion that drama evolved from ritual(典礼,宗教仪

式). The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning , human beings viewedthe natural forces of the world-even the sea sonal changes-as unpredictable, and they soughtthrough various means to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measu res whichappeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened intofixed rituals. Eventually stori es arose which explained or veiled(以面纱遮盖,隐

避) themysteries of the rites(仪式,典

礼). As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but thestories, l ater called myths, persisted and provided material for art and dra ma.

Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained theseed of theater because music, dance, m asks, and costumes(服

装) were almost always used,Furthermore, a suitable site had to b e provided for performances and when the entirecommunity did no t participate, a clear division was usually made between the "actin g area" andthe "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, a nd, since considerable importance wasattached to avoiding mistak es in the enactment(设定制

定) of rites, religious leaders usuallyassumed that task. Wearing m asks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and mimed(模

仿) the desired effect-success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, th e revival of the Sun-as an actor might. Eventually such dramaticre presentations were separated from religious activities.

Another theory traces the theater's origin from the human interest in storytelling. According tothis views tales (about the hunt, war, o r other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first throughthe use of i mpersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumptionof each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theater to thosedances that are primarily rhy

thmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.

英语范文背诵Electricity

The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used toelect ric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hardto imagin e what life would be like without them. When thereis a power failu re, people grope(摸

Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuriesago. Nature has apparently been experim enting in this field for million of years. Scientists arediscovering mo re and more that the living world may hold many interesting secret s ofelectricity that could benefit humanity.

All living cell send out tiny pulses(脉

The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded inan electroencephalo gram. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extre melysmall ? often so small that sensitive instruments are needed t o record them. But in someanimals, certain muscle cells have beco me so specialized as electrical generators that they donot work as muscle cells at all.(但是一些动物它们特定的肌肉细胞已经变得和发电机一样,但是发电机的工作原理和它们完全不一

英语范文背诵The Definition of Price

Prices determine how resources are to be used.(价格决定多少资源被使

The price of any particular product or servic e is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everyt hing seems to depend more or less uponeverything else.

If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to defi ne “price”, many wouldreply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or serviceor, in other words that price is the money values of a product or service as agreed u pon in amarket transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as fa r as it goes. For a completeunderstanding of a price in any particul ar transaction, much more than the amount of moneyinvolved mus

英语范文背诵Schooling and Education

It is commonly believed in United States that school is wherepeopl e go to get an education. Nevertheless(然而,不

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooli ng. Education knows nobounds(教育被认为是没有界限

的). It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or inthe j ob, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the forma l learning that takesplace in schools and the whole universe(整个世界) of informal learning. The agents(代

A chance conversati on witha stranger may lead a person to discover how little is know n of other religions. People areengaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is alifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should bean integral part of one’s entire life.

Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, wh

ose general pattern varieslittle from one setting to the next. Throu ghout a country, children arrive at school atapproximately the sam e time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similartext books, do homework, take exams, and so on. 英语范文背诵The Language of Music

A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, andeveryone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no onecan hear it until i t is performed. Professional singers andplayers have great responsi

bilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A studento f music needs as long and as arduous(艰辛

的) a training to become a performer as amedical student needs t o become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singerspractice breathing every day, as their vocal (声音的) chords(和

音) would be inadequatewithout controlled muscular support. Stri ng players practice moving the fingers of the left handup and dow n, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm—two entire ly differentmovements.

Singers and instruments have to be able to(能够,可

But they have their owndifficulties; the hammers that hit the strin g have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlap ping tone has to sound clear.

This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have tolearn to know every note of the music an

d how it should sound, and they hav

e to aim atcontrolling these so und with fanatical(狂热的) but selfless authority. (with A but B,是A而不是B)

Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowled ge and understanding. Greatartists are those who are so thoroughl y at home in the language of music that they can enjoyperforming works written in any century.

Way back to past centuries, and even today, tribal people engage in dancing as a form of worship or as a part of aceremony in a celebration. On such occasions, dancing can be very solemn. In modern times, dancing appeals to different people for different reasons. Young people often include dancing in parties or at other social gatherings. It seems to be anincentive for them to gather. They look forward to dancing into the night during partieswithout feeling fatigue. To the elderly, the steps in dancing are reduced with a slower tempo in the music. Theygather in community centers to learn folk dance and, at the same time, to know one anotherin such informal interactions. Personally, I doubt the effectiveness of dancing as a major role in keeping one's body healthyand in good shape. Activities such as jogging, swimming and playing games are more effectivefor attaining good health. They can burn off calories in our bodies and develop our muscles. Many times, the obligations are actually fun and fulfilling, and we want to be there. At the same time, we all sometimes experience resistance to meeting these obligations, especially when they pile up all at once and we begin to feel exhausted, longing for nothing so much as a quiet evening at home. At times like these, we may want to say no but feel too guilty at the idea of not being there. Still, our primary obligation is to take care of ourselves, and if saying no to someone else is what we have to do, then we do not need to feel bad about it. There is a skill to balancing our obligations, and it starts with simply becoming aware of our schedule. We may notice that three invitations have arisen in one weekend, and we know that we will pay energetically if we attempt to fulfill all three. At this point, we can take the time to weigh the repercussions of not going to each event, considering how we will feel if we miss it and how our absence might affect other people. Most of the time, it will be clear which obligation we can most easily let go and which one we simply can’t miss. Sometimes we have to miss something really important to us, and that can be painful for everyone concerned. At times like this, reaching out with a phone call, a thoughtful card, or a gift lets people know that you are there in spirit and that your absence is by no means a result of you not caring. Meeting our obligations to others is an important part of being human and not one to take lightly. At the same time, we cannot meet every obligation without neglecting our primary duty to take care of ourselves. We can navigate this quandary by being conscious of what we choose to do and not do and by finding concrete ways to extend our caring when we are not able to be there in person.YouTheme Recreational Activities In the era of information and technology, there are all kinds of recreational activities. Some people think those recreational activities are great and necessary, because they can help people relax from the hard work and study. Some of the activities, such as hiking, jogging, can help people relax physically; while some of them, such as surfing the Internet, can help people relax mentally. However, some people think that so many kinds of recreational activities may have a bad effect on our lives. Some people may not resist some temptations from those activities, and indulge themselves in those activities. At last they are lured away from their study or their work. In my opinion, we should pay more attention to the advantages of various recreational activities and make the most of them. Meanwhile, we should learn how to use those activities positively, and make them a helpful tool for our development. How many big plans are interrupted by bad health! Even a normal life is unimaginable without the guarantee of health. How to keep fit is an eternal topic of diversity and controversy. 2011年6月英语六级范文 1.现在许多人热衷于各类证书考试 2.其目的各不相同 3.在我看来 Certificate Craze The pursuit for certificate is a time-honored phenomenon in the colleges and universities;however, faced with the tough job market, the certificate craze has swept people from all walks of life in recent years. People vary from one another in their purposes for acquiring certificates. Some of them hold that professional certificates are important supplement for their school work because the employer values professional competence, while the school courses lay particular stress on the imparting of knowledge. Besides, diplomas and vocational credentials can effectively enhance the competitiveness of university graduates. Professional certificates will improve the chances of employment, without a doubt. But there is no lack of people, who hold down quite a good job, taking professional certificates to enhance their self-worth. Unfortunately, it has also given rise to some problems never thought of. Confronted with the dilemma, should we carry on the practice? When it comes to this question, people’s views vary from one to another. People who support ranking have their reasons. They are convinced that it can stimulate people, teachers and students alike, to work harder so that they can climb on the ladder or at least maintain their position. In this way, universities can produce more talents and knowledge demanded by our society. Also, supporters of university ranking maintain that it can act as a guide for employers when they decide where to find right employees.. But others may not agree. These people would argue that university ranking might force universities to care more about their position in the ranking but not about research that they are expected to do. For instance, it is often reported that some professors spend more time in bribing than in labs in order to have an edge in the fierce competition. Another good case in point is that some scholars even sacrifice their integrity to plagiarize under the pressure of “publish or perish”. Who is right? Of course both sides have their reasons. As far as I am concerned, we might as well stop the practice for the good of universities and society. Universities are a place for free academic study. Only when scholars are free to in their pursuits, can they make contribution to society. 2010年6月英语六级作文题 Due Attention Should Be Given to the Study of Chinese 1.近年来在学生中出现了忽视中文学习的现象; 2.出现这种现象的原因和后果; 3.我认为…
