America’s first college, Harvard University, is almost universally regarded as our gold standard of higher learning. Students in other parts of the co untry sometimes call their colleges “the Harvard” of this place or that, knowing that no other school could match the old Ivy League institution in the Boston suburb of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Traditionally, only the best of the nation’s high-school graduates are admitted, and a Harvard degree is said to be a sure ticket to a lucrative career.

But proud Harvard is dealing with an embarrassing incident on its record and reputation. It’s a cheating scandal possibly involving as many as 125 students in a government class. It’s the sort of incident that sometimes ruins a less-famous institution - which is precisely what upsets Harvard, its critics, and its alumni.

Dozens of school team athletes have been connected to the cheating episode, involving a take-hom e test last academic year, just when Harvard’s basketball team had become one of the nation’s 25 best, for the first time ever. This has caused much worries in the academic community, which is fearful that Harvard is beginning to mirror the practice at some other schools of cutting corners for prized athletes and admitting some students just because they can throw a football or shoot a basketball.

Two star players who were co-captains of the Crimson basketball team have taken leave from school this season, according to Harvard officials. “Without integrity, there can be no genuine achievement, either at Harvard or anywhere else,” undergraduate dean Jay Harris said in a statement soon after the cheating was discovered.

Familiar reasons for the cheating have been sounded: Stressed students are more interested in scoring good grades than with learning. The easy access to information online makes plagiarism and

cheating easier than ever. Universities no longer stress ethics. And professors who are abosorbed in their research often pay less attention to teaching.

These arguments might ease the embarrassment at some universities. But at 376-year-old Harvard University, they do not.

B. It will ruin Harvard University finally.

53. What does the underlined phrase mirror the practice in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. to practise in front of a mirror

B. to repeat what has been done

C. to cheat in front of a mirror

D. to show others what has been done

54. It can be inferred from what has been said by Jay Harris in Paragraph 4 that _____.

A. Harvard would not put up with the cheating incident.

B. Harvard pays mu ch attention to students’ personal values.

C. Harvard will ask all the students involved to leave school

D. Harvard values students scores and achievements best

SEOUL — South Korea has one of the highest rates of suicide in the developed world. Now the government is trying a new approach to prevent people from taking their own lives.

It only took a single generation for the country to go from a poor nation to one of the world’s top economies. Some observers say this rapid development is leaving many South Koreans feeling lonely and depressed. Kim Hyun-chung, a psychiatrist at the National Medical Center in Seoul, says more than half of her patients have suicidal thoughts.“We’re just growing just too fast and people don’t have time to adjust to it," she explains. "We are an Asian cultural society but now we are more globalized. Its westernized and I don’t think people have had the time to adjust to the big changes.”

The biggest change, Kim says, is family structure. No longer do many generations live under one roof. She says the traditional support systems are disappearing.“More parents are working. I think we’re more focused on earning money than the quality of life.”

She adds that senior citizens make up the largest part of Koreans who take their own lives. But suicide is still a leading cause of death for young adults, high school and even middle school students.

Over the past five years, at least 100 Koreans have leaped off Seoul’s Map Bridge into the Han River. Around half of those jumpers lost their lives. Now Seoul City is trying to turn this suicide spot into what it calls the bridge of life. Along the bridge’s sidewalk are inspirational slogans that say things to make one happy. There are also pictures of babies on the railing and at the center of the bridge is a statue of an old man consoling a young person. Seoul hopes these installments will make people think again before taking the next step.

But psychiatrist Kim Hyun-chung is not so sure how effective these will be. “I think it's just a temporary measure," she notes, "it can’t be the only way to solve this problem. I think it would help,

just to an extent, not too much.” Kim adds that if someone really wants to end their life, there are plenty of other bridges across the Han River.

55. We can learn from the passage that _____.

A.Seoul has the highest suicide rate in the world

B.more old people kill themselves than young ones in South Korea.

C.Seoul’s Map Bridge is the most popular place to commit suicide in South Korea

D.young people don't live with their parents any longer in South Korea.

56. According to Kim Hyun-chung, which of the following might not be the reason for people killing

themselves?

A. Korean traditional family structure has been changed.

B. Korean people live a fast moving life and are stressed.

C. Some Korean people often face the difficulty of losing their jobs.

D. Some Korean people can’t adapt to the change of society.

57. Which of the following measures are taken by Seoul City to prevent people from jumping into the

Han River from Map Bridge?

A.They put up walls along the bridge and a statue in the center

B.They call on people to put up slogans on the railings of the bridge

C.They ask people to think twice before they jump into the river

D.They use pictures, slogans and statues to encourage people to live.

58. The best title of the passage might be _____.

A. Seoul’s Map Bridge Would Change

B. South Korea Facing High Suicide Rate

C. South Korea Tries New Approach to Reduce Suicides

D. Korean People Are Not Happy to Live On

I t’s going to be a busy day at Betsy Ross’s house in Philadelphia on Thursday. She won’t be there, since she died in 1836, but hundreds of tourists will be going through her house.

You see, Thursday is Flag Day in the United States. The unofficial holiday commemorates the adoption of the stars-and-stripes design of the American flag by the Continental Congress 235 years ago, on June 14, 1777. According to lore, the Ross House is the birthplace of the nation’s flag. That’s open to deb ate, but it’s a story that schoolbooks still tell. Betsy Ross was a seamstress, busy sewing cushions for chairs in Philadelphia, which was the focus place of the American revolution against British rule. The Declaration of Independence by the colonists was signed there, and so was the new nation’s Constitution after independence was won.

Widowed when her husband, a member of the local militia, was killed in a gunpowder explosion, Betsy Ross often mended the clothes of the rebels’ leader and future U.S. pres ident, George Washington. According to what some say is history and others a stretch of what really happened, Washington asked Ross to design and sew the new nation’s flag. The story was promoted by Ross’s grandson, who wrote that Betsy Ross had “made with her hands the first flag.”She became a role model for girls - a shining example of women’s contributions to the nation’s history. Most research indicates that Ross did sew the first flag. She’s credited with substituting artful five-point white stars for six-pointed ones in the upper-left blue field. But many other accounts indicate George Washington brought the design to Ross and simply asked her to stitch it together.

In a letter, Washington wrote: “We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our moth er country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her. And the white stripes shall go down to posterity [as] representing liberty.”

59. People would like to go to Ross’s house in Philadelphia to _____.

D. remember her as the creator of the first American flag

60. Which statement is true according to the passage?

A. Betsy Ross was one of the people who signed The Declaration of Independence

B. All are in agreement that Ross designed the first American flag

C. It is almost certain that Ross did sew the first American flag

D. It is George Washington who designed the stars and stripes flag

61. The underlined the word “seamstress” in Paragraph 2 probably means_____.

A. a person who designs flags

B. a person who makes a living by sewing

C. a person who takes part in revolution

D. a person who creates chairs

62. What does the last paragraph imply according to the passage?

A. It implies that the U.S. is independent from Britain

B. It implies that Washington liked Ross’s design of the flag

C. It implies that Washington might be the designer of the flag

D. It implies that Ross did have helped with the design of the flag

D.

Weakness or Strength

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lesson with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was done well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move. "Master," the boy finally said, "shouldn't I be learning more moves?" "This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know," the master replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament. To his surprise, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals. This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the master intervened.

"No," his master insisted, "let him continue."

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and his master reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really in his min.

"Master, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"

"You won for two reasons," the master answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm." The boy's biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

63. Which of the statements is true about the boy?

A. He wanted to learn judo to keep healthy

B. He learned many moves from his master

C. He lost one of his arms in an accident

D. He thought his master didn’t like him

64. What happened during the boy’s first tournament?

A. The referee stopped the matches.

B. The boy won all the matches at last.

C. The boy’s opponents were afraid of him.

D. Th e master didn’t believe the boy could win.

65. The underlined word intervened in Paragraph 3 means _____.

A. became angry

B. shouted loudly

C. began to interfere

D. fought hard

66. The author wrote the passage to _____.

A. tell us that everyone has his own strengths

B. tell us that judo is really not hard to learn well

C. tell us that the boy is a strong-willed champion

D. tell us that we all can win if we try hard enough

The air-conditioner has established itself well in the hearts of Americans. The first widespread use of air-conditioners came during the 1920s when movie theaters used what they called man-made weather to attract customers to the silver screen. The first air-conditioned movie theater in the United States is probably in the Central Park Theater in Chicago, Illinois. Willis Carrier considered the king of cool and the founder of air-conditioning actually sold his inventions to movie theater operators during the late 19th and early 20th. And this was one of the first one to have received it. And they actually had some of the largest audiences than anywhere else in the country as you can imagine. The air-conditioner was called summer blockbusters, because people were trying to get away from the heat during the summer months and they came in and drove to get out of that into the cool air and watched movies . That was probably the only event that allowed them to do that at that time. The theater began to stay open during the summer. Years before they were primarily just open from November to May.

Right after the movie theaters, the government buildings in Washington D.C were air-conditioned, starting with the US House of Representatives building, the Senate building, even the White House and it's funny too, because prior to that, the lawmakers only worked from November to May, and then they dispersed, you know, went home. And it's funny because most people say this may or may not have been a good idea to allow them to work 12 months all over the year.

After World War Two, the cost for air-conditioners started to come down and manufactures advertised them as for the millions not just for millionaires. Air-conditioning became a stable for the Middle Class.

Actually it started in the 1950s when sales exceeded over one million units. And then at each decade, it increased enormously. To where now today, probably 82% of all homes either have room air-conditioning units or central air-conditioning units in America.

A. In the 1950s

B. After World War Two

C. In the 1920s

A. They liked to see new movies in the theaters

D. They loved to meet their favorite movie stars there

69. What does the underlined word dispersed in paragraph 2 mean ?

A. Moved away

B. Stopped immediately

C. Gave up

D. Gathered around
