More and more people read an iPad in bed, reserved as a place for sleep, before they go to sleep.

Charles, a professor from Harvard Medical School and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleeps. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.

When the people read on the iPad as compared to the paper books—they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the

iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.

The researchers conclude in today’s journal article that because of the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and teenagers, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Charles and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note “Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.”

However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (过滤) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.

21. In Charles’ experiment, the group of people were asked to .

A. sit in a row and receive the strict tests

B. have their sleep patterns observed all night

C. read a paper book and an iPad at the same time

D. have their blood tested per hour during the trial.

22. The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to .

A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day

B. fall asleep more easily after reading

C become less energetic the next morning D. have a lot more melatonin secretion

23. The special software recently developed can .

A. remove the blue light from your devices completely

B. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength

C. weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading

D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely

24. Which of the following can be best served as the title of the passage?

A. No e-reading in bed before sleep

B. New software for night e-readers

C. Wrong behaviors before bedtime

D. No games on iPad in bed

I have sometimes heard people refer to reading fantasy novels as escapism. These people believe that magic circumstances distract people from real life and struggles we should be concentrating on overcoming. Although I enjoy reading such books, I used to think so, and that I

was escaping real life while I read, since people said that was what I was doing. Now, I no longer believe that I escape through fantasy. Instead I believe that I am having an experience much more profound.

I have always loved fantasy (especially J. R. R. Tolkien and J. k. Rowling) and read extensively in this genre, but I used to think of this reading as downtime, less important than more “serious”, realistic reading. Over time, I realized that the conversations I was having about these fantasies were deeper and more insightful than those about books set in my time and with similar problems to ray own. I looked up to those heroic characters for inspirations when dealing with new and perplexing questions. Many of these books were shared with my family, and created a sense of belonging and acceptance as we discussed Aslan’s sacrifice and argued over whether or not Frodo was a failure. Even we didn’t agree, these conversations united us through shared thoughts and experience. When I married, my wife, my children and I read Lioyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain on our honeymoon, rejoicing and mourning together through Taran’s Journey from Assistant pig-keeper to High king.

Then I began my graduate studies in Marriage and Family Therapy, and I wanted to enrich others’ lives with this experience I found so personally rewarding. I first assigned a couple to read a fantasy novel, which the couple did read. Just reading the book together, discussing it and wondering together why I had asked them to read it, led to recovery and a renewed romantic relationship. I discovered that the farther from reality the book could take the reader, the more effect it appeared to have. I have been using this technique for years and haven’t yet seen it fail in my practice. As evidence I have many people who have been unified and healed through the reading of these fantasy novels.

25. What did the author use to think of reading fantasy novels.

A. Fantasy reading had a profound effect on the author’s life.

B. Reading fantasy novels made us avoid the problems that we should have overcome.

C. The author just thought highly of reading fantasy novels.

D. Fantasy reading was rewarding and more significant than realistic reading

26. What does the underlined word ‘‘Therapy’’ in the last paragraph mean?

A. Research

B. Healing

C. Check

D. Relationship

27. All the followings belong to the functions of fantasy reading except .

A. Fantasy reading offered inspirations to tackle puzzling questions.

B. Fantasy reading united the family members and created a cozy family atmosphere.

C. Fantasy reading helps to heal.

D. Fantasy reading arouses imagination.

If there is one thing that matters in high school —and for your whole life—it is friendship.

My latest novel, THE UNWKTTTEN RULE, is about a girl, Sarah, who falls for her best friend Brianna’s boyfriend, Ryan, but it’s more about wrestling with feelings for a guy that you know you shouldn’t have. The book sets us thinking about friendship, the kind of lifelong friendship that means the world to you... and what happens when you realize that maybe it isn’t what you think it is. Maybe your best friend isn’t your best friend. Maybe she isn’t even a friend at all.

Friendships are tricky things. You can be sure everything is fine, and that your friendship is going to last forever... and it can just end. No explanation, no anything. And it is not easy. In fact, I think losing a friend is worse than losing a boyfriend, especially when it is a friend you’ve had in your life for a long time.

One of the things that Sarah struggles with in THE UNWRITTEN RULE,beyond her feelings for Ryan, is her friendship with Brianna-how long they’ve been friends, how she understands Brianna in a way no one else does, and what to do when a crack appears in their friendship, not because of Sarah’s feelings for Ryan, but because Sarah begins to wonder if maybe Brianna isn’t her best friend after all. Making a friendship end is unbelievably painful and one of the things I hated when I was younger—and that I still hate now—is how people say, “Oh, it’ll be okay. You’ll move on, you’ll be fine.”

It is true that you will eventually move on and that you will be fine. But you will also always carry that lost friendship with you. It may not take up all of your heart like it does at first, but it will take part of it.

And that, I think, is something no one ever talks about and that I wish we could —and would.

What do you do when someone you are friends with decides your friendship is over? How do

you deal with it?

Maybe my latest novel can provide something for you.

28. From the passage we can infer that .

A. it may take Sarah a long time to recover after she lost Brianna’s friendship

B. Sarah and Brianna are still best friends after a long period of time

C. Sarah does not value Brianna’s friendship at all

D. Ryan would feel puzzled about his real love

29. What do you think the book THE UNWRITTEN TULE is mainly about?

A. friendship.

B. school life.

C. love.

D. wrestling with feelings.

30. What’s the writer’s attitude towards friendship?

A. We will all lose some friends in our life

B. Ending a friendship is worse than losing a boyfriend.

C. It’s usual a crack appears.

D. You will eventually move on after you lose a friendship.

31. What do you think is the best title for the passage above?

A. My Latest Novel.

B. Tricky Friends.

C. Sarah and Brianna.

D. Unforgettable Friendship.

D

The baby monkey is much more developed at birth than the human baby. Almost from the moment it is born, the baby monkey can move around and hold tightly to its mother. During the first few days of its life the baby will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment, particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so, however, the baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attentions on “mother”—the real mother or the mother -substitute (母亲替代相).

During the first two weeks of its life warmth is perhaps the most important psychological thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows, a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes—one covered with cloth and one made of bare wire. If the two artificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother.

However, if the wire model was heated, while the cloth model was cool, for the first two weeks after birth the baby monkeys picked the warm wire mother-substitutes as their favorites. Thereafter they switched and spent most of their time on the more comfortable cloth mother.

Why is cloth preferable to bare wire? Something that the Harlows called contact comfort seems to be the answer, and a most powerful influence it is. Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers’ skins, putting themselves in as close contact with the parent as they can. Whenever the young animal is frightened, disturbed, or annoyed, it typically rushes to its mother and rubs itself against her body. Wire doesn’t “rub” as well as does soft cloth. Prolonged (长时间的) “contact comfort” with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than is either warmth or milk.

According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby’s love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be. It screams in terror and curls up into a furry little ball. If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the baby rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfort, it obviously begins to feel more secure. It then climbs down from the mother-substitute and begins to explore the toys, but often rushes back for a deep embrace (拥抱) as if to make sure that its mother is still there and that all is well. Bit by bit its fears of the new environment arc gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less time holding onto “its mother.”

32. Psychologically, what does the baby monkey desire most during the first two weeks of its life?

A. Contact.

B. Milk.

C. Warmth.

D. Trust.

33. What does the baby monkey probably gain from prolonged “contact comfort”?

A. Attention.

B. Softness.

C. Interest.

D. Confidence.

34. It can be inferred that when the baby monkey feels secure, .

A. it frequently rushes back for a deep embrace when exploring the toys.

B. it cares less about whether its mother is still around.

C. it is less attracted to the toys though they are interesting.

D. it spends more time screaming to get rewards.

35. The main purpose of the passage is to .

A. present the findings of the experiment

B. give the reasons for the experiment

C. introduce the method of the experiment

D. describe the process of the experiment

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Culture means any human behavior that is learned in human society. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning. 36 Culture exists in agricultural as well as industrialized societies.

Culture is necessary for the survival and existence of human beings as human beings. Practically everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural system. 37 Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, the director of a children’s home was told by local villagers that there were “ghosts” in the forest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been living with a pack of wolves in the forest 38 In his diary, the director describes his first view of Kamala (as the older child was named) and Amala (the name given to the younger child): Kamal was a terrible-looking being, the head, a big ball of something covering the shoulders.

39 Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They were very fond of raw meat and raw milk. Gradually, as they got stronger, they began going on all fours, and afterwards began to run on all fours, just like squirrels.

Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior—by taking part in a cultural community. 40

A. From this viewpoint, all human groups have a culture.

B. Close at its heels there came another terrible creature exactly like the first, but smaller in size.

C. Human beings can only develop human abilities by the local people.

D. This statement is well supported by some well-written cases.

E. These children were the ghosts described by the local people.

F. Culture refers only to the high art and classical music of a particular society.

G. They learn a certain human language as well as certain kinds of human behavior through

their membership in a certain cultural community.

Writing:

Dear Andrew,

How nice to hear from you again! I think it is natural for you not to get used to the life there. Here, I have some suggestions for you.

First of all, you should respect the local customs and try to involve yourself in the native lives. Just as a saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Secondly, don’t be afraid to communicate with American students and make friends with them. Friendship will bring you happiness. What’s more, it is better for you to join more outdoor activities with your friends. Those activities may help you relax and have fun, which is of great benefit. Finally, mind your own manners and remain modest and honest when getting along with your friends.

I sincerely hope my advice will help. May you adapt to your new life and enjoy your stay there.

Yours,

Li Hua Dear Andrew,
