The State of Marriage Today

Is there something seriously wrong with marriage today?During the past 50 years, the rateof divorce in the United States has exploded:almost 50%of marriages end in divorce now, andthe evidence suggests it is going to get worse. If this trend continues.it will lead to the breakupof the family, according to a spokesperson for the National Family Association. Some futuristspredict that in l 00 years.the average American will marry at least four times.and extramaritalaffairs will be even more common than they are now.

But what are the reasons for this, and is the picture really so gloomy? The answer to thefirst question is really quite simple:marriage is no longer the necessity it once was.Theinstitution of marriage has been based for years partly on economic need.Women used to beeconomically dependent on their husbands as they usually didn’t have jobs outside the home.Butwith the rising number of women in well—paying jobs, this is no longer the case,so they don’tfeel that they need to stay in a failing marriage.

In answer to the second question, the outlook may not be as pessimistic as it seems.Whilethe rate of divorce has risen, the rate of couples marrying has never actually fallen very much, somarriage is still quite popular. In addition to this.many couples now cohabit and don’t bot her tomarry. These couples are effectively married, but they do not appear in either the marriage ordivorce statistics. In fact.more than 50%Of first marriages survive. The statistics are deceptivebecause there is a higher number of divorces in second and third marriages than in firstmarriages.

So is marriage really an outdated institution? The fact that most people still get marriedindicates that it isn’t.And it is also true that married couples have a healthier life than singlepeople:they suffer less from stress and its consequences, such as heart problems, and marriedmen

generally consider themselves more contented than their single counterparts.Perhaps thekey is to find out what makes a successful marriage and apply it to all of our relationships!

C)Women are not economically dependant any more.

D)Many wives do well-paying jobs outside home now.

3.Why may the outlook of marriage not be as gloomy as it appears?

A)Many people still like to get married.

B)The rate of divorce has actually decreased.

C)Over 50%of the marriages continue to exist.

D)The statistics of divorce is not quite true。

4.How do people usuallyfeel in their marriage life?

A)They are much healthier.

B)They feel no longer single.

C)They are more satisfied.

D)They suffer a lot less.

5.Which of the following about marriage is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A)There will be more relationships outside marriage.

B)Many people try to get married again after divorce.

C)Marriage has long been partly an economical need.

D)It is a fact that most people choose to get married.

B选项与第一段第二句“almost 50%of the marriages end in divorce”不符。第一段第二句里的“the rate of divorce in the United States has exploded”、“the evidence suggests it is goingto get worse”话语正好说明了D选项的情况。

而C选项与第三段里“In fact,more than 50%of first marriages survive”所说不符,该选项没有提到是第一次婚姻。

Excessive Demands on Young People

Being able to multitask is hailed by most people as a welcome skill, but not according to a recent study which claims that young people between the ages of eight and eighteen of the so-called Generation M1 are spending a considerable amount of their time in fruitless efforts as they multitask. It argues that, in fact, these young

people are frittering away as much as half of their time again as they would if they performed the very same tasks one after the other.

Some young people are juggling an ever larger number of electronic devices as they study. At the same time that they are working, young adults are also surfing on the Internet, or sending out emails to their friends, and/or answering the telephone and listening to music on their iPods2

or On another computer. As some new device comes along it too is added to the list rather than replacing one of the existing devices.

Other research has indicated that this multitasking is even affecting the way families themselves function as young people are too wrapped up3in their own isolated worlds to interact with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house nor can they eat at the family table.

All this electronic wizardry is supposedly also seriously affecting young people's performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their perception of the impact of modern gadgets on their performance of tasks, the overwhelming majority of young people gave a favourable response.

The response from the academic and business worlds was not quite as positive. The former feel that multitasking with electronic gadgets by children affects later development of study skills, resulting in a decline in the quality of writing, for example, because of the lack of concentration on task completion. They feel that many undergraduates now urgently need remedial help with study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the workforce need to be taught all over again, as they have become deskilled.

While all this may be true, it must be borne in mind4that more and more is expected of young people nowadays。in fact, too much. Praise rather than criticism is due in respect of5the way today's youth are able to cope despite what the older generation throw at them.

3.be wrapped up in...

4.bear in mind记住

5.in respect of关于,就……而言

练习:

1.According to a recent study, what is probably true about the multitasking Generation M?

A)They are highly commended for being so effective and efficient.

B)They waste more time than they should save, contrary to common assumptions.

C)They should prioritize and focus on the most important tasks on hand.

D)They need to improve their organizational skills SO as to complete all their tasks.

2.With the advent of new gadgets, what will happen to Generation M's present e-devices?

A)They make way for the latest and greatest and are retired by the young people.

B)They are put away temporarily but stay in rotation for their owners to choose from.

C)They become part of the ever increasing collection of novelties.

D)They are either sold or traded so that their owners can update their toys and hobbies.

3.How will multitasking affect Generation M adversely?

A) It makes them feel lonely and pitiful.

B) It makes them aloof and elusive to family and friends.

C) It makes them selfish and possessive.

D) It makes them impolite and ungrateful.

4.What is the biggest problem for multitasking undergraduates in universities?

A) They should adjust their academic attitudes seriously.

B) They should seek psychological professionals for assistance.

C) They should take some crash courses to catch up with their classmates.

D) They should try harder to focus on one task before moving on to the next. 5.In dealing with today's youth, what approach should parents take?

A) Be supportive and understanding.

B) Be realistic and lower their expectations.

C) Be encouraging and let their children stick to their old habits.

D) Be patient and hope everything will work out just fine eventually.

1.B 从第一段第一句话中的"a considerable amount of their time""fruitless efforts''以及该段最后一句话中的"frittering away as much as…"

答案D说他们变得不懂礼貌和不知感恩,均是对第三段最后一句话中的“no longer greet”和“nor can they eat at the family table”的字面理解。

答案C把第五段第一句中的“later development”和“decline in the quality of…”

Spoilt for Choice

Choice, we are given to1 believe, is a right. In daily life, people

have come to expect endless situations about which they are required to make decisions one way or another. In the main2, these are just irksome moments at work which demand some extra energy or brainpower, or during lunch breaks like choosing which type of coffee to order or indeed which coffee shop to go to.

But sometimes selecting one option as opposed to another can have serious or lifelong repercussions. More complex decision-making is then either avoided, postponed, or put into the hands of the army of professionals, lifestyle coaches, lawyers, advisors, and the like, waiting to lighten the emotional burden for a fee2. But for a good many4 people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices, the whole system is merely an illusion, created by companies and advertisers wanting to sell their wares5.

The main impact of endless choice in people's lives is anxiety. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of consumer goods induces a sense of powerlessness, even paralysis, in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away6or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted in order to solve the problem and reduce the unease.Recent surveys in the United Kingdom have shown that a sizeable proportion of electrical goods bought per household are not really needed. The advertisers and the shareholders of the manufacturers are, nonetheless, satisfied.

It is not just their availability that is the problem, but the speed with which new versions of products come on the market. Advances in design and production mean that new items are almost ready by the time that goods hit the shelves7.Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The classic example is computers, which are almost obsolete once they are bought. At first, there were only one or two available from a limited number of manufacturers, but now there are many companies all with not only their own products but different versions of the same machine. This makes selection a problem.Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing8: no choice, no anxiety.

The plethora of choice is. not limited to consumer items. With the greater mobilitv of people around the world, people have more choice about where they want to live and work--a fairly recent phenomenon. In the past, nations migrated across huge swathes of the earth in search of food, adventure, and more hospitable environments. Whole nations crossed continents and changed the face of history. So the mobility of people is nothing new. The creation of nation states and borders9effectively slowed this process down. but what is different now is the speed at which migration is happening.

But even if he hadn’t stopped in time, the woman would have been safe. She isn’t real. Neither is the town. And Coyne isn’t really driving. Coyne is demonstrating a computerized driving simulator that is helping researchers at Old Dominion University3 (ODU) examine how in-vehicle guidance systems affect the person behind the wheel.4 The researchers want to know if such systems, which give audible or written directions, are too distracting — or whether any distractions are offset5 by the benefits drivers get from having help finding their way in unfamiliar locations.6 “We are looking at the performance and mental workload of drivers,” said Caryl Baldwin, the assistant psychology professor lending the research, which involves measuring drivers reaction time and brain activity as they respond to auditory and visual cues7. Better Control of TB Seen If a Faster Cure Is Found The World Health Organization1 estimates that about one-third of all people are infected with bacteria that cause tuberculosis . Most times, the infection remains inactive. But each year about eight million people develop active cases of TB, usually in their lungs. Two million people die of it. The disease has increased with the spread of AIDS and drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis. Current treatments take at least six months. People have to take a combination of several antibiotic drugs daily. But many people stop as soon as they feel better. Doing that can lead to an infection that resists treatment. Public health experts agree that a faster-acting cure for tuberculosis would be more effective. Now a study estimates just how effective it might be. A professor of international health at Harvard University2 led the study. Joshua Salomon says a shorter treatment program would likely mean not just more patients cured. It would also mean fewer infectious patients who can pass on their infection to others. The researchers developed a mathematical model to examine the effects of a two-month treatment plan. They tested the model with current TB conditions in Southeast Asia. The scientists found that a two-month treatment could prevent about twenty percent of new cases. And it might prevent about twenty-five percent of TB deaths. The model shows that these reductions would take place between two thousand twelve and two thousand thirty. That is, if a faster cure is developed and in wide use by two thousand twelve. The World Health Organization reductions the DOTS3 program in nineteen ninety. DOTS is Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course. Health workers watch tuberculosis patients take their daily pills to make sure they continue treatment. Earlier this year, an international partnership of organizations announced a plan to expand the DOTS program. The ten-year plan also aims to finance research into new TB drugs. The four most common drugs used now are more than forty years old. The Global Alliance for TB Drug Development4 says its long-term goal is a treatment that could work in as few as ten doses. 1.

In America, parents tend to encourage their children to develop their potential (潜能) to the fullest extent. Fathers and mothers frequently teach their children both ambition and the confidence necessary to work toward their goals. American parents are always active in concentrating on what their kids can do, not what they can't. As a result, millions of American boys and girls grow up hoping to become actors and athletes, diplomats and doctors. Many of them even want to become president. American parents often encourage their children to become involved in extra activities of all types at school, such as student government, sports and music. They believe that only through taking part in these activities can their children become mature young adults. As we all know, school work is important. But parents should realize that the social skills their children learn from natural conversations with each other are as important as schoolwork and the skills they will need in the future work. What's more important in their work is that their children should have a sound knowledge of physics or the ability to communicate effectively. As a rule, Chinese parents don't educate their children about the same kind of ambition and confidence as Americans do, nor do they encourage the same level of participation in extra activities. Children are typically advised to study hard and pass exams. They have to spend a lot of time in doing much schoolwork every day. It is a great waste of time to do so. Now more and more Chinese parents have recognized that they should pay attention to developing the potential of their children. I hope that leaders in Chinese educational circles should take some measures to develop the potential of their children. I am very confident about it. (1)From the passage, we know the American parents pay much more attention to . A. the social skills than Chinese parents B. their children's studying hard and well C. what their children want but they can't D. extra activities than schoolwork (2)According to the passage, Chinese parents . A. know more than American parents to educate their children B. owning ambition and confidence is necessary and important C. pay much more attention to their children's fine future D. don't encourage their children to participate in extra activities (3)From the passage, we can infer . A. American children are brave and adventurous B. American children are more active in their studies C. Chinese children have the ability to communicate effectively D. something should be done to develop the potential of the children in China (4)What's the writer's attitude towards Chinese education reform?

I watched from a distance as the homeless man quarreled with those who did not leave money for him – the majority. I walked up to him and right on queue he asked me for a quarter. ―I’ll give you a quarter if you tell me your story.‖ He laughed, ―You’ll give me a quarter for my story?‖ I lay the quarter in front of him and corrected myself –―Nah, here’s the quarter but it would be nice to hear your story.‖ I followed his eyes to the quarter and for a brief moment I saw a glimmer of reflection. I sat down next to him and waited. ―I was in the army,‖ he said. ―I was a sniper(狙击手)and was supposed to shoot down the enemy from the distance.‖ I listened carefully to his grizzly voice as he went deeper into the story. He wore dirty old torn clothes and smelled like a dead rat left in a mouse trap. He told me how he used to hunt with his family and was really good at it. He had his own way of respecting animals by not wasting what he killed for food and not killing more than he needed. When the army came knocking on his door, he felt pride and joined up. All those years of polishing his hunting skills could now serve a larger purpose—to defend us from the bad guys. He set out to fight in Iraq. It wasn’t long before he realized his ideals and expectations were just a shadow of the truth. He became disillusioned with the killings, which he felt were of innocent people. ―I was a sniper but I never really killed anyone,‖ he said. ―One day I had to do it. They asked me to shoot this lady from the distance. I saw kids near that lady and my hands were on the trigger (扳机). Man, I was tearing up ... I couldn’t do it. She wasn’t doing anything to anyone and she was with the kids—I couldn’t see through my tears. It just didn’t make any sense to me.‖ The story goes on as he describes eventually being put into prison for 180 days for refusing to follow orders. He told me how he was black listed so that he couldn’t get a job. All the rights we take for granted were taken away from him. Why? Here was a man who was being punished—and for what? For refusing to kill the lady? For being a hero? ―I have no regrets,‖ the homeless man said. ―I may be homeless now, but I never killed that lady. I never killed anyone in the army. It didn’t feel right. I didn’t go there to do that. I went there to save people.‖ He continued, ―I can live with being homeless—that’s okay. But I wouldn’t be able to live with killing innocent people.‖ On that lonely Friday night, I met a hero. It just never occurred to me that a hero could be a smelly old man left on streets. 1. It can be learned from the passage that the homeless man_______. () A. never killed animals B. had a strong respect for life C. deserved the punishment he received D. felt guilty about disobeying the order
