You cannot step twice into the same river; for fresh waters are flowing in upon you. The sun is new everyday.P22

Aristotle p29

Tragedy, then, is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished(润色) with each kind of artistic ornament(装饰) , the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions. By “language embellished”, I mean language into which rhythm, “harmony”, and song enter. By “the several kinds in separate parts”, I mean, that some parts are rendered through the medium of verse alone, others again with the aid of song.

Impact p35

“Why shouldn’t the childhood of human society---the stage at which it attained its most attractive development---exercise an eternal charm, as an age that will never return?”

These studies are an impetus to youth, and a delight to age; they are an adornment to good future(锦上添花), refuge and relief in trouble(雪中送炭);they enrich private and do not hamper(妨碍)public life; they are with us by night, they are with us on long journeys, they are with us in the depths of country.

Poetry p43

Nothing can be created out of nothing.

Matter is eternal.

General introduction p51

Among all the religions by which people seek to worship, Christianity is by far the most influential in the West. Every phase of man’s life is touched by this religion, so much so that it has become part and parcel of Western culture. As is mentioned in the previous division, Judeo-Christian tradition constitutes one of the two major components of European culture. Judaism and Christianity are closely related. In fact, it was the Jewish tradition which gave birth to Christianity. Both originated in Palestine--- the hub(中心) of migration and trade routes, which led to exchange of ideas over wide areas.

The Old Testament p52

The Bible is a collection of religious writings comprising two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The former is about God and the Laws of God; the latter, the doctrine(教义) of Jesus Christ. The word “Testament”means “agreement”--- namely, the agreement between God and Man.

Proverb p66

Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee;

Rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

Rise of Christianity p73

Though it is clear that the early Christians’notion(概念) of divine creation, their concern for god and salvation all stemmed from Hebrew(希伯来人) roots, yet ever since its birth 2000 years ago, Christianity based itself on two forceful beliefs which separate it from all other religions. One is that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that God sent him to earth to live as humans live, suffer as humans suffer, and die to redeem mankind. The other is that God gave his only begotten son, so that whosoever believes in him should not perish(毁坏), but have everlasting life. This Redeemer, Jesus, was at once divine and truly human. Thus, at the heart of Christianity is the life of Jesus: How he lived and died to redeem the whole human race.
