Guinness World Records Set by Kids

◆The youngest club DJ

Oratilwe A J Hongwane likes putting in more efforts when playing music for a crowd. In 2012, he became the youngest club DJ—he was five when he played a one- hour set to 100 people at a bar in South Africa. Known in the business as DJ Arch Jnr, he broke the record previously held by a six-year-old in Japan.

◆The most viewed video game-unboxing video

Kids love watching someone unbox a new purchase—especially if it’s something they can’t get themselves. Maybe that’s why more than 25 million people have watched YouTube HD. What’s really cool about Evan is that he actually donates most of the toys to those in need. He also uses his popular YouTube channel to draw people’s attention to worthy organizations for helping the poor.

◆The youngest drummer

The rules of Guinness World Records say a drummer must record a real song and be paid for his skills and that the drummer must give at least 20 concerts of 45 minutes or longer within five years. At the age of just four Julian Pavone met all those qualifications.

◆The fastest assembly (组装)of 10,000 Lego pieces and the longest Lego chain

A group of school kids in New Jersey went for their world records to increase public awareness about a fellow student who is suffering from a rare and deadly disease. The group put together 10,000 Lego pieces in just three hours, breaking the old one by five hours. They also set the record for the longest Lego chain, which ended up at 947 meters, beating the old record by 40.

Growing pains and gains

It’s not easy to grow up. Actually it’s far from easy. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel trapped, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. When we look back on all the hardships in life with a positive attitude, we realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!

As a young girl my parents forced my sisters and me to do so many things that I never liked. They made me learn

to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music, just because it was what they wanted me to do. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I realize that my parents and teachers were always pushing me along, not because they wanted me to suffer but because they wanted me to succeed in life. They’ve always wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.

Every moment of our lives we are either living or dying, so live life to its fullest! We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just small pains in life. They might seem so huge at the time but we must be strong. Think about how we would feel if we had no fear and live life like that. The future is ours!

A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps(凸块)on our road to success we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!

A项正确。

6. What does the underlined phrase “to its fullest” mean?

A. Directly

B. Completely

C. Carefully

D. Terribly

根据画线词前的“Every moment of our lives we are either living or dying”可知,我们的生活只存在两种状态——生或死,所以我们要充分过好我们的人生,由此可知画线词词义为

“充分地,完全地”,故B项正确。

7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. Growing pains are necessary for us to grow up.

B. We all have to experience growing pains.

For or Against?—That Is the Question

Andy is the most unreasonable and he makes me so angry that I could even scream sometimes! Of course, I sort of have to love him because he is my twin brother. Andy and Amy(that is me)have the same curly hair and dark eyes and are equally stubborn. Yet, on most issues we usually take opposite positions.

Just this week in our school, there was a heated discussion on whether to adopt a school dress code. Every student would be required to wear a uniform. The teachers are divided: Some are in favor of the uniforms while others are opposed. The principal has asked the students to express their opinions by voting on the issue before decisions are made. But she will have the final word on the dress code.

I think a dress code is a good idea. The reason is simple. The less I have to decide first thing in the morning, the better. I can’t tell you how many mornings I look into my closet and just st are, unable to decide what to wear.

Andy is shocked at my opinion. Last night, he even dragged out my parents’ high school photo albums to show me how brilliant they looked without uniforms! He also declared, "Bruce Springsteen never wore a school uniform. Bob Dylan wouldn’t have been caught dead in a school uniform! Besides, when I am feeling political, I want to be able to wear clothes made of natural, undyed fibers, sewn or assembled in countries that do not pollute the environment or exploit child labor. If I have to wear a uniform, I won’t feel like me!"

To that I replied, “So your personal heroes didn’t wear school uniforms. But they went to high school about a million years ago! I feel sorry for you since I had no idea that your ego(自我)is so fragile that it would be completely destroyed by a uniform.”That really made him angry and he shouted, “You’re just copying what you hear that new music teacher saying because you are crazy about him!”

Fortunately, the bell rang before we could do each other physical harm, and we went to our separate classes. The vote for or against uniforms took place later that day. The results of the vote and the principal’s decision will be

announced next week. I wonder what it will be. I know how I voted, and I’m pretty sure I know how Andy voted. How would you vote—for or against?

8. Amy and Andy often get angry with each other because _______.

A. they’re both stubborn

B. they like different teachers

C. they always hold different views

D. they don’t like each other very much

由第一段中的“Yet, on most issues we usually take opposite positions.”(然而,在大多数问题上,我们通常采取相反的立场。)

由第三段中的“The less I have to decide first thing in the morning, the better. I can’t tell you how many mornings I look into my closet and just stare, unable to decide what to wear.”(我早上第

10. Who will decide whether the students should wear uniforms?

A. The principal

B. Their parents

C. Their teachers

D. Students themselves

【答案】A

由第二段中的“The principal has asked the students to express their opinions by voting on the issue before decisions are made. But she will have the final word on the dress code.”(校长要求学

故选A项。

11. In Paragraph 5, Amy aims to say that _______.

A. Andy shouldn’t look up to his heroes so muc h

B. our clothes should decide people’s attitudes towards us

C. Andy’s lack of self-confidence is reflected in his clothing

D

Even in the best and most loving of times, families can feel impossibly confined(受限制的). Teens are irritable and furious. Parents are annoying and embarrassing. For Esther and her daughter Chaya, the tiny new coronavirus changed all that.

Esther was born in Wuhan-a dynamic and culturally rich place that she deeply loves but moved to the U.S. During th e winter holiday, they went to Wuhan to visit Esther’s parents. Gradually at first, then more frequently, they noticed face masks on city streets. To be safe, they wore their own masks and stopped going to public gatherings. Then, suddenly the city was on lockdown. No one could leave. Their reservations home on a China Southern airlines flight were worthless. “I feared for my daughter’s life,” said Esther, “If it got worse, there could be chaos. She doesn’t speak much Chinese.”

For days, Esther repeatedly called and emailed for help. It was nonstop. She stayed online, checking all the time. Chaya felt distressed and helpless. It’s awful seeing her mother go through that-without having anything she could do to help in the hotel.

Their luck changed with one email. For the 1,000 Americans stuck in Wuhan, there were 230 available seats on one outbound flight, it said. Esther bought two $1,100 seats. After a 12-hour wait at the airport, they got clearance to leave, and arrived at March Air Force Base, where they were isolated in two small connected rooms with a shared bath for two weeks. There were daily medical checkups, twice daily temperature checks and a 10 a m. briefing (简报). But there was no WiFi, TV or friends. For emotional support, Esther phoned her husband Haim, an engineering manager for Uber, and their two other children, ages 13 and 11.

Now home, they are basking in(沉浸于)the thrill of phone calls, TV interviews and a caring community. They’ve gotten little sleep. Suitcases remain unpacked. But anyhow, th ey have survived not just the outbreak of a virus but the unforgettable experience of mother-daughter togetherness.

A. The culture and vitality of Wuhan have attracted Esther and Chaya there.

B. The virus has affected people’s life in Wuhan.

C. The flight of going back to the U.S. has been postponed.

D. The city was locked down because it was in chaos.

根据“During the winter holiday, they went to Wuhan to visit Esther’s parents.”可知,吸引他们到武汉来的原因是要看望Esther的父母,所以选项A错,排除A;根据“To be safe, they wore

their own masks and stopped going to public gatherings. Then, suddenly the city was on lockdown. No

one could leave.”

13. What caused Chaya’s depressed mood?

A. Seeing her mother suffer from reaching out for help.

B. Being kept in Wuhan for poor health.

C. Missing her family and friends at home.

D. Being unable to speak Chinese.

【答案】A

根据“Chaya felt distressed and helpless. It’s awful seeing her mother go through that-without having anything she could do to help in the hotel.”

故选A。

14. Why were they isolated after Esther and Chaya arrived at the airport?

A. The concern of their safety as well as the public’s.

B. Their infection of the virus.

C. The lack of flight home.

D. Their emotional problems after the experience.

【答案】A

There were daily medical checkups, twice daily temperature checks and a 10 a m.

15. What is the best title of the text?

A. Life in Wuhan: fighting the virus together.

B. Life about people infected by the virus.

C. Life about a mom and teen united by a virus.

D. Life about a mom and daughter from the U.S.

根据最后一段的主旨句“But anyhow, they have survived not just the outbreak of a virus but the unforgettable experience of mother-daughter togetherness.”

Going to a boarding school is a new experience full of excitement of the unknown. Socialization is a big thing for students and it is common to feel a little uncomfortable going into a situation where everyone is a stranger. You may probably miss your friends from former school. Trying actively to find new friends can help ease the feeling of being lonely. A boarding school is a great chance to make new lifelong friends. The question is: How?

1

You may find you have lots of things in common with your roommate, but even if you are completely different from each other, with a little effort and understanding, the two of you may become best friends.

2

If you leave your door open, this shows that you welcome visitors. As a result, people will naturally stop in and say hello. Closed doors are not likely to bring many visitors and those who stay locked up in their rooms may give others the impression of being cold. Other students will be less likely to stop in and build a new friendship.

3

Getting involved in organized socialization is a great way to meet new people. It also helps you get more familiar with the campus. By staying active in school groups such as clubs and organizations, you can meet lots of people with whom you share common interests.

4

Get to know your classmates as you’ll be spending several months with them. Starting conversations in class is a great way to meet people who are interested in the same kind of studies as you are. Short friendly discussions can build lifelong friendship.

5

If you’re athletic, trying out for a sport will do for you the same thing as joining a club will do. You will instantly meet a large group of people who share your interest in sports.

Boys and girls:

We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can get rid of them correctly and wisely.

____________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________

That’s all. Thank you.

Boys and girls:

We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can get rid of them correctly and wisely.

First, some of us are upset about their body styles and looks, but I think w e needn’t care about it. After all, it is one’s inner beauty that matters. Second, we sometimes seem to be misunderstood by our teachers or classmates. Faced with this, we can find a proper time to have a heart-to-heart talk with them, trying to remove the misunderstanding. Third, some of us often quarrel with our parents because of the generation gap between us. It is necessary for us to communicate with our parents after school, helping them understand us better. Last of all, we may fall behind others, which makes us stressed. Actually we can encourage ourselves to work efficiently, full of determination.

That’s all. Thank you.

Growing up on a small farm, I lived a life that I took for granted. My father worked in the city as a plumber(水暖工).He was not highly educated, but he was smart, looking at problems in an engineer’s way. He was a man made of leather, brass and chewing tobacco who tried to teach my brother and me useful things, including respect. He also had a temper and was strict with us for he would scold us when we made some careless mistakes. Sometimes, my father seemed like a distant enemy to me and I didn’t like him very much.

One day I came home from primary school and his car was already there. Once inside, I was told by my mother that he didn’t feel well. His back hurt. My father never missed work; in fact, when he came home, he went to the barn to work even more. I remember looking at him secretly around the corner as he lay on his bed in the middle of the day.

Later, my mother told me he got multiple myeloma(多发性骨髓瘤),a type of cancer. As the cancer grows, the person will shrink because the disease destroy s the body’s energy and the abnormal antibodies cause problems for other cells and tissue. Bones eventually look like Swiss cheese, and when they break, they may never heal. But I didn’t realize that my father’s time was rather limited and just treated him the same way I used to.

For the last year of my fathers life, his entire day consisted df rising from his hospital bed in the living room and

walking to his chair to sit and think. He was predictably in that chair when I came home one day during the ninth grade. I do not remember where my mother and brother were, but the two of us were alone.

Paragraph 1 :

He asked me to sit down and what he told me still moves me these decades Later.

____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2 :

At that moment, I realized that he was doing more than telling.

____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 1 :

He asked me to sit down and what he told me still moves me these decades later. Lying on the hospital bed, he told me about his life on the farm, his family, his loves, and his heartbreaks. Although he was tortured by the cancer, his inner self rushed out to me in a great flood as if a pipe had burst all of a sudden. He had been speaking for maybe an hour or more and mentioned that he actually felt regretful about being so strict with us.

Paragraph 2 :

At that moment, I realized that he was doing more than telling. He was asking to be forgiven. All it took was to understand that was what he needed, and I forgave everything, immediately. The thought of my father being an enemy disappeared, with tears rolling down on my face. I held my father’s hands tightly, enjoying this deep but quiet love. Although he has gone for a long time, I still always remember that moment and the realization that I love him.

A Suddenly another thought went through Kate’s mind like an electric shock. An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. There was no one else. In wind and rain, she started on her difficult was. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream. At last -she never knew how long it had taken her – she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately, the station-master was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early. 21. What did Kate decide to do? A. Stop the express train. B. Check the signal light. C. Meet the passengers. D. Visit the station-master. 22. Which of the following words best describes Kate’s journey? A. Fruitless. B. Boring. C. Well-planned. D. Ricky. 23. Why did the station-master turn pale? A. He suddenly fell ill. B. He realized the danger. C. He discovered his mistake. D. He became over-excited. B The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is offering a free meal to man guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bile linked to a generator(发电机). The idea is to get people fit and reduce their carbon footprint. Guest will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity – roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meal tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. The bicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel. The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guest staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokeswoman, said, “Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but generally I don’t think people will take advantage of our programme.” Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition an 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website https://www.360docs.net/doc/b61719678.html, recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as symbol of the hotel’s green profile(形象).” If successful, the electric bicycle meal programme will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement. 24. What is the main purpose of the free meal programme? A. To promote the hotel’s green concept. B. To make the city known to the world. C. To attract people to the hotel restaurant. D. To get guests to stay longer at the hotel. 25. How can a participant get a free meal? A. By becoming a professional cyclist. B. By cycling to produce some electricity.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is no thing fixed about attitudes to dirt. In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block o ut disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up t he skin and let ills in. A particular danger was though to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 15 46. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a frie ndly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman h ad taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman sho uld not go out. Though the belief in the merit (好处) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been re garded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18 century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning awa y dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of pre venting disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter th an white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too f ar? Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of diseas e. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages ch ildren to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter (后者) positi on is gaining some ground. (原创范文,仅供参考) One possible version: People have mixed opinions towards dirt on our skin.

Be a story; Beyond a story.

However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt. In the early 16th cen tury, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opi nion had it that washi ng off dirt with hot water could ope n up the ski n and let ills in. A particular dan ger was though to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French ki ng had closed the bath houses in his kin gdom. So did the king of En gla nd in 1546. Thus bega n a long time whe n the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a frien dly way. Henry IV, Ki ng of Fra nee, was famously dirty.

1. Three friends and I was driving on a highway. While we were going at least 50 miles per hour, we passed over a car. It had broken down, stopped on the side of the road. My friend slows down, and pulled behind the other car. He got out of the car immediate and before I knew it he was helping the other person push the car down the road to a spot where wasn’t so close to the passing cars. From the way they were pushing the car, it looked as if my friend was pushing them all by himself. I thought my friend help a complete stranger like this was a great thing, but I won’t forget his good nature or character. 2. Dear Brad, I’m very glad to hear from you. In your last letter you ask about the post-80s in China. Actually I am the boy who belongs to this group. Comparing with our parents, life for us is getting much hard. The job market is tough and the house is expensively to afford. Now many girls prefer to marry with a man who owns a house and a car. Therefore, I don’t think love built on house and cars is true love, and I doubt how long it will last. As a matter of fact, though situations are tough today, a lot of we post-80s are making great efforts live a good life. I believe we will have a nice future. Li Hua 3. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, Some of us are having problems about our parents, as they often look into our school bags or read our diaries. I fully understand why we are comfortable about it, but it is no need to feel too sadly. Our parents are checking in our bags or diaries to make sure we’re not getting into troubles. They have probably heard of some horrible stories about other kids and thinking we might do the same. Or perhaps they just want to connect with us and are doing it all wrong. My suggestion is: Tell them we want them to trust us as many as we’d like to trust them. If you don’t think you can talk to them, write them a letter and leave it lie around --- they are bound to read it. Thank you!
