The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With

the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphone, writing by hand has become

something of nostalgic (怀旧的>skill. However, while

today ’ s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting

skills are still necessary for students to be

successful---both in school and in life.XNHY6ASZxX Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says

it ’ s important to continue teaching handwriting and

help children acquire the skill of writing by

hand.XNHY6ASZxX

Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study

that looked at the ability of students to complete

various writing tasks---both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote

longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.XNHY6ASZxX

In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what

role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to

know well they can write.“ Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It

is allowing our written language to connect with

ideas. ” Berninger said.XNHY6ASZxX

Spelling helps students translate ideas into words

in their mind first and then to transcribe(转换>“those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen, ” the study said. Seeing the words

in the “ mind’ s eye ” helps children not only to turn

their ideas into words, says Berninger, but

also to spot( 发现 > spelling mistakes when they write

the words down and to correct then over

time.XNHY6ASZxX

“ In our computer age, some people believe that we

don’ t have to teach spelling because we have spell

checks, ” she said.“ But until a child has a

functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade

level, they won’ t have the knowledge to choose the

correct spelling among the options given by the

computer. ”XNHY6ASZxX

46. What makes writing by hand a thing of the

past?XNHY6ASZxX

A. The absence of blackboard in classroom.

B. The use of new technologies in teaching.XNHY6ASZxX

C. The lack of practice in handwriting.

D. The popular use of smartphones.XNHY6ASZxX

47.Berninger ’ s study published in 2009

___________.XNHY6ASZxX

A.focused on the difference between writing

by hand and on a computer.XNHY6ASZxX

B.indicated that students prefer to write with a

pen and paper.XNHY6ASZxX

C.found that good essays are made up of

long sentences.XNHY6ASZxX

D.discussed the importance of writing speed.

48.Which of the following best shows the role

of spelling?XNHY6ASZxX

A. Spelling improves one’ s memory of words.

B. Spelling ability is closely related to writing

ability.XNHY6ASZxX

C. Spelling benefits the translation from

words into ideas.XNHY6ASZxX

D. Spelling slows down finding exact words

D I read somewhere that we spend a full third of our lives waiting. But where are we doing a ll of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours? To understand the iss ue, let?s take a look at three types of “waits”. The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most anno ying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink (洗碗池) as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it?s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wan ders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of w ait makes the waiter helpless and mindless. A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of discipline. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup requires a Forced Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer three minutes, remove from heat, let stand fi ve minutes.” I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After a ll, Forced Waiting requires patience. Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is u nusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen. Turning one?s life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optim ists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn?t co me to rely on it, wishing for a few good things to happen never hurts anybody. We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you?rstanding at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you?ll have to eat until a large bag of c ash falls out of the sky, don?t be desperate. You?re probably just as busy as the next guy.

There has been a recent trend in the food service industry toward lower fat content and less salt. This trend, which was started by the medical community(医学界)61 a method of fighting heart disease, has had some unintended side 62(effect) such as overweight and heart disease—the very thing the medical community was trying to fight. Fat and salt are very important parts of a diet. They are required 63(process) the food that we eat, to recover from injury and for several other bodily functions. When fat and salt 64 (remove) from food, the food tastes as if it is missing something. As 65 result, people will eat more food to try to make up for that something missing. Even 66 (bad), the amount of fast food that people eat goes up. Fast food 67(be) full of fat and salt; by 68 (eat) more fast food people will get more salt and fat than they need in their diet. Having enough fat and salt in your meals will reduce the urge to snack(吃点心) between meals and will improve the taste of your food. However, be 69 (care) not to go to extremes. Like anything, it is possible to have too much of both, 70 is not good for the health. 根据固定短语be required to do sth.“被要求做某事”可知此处答案填to process。
