Zambia is a country in southern Africa. More than half of the population is very poor, and companies pay people very little money for their work. One woman named Sylvia Banda had a

dream to become a successful businesswoman and build her own brand (品牌). So, after finishing high school, Banda went to college to learn how to start a food company. She studied hard and spent her free time coming up with ways to make money, including making food and selling it to friends.

In 1987, when Banda was 24 years old, she decided to start her own restaurant. She borrowed a room and used food, and pans from her own kitchen. The first day, her restaurant did not have any chairs or tables, but she was able to sell all of the food that she had made. After counting the money, she was surprised that she had made more in one day than most people make in one month.

From that small restaurant, Banda built a large company called the Sylva Group. It now has hundreds of people working for it and is worth over a million dollars. Besides restaurants, the company has now built hotels and a college in Zambia, and it also sells many kinds of packaged foods. After reaching her goal of starting her own business and becoming rich, Banda decided to work to improve the lives of other Zambians.

She does this in a number of ways. For one, her restaurants use vegetables and other products made in Zambia, and by doing so, Banda can support the farmers. Interesting Greeting Customs in Different Countries

To build a good relationship with foreigners, you should know the customs of the country you visit. This passage will help you earn the trust of the natives.

Japan

Japanese people follow both customs of shaking hands and bowing when greeting. You need to respond as the host does, either by bowing or shaking hands. This is different from the Ukrainian style of greeting. There, you should be ready to present your right cheek, on which three kisses will be planted by the natives, along with a hug.

China

Chinese people accept the western handshake, but with a lighter grip (握). Looking straight into the eyes while greeting is considered rude in China; it is better to receive the greeting with lowered eyes as a mark of respect. Moreover, in Chinese culture a new friend is greeted with applause. It is interesting that Tibetans show their tongue to people as a gesture of politeness. This means they have no ill thoughts about them.

The Arabic World

In some Arabic countries, speaking to the women is not allowed for a foreigner, let alone any other body contact. Men may greet each other with a hug and kiss on both cheeks, followed by a lasting handshake. As a non-Arabic woman, you must wait for the Arabic men to offer their hand to shake, as it is not common in Arabia to shake hands with women.

Russia

Russians prefer a firm handshake followed by a bear hug, especially to a known acquaintance. Even kissing the cheeks of both men and women are popular, but only for Russian men. Similarly in Europe and Latin America, kissing the cheeks is also a popular custom. But for Latin Americans, kissing the top of a lady’s hand after a soft handshake is more popular. Don’t

take the hand before the complete handshake is done, as this will be taken as a rejection.

28. When you visit a Japanese female friend, you should ______.

A. kiss her on her right cheek

B. bow to her if she does this to you

C. shake her hand before she greets you

D. avoid having any body contact with her

Some people believe that international sports creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others argue that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both opinions, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by some unfortunate incidents happening in minor national contests.

One country received its silver medals with great anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match since the loser refused the final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’(对手)victory was unfair. Their manager was angry when he said: “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey

and the international Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that behavior could result in the suspension(暂停) of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a doubtful end to their contest. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time that the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury(申诉仲裁) debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national terms, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism(激进的爱国主义).

32. According to the author, recent Olympic Games have __________.

A.showed little international friendship B.greatly encouraged international brotherhood C.created goodwill between the nations D.created only misunderstanding and hatred 33. What did the manager mean by saying, “Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished”?

A. His team would no longer take part in international games.

B. Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions

C. There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation

D. The Federation should be canceled

34. The basketball example suggested that __________.

A. too much patriotism was shown in the incident

B. the announcement to restart the match for three more seconds was wrong

C. the appeal jury was too bad at making the decision

D. the American team deserved to get the silver medals.

35. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

A. Sports should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.

B. Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.

C. The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.

D. International contests are unfair for misunderstanding between nations.

But I also want you to understand that realizing your dreams comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing. Here are some words of wisdom for you as you make your way in the world, from an entrepreneur (企业家) and from your mama. 1. Be open-minded to changing your path along the way In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington,DC. There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national health-care nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag (储奶袋) business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own. I'm not a politician! 2. Failure is critical to your success Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has absolutely made me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time. I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes. Love, Your mom 21. In the writer’s opinion, what does it take to realize one’s dream? A. Failure, hard work and good timing. B.
