A sick little gift is being kept alive thanks to her best friend--a dog who carries her oxygen tank on his back. Alida’s faithful dog panion Mr Gibbs has been specially trained to shepherd the three-year-old, who breathes through a tube most of the time. He follows her closely as she plays in her family’s ten-acre land in Louisville, uses the slide or even rides her bike.

As parents they wanted to do something to help their daughter survive despite having a tube following her all the time. The couple found out about “service dogs” from a TV program and realized an animal trained to help the blind could be trained to help Alida. They finally found help in the shape of golden doodle—a retriever crossed with a poodle-dog Mr Gibbs. The Peales were a famous family of American artists. Charles Willson Peale is best remembered for his portraits of leading figures of the American Revolution. He painted portraits of Franklin and Jefferson and over a dozen of George Washington. His life-size portrait of his sons Raphaelle and Titian was so realistic that George Washington reportedly once tipped his hat to the figures in the picture.

Charles Willson Peale gave up painting in his middle age and devoted his life to the Peale museum, which he founded in Philadelphia. The world’s first popular museum of art and natural science mainly covered paintings by Peale and his family as well as displays of animals in their natural settings. Peale found the animals himself and found a method to make the exhibits more lifelike. The museum’s most popular display was the skeleton (骷髅) of a huge, extinct elephant, which Peale unearthed on a New York farm in 1801.

Three of Peale’s seventeen children were also famous artists. Paphaelle Peale often painted still lives of flowers, fruit, and cheese. His brother Rembrandt studied under his father and painted portraits of many noted people, including one of George Washington. Another brother, Rubens Peale, painted mostly landscapes and portraits.

James Peale, the brother of Charles Willson Peale, specialized in miniatures(小画像). His daughter Sarah Miriam Peale was probably the first professional female portrait painter in America.

What’s your dream vacation? Watching wildlife in Kenya? Boating down the Amazon? Sunbathing in Malaysia? New chances are opening up all the time to explore the world. So we visit travel agents, pare packages and prices, and pay our money.

We know what our vacation costs us.But do we know what it might cost someone else? It’s true that many poorer countries now depend on tourism for foreign ine.Unfortunately, though, tourism often harms the local people more than it helps them.

It might cost their homes and lands. In Myanmar,5200 people were forced to leave their homes among the pagodas in Bagan so that tourists could visit the pagodas.

Tourism might also cost the local people their livelihood and dignity. Local workers often find only menial jobs in the tourist industry. And most of the profits do not help the local economy. In stead, profits return to the tour operations in wealthier countries,When the Maasai people in Tanzania were driven from their lands, some moved to city slums.Others now make a little money selling souvenirs or posing for photos.

Problems like these were observed more than 20 years ago.But now some

non-government organizations, tour operations an local governments are working together to begin correcting them.Tourists, too, are putting on the pressure.

The result is responsible tourism or “ethical tourism.” Ethical tourism has people at its heart.New international agreements and cultures. The beginnings are small, though, and the problems are plex.

But take heart. The good news is that everyone, including us,can play a part to help the local people in the places we visit.Tour operations and panies can help by making sure that local people work in good conditions and earn reasonable wages.

They can make it a point to use only locally owned hotel, restaurants and guide services. They can share profits fairly to help the local economy. And they can involve the local people in planning and managing tourism.

What can tourist do?First,we can ask tour panies to provide information about the conditions of local citizens. We can then, make our choice and tell them why.And while we ’re abroad,we can:

Buy local foods and products, not imported ones.

Pay a fair price for goods and services and not bargain for the cheapest price.

Avoid flaunting wealth.

Ask before taking photographs of people.

They are not just part of the landscape.

Let’s enjoy our vacation and make sure others do, too.

32.What is probably the best title for the article?

A. Tourism Causes Bad Effects

B.Tourism Calls for Good Behavior

C.Vacations Bring a lot of fun

D.Vacations cost more than you think

33.Which of the following is not mentioned?

A.Local people were well paid to leave their lands.

B.Tourists may stay in hotels opened by local people.

C.Local people are mainly provided with low-paying work.

D.Tourists could bargain with local people for a reasonable price.

34.The underlined phrase “take heart”means”________”.

A.pay attention

B.take care

C.cheer up

D.calm down

35.According to the passage, the writer thinks ________.

A.tourism is not a promising industry

B.Dream vacations should be spent abroad

C.The problems caused by tourism are easy to settle

D.Tourists should respect local customs and culture

第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳答案。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Seven secrets to a great life

A great life doesn't happen by accident. A great life is the result of allocating your time, energy, thoughts, and hard work towards what you want your life to be. Stop setting yourself up for stress and failure, and start setting up your life to support success and ease. A great life is the result of using what you get in a creative and thoughtful way, instead of just what es next. 36 .

S—Simplify. A great life is the result of simplifying your life. People often misinterpret(曲解,误解)what simplify means. It's not a way to remove work from your life. 37 . In order to create a great life, you will have to make room for it in yours first. E—Effort. A great life is the result of your best effort. Creating a great life requires that you make some adjustments. It may mean re-evaluating how you spend your time, or choosing to spend your money in a different way. It may mean looking for new ways to spend your energy that coincide with your particular definition of a great life. Life will reward your best effort.C—Create priorities. A great life is the result of creating priorities. It's easy to spend your days just responding to the next thing that gets your attention, instead of intentionally using the time, energy and money you have in a way that's important to you. 38 . R—Reserves. 39 . With reserves, you acquire far more than you need—not 6 months living expenses, but 5 years worth; not 15 minutes of free time, 1 day. Reserves are important because they reduce the fear of consequences, and that allows you to make decisions based on what you really want instead of what the fear decides for you.

E—Eliminate distractions. A great life is the result of eliminating distractions. Up to 75% of your mental energy can be tied up in things that are draining and distracting you. Eliminating distractions can be a difficult concept to many people, since they haven't really considered that there is another way to live. Look around at someone's life you admire. What do they do that you would like to incorporate into your own life? Ask them how they did it. Find ways to free up your mental energy for things that are more important to you.

T—Thoughts. 40 . Your belief in the oute will directly dictate how successful you are. Motivated people have specific goals and look for ways to achieve them. Believing there is a solution to the same old problems you encounter year after year is vitally important to creating a life that you love. S—Start. A great life is the result of starting. There's the old saying everyone's familiar with "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." In order to even move from the couch to the refrigerator, you have to start. There's no better time to start than today.

Don't wait for a raise, or until the kids get older, or the weather is better. Today, right now, is the right day to start to take a step in the direction of your heart's desires. It's what you do TODAY that will make a difference in your life tomorrow.

A.When you focus on simplifying your life, you free up energy and time for the work that

you enjoy and the prpose for which you are here.

B. A great life is the result of having reserves—reserves of things, time, space, eergy and

money.

C.Today, right now, is the right day to start to take a step in the direction of your heart’s

disires.

D.Up to 75% od your mental energy can be tied up in things that stop you concentrating.

E.Now please use “secrets” to fit your own needs and style, and start creating your own

great life today.

F. A great life is the result of controlling your thoughts so that you accept and allow for the

possibility that it actually can happen to you!

G.Focus on removing the obstacles that get in the way of you making sure you are honoring

your priorities.
