River City Marketplace

River City Marketplace located in Jacksonville is the largest shopping mall in the city with 70 shops including such stores as Lowes, Wal-Mart Super Center, Pet Smart and Old Navy. When I was 19 years old, I was at a dance club. As we were walking to my car one cold night, a man walked up to us. Behind him was a woman carrying a small child. The child had a jacket on but it wasn’t buttoned up（扣上）. The man began to tell us he wanted to borrow some money for the night to get his wife and kid into a hotel. He had a job but no place to live in and was waiting for he first paycheck. He said he could get our mailing address and mail the money back.

The guy I was with reached into his pocket to give this man a $20 bill. As the other man was extending his hand out to take the money, I put my hand on my new friends’ hand and said, “ Can I talk to you for a minute？”

I told him that every day people asked my mother for money on her way to work.

She said they made more money than she did, simply begging for money. These people were scamming those with soft hearts. And if they were truly worried about their child suffering from the cold, they would have at least buttoned his jacket or covered him with his blanket.

My new friend looked at me with disappointment and said, “Michelle, I know there are people out there that take advantage of others. I also know there are people out there that are one paycheck away from being homeless. If I give $ 20 to 10 people and only one of them really needs it and uses it for the right thing, it is worth it.”

I am now 37 years old and have never forgotten what he said to me. I don’t even remember his name. But I do remember that that experience changed the way I look at different situations.

Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website https://www.360docs.net/doc/bc15520484.html, turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.

Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.

Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”

Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.

People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossing to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.

BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual(虚拟). The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-five countries.

There is a new kind of glasses that permits people considered legally blind (弱视）to see again. The company eSight invented them. A camera is set in the middle of the glasses; it catches video pictures of whatever is before it. The computer in the glasses immediately deals with the video and shows it on two screens in front of the users` eyes. The video is improved by the glasses` technology so that the user is able to see the picture.

The glasses themselves also focus(聚焦)very quickly between short, middle and long distance vision(视力). This makes the user move easily from reading a book，to watching TV or to looking out of a window.

Jeffrey Fenton says users of the glasses can see things almost as if their eyes were g ood. “The glasses are almost bombarding the eyes with so much information to send to the brain through the eyes that they can present them “with a picture that is pretty much what you would see or I would see.”

The eSight glasses are expensive. But, user Julissa Marquez says the cost was worth it. Marquez lost most of her eyesight from an attack in 2013.
