As the novel coronavirus rapidly spreading to about 70 nations, many countries are canceling their major sporting and cultural events.

Already, major domestic (国内的) events in China, including the National People's Congress and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, have already been postponed (推迟). Now the rest of the world seems to be following suit.

The world of soccer is also being affected. In Italy, several matches in February were played behind closed doors (without spectators). Meanwhile, entire soccer leagues in Japan, South Korea, and China's Super League have all been placed on hold (暂停). There is also the possibility that Euro 2020 –an international soccer tournament for European teams – could be cancelled. When asked about the cancellations, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, "The health of persons

is much more important than any football game. If games have to be postponed, then we have to go through that."

The outbreak is also impacting cultural events around the world. Facing

Europe's largest COVID-19 epidemic, with over 2,000 confirmed cases (确诊病例) so

far, Italy also cut short its iconic Venice carnival (狂欢节) and Milan Fashion Week

show. The latter was being live-streamed from an empty theater.

Now, the biggest event in doubt is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Held every

four years, the event attracts hundreds of thousands of people and has not been

postponed since 1944 –due to World War II. Set to begin on July 24, Japanese officials

remain optimistic. In a press conference, Toshiro Muto, Tokyo 2020 CEO said, both

the Olympics and Paralympics (残奥会) will go ahead as planned. He added, "The

situation of the coronavirus infection is difficult to predict, but we will take

measures [so] that we'll have a safe Olympic Games."

Speaking to the Washington Post about the Games, infectious (传染的) disease

researcher Yvonne Maldonado said, "You bring many people together, and then you ship

them back all over the world: That's the perfect way to transmit. If you want to

disseminate (传播) a disease, that would be the way to do it."

On Feb 26, the World Health Organization said the virus was spreading faster

outside China than inside for the first time, prompting (敦促) many countries to follow

China's strict isolation measures.

My best friends gave me a present in a box on my birthday. It was a little heavy, which made me very curiously. So I intended to open it at once but she prevented me do so. She said I mustn't open it until I went back home but gave me a naughty smile. Although there is a strong desire in my mind to know that was inside the box, I just did as she said. On the way to home, all I did was thinking about the puzzle. Finally I opened the box. It was a cup printing with a pink word — friendship. It was so lovely that I liked very much.

Now, every time I use a cup, I will think about her and the friendship between us.

十一、书面表达(共1题;共5分)

30.认真阅读下面的图表与文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Significant numbers of high school students are receiving additional assistance from tutors. That requires a measure of time, commitment and sometimes a lot of money.

Tutors may be good for improving test scores, but they may harm a lot if students become overly dependent on tutors. Tutors' role should be one of assessment, monitoring and assistance, not to take over and perfect. Tutors may be used to "bridge the gap", but the responsibility stays on the student to take an active role in mastering the content and skills required for success.

I know kids who refuse to open their textbooks before the tutor gets in the house. Now I want to ask you a question: are you improving your study skills and developing learning intelligence with the "help" of your tutors?

十一、书面表达

30.【答案】Nowadays high school students are paying more for being tutored. While tutors may help with the short-term goal of achieving higher grades, the disadvantages overweigh the advantages.

On the one hand, tutors may be poorly qualified, so parents are placing their children at risk rather than in a strengthened position. On the other hand, dependence on tutors can also be a disadvantage, as students do less for themselves, leaving even the simple tasks of critical thinking, problem solving and brainstorming to tutors.

From my perspective, tutoring can bring long-term negative effects and weaken children's ability and make them passive and dependent learners. What's more, weekly tutoring sessions often reduce the immediacy of the interaction and consequently diminish the impact of prompt feedback. Grades may improve for a short time, but they will lose opportunities to think independently and learn from mistakes. In short, I say No to hiring a tutor.
