第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Uncle Tom gave little Vicki Black a birthday gift one week before her birthday. He told her not to open it until her birthday. She knew her mother wouldn’t tolerate any disrespect to the kind man who helped them out after Vicki’s father passed away. Besides, Vicki didn’t want to get Uncle Tom angry. But little Vicki didn’t want to just hold it and guess what was in it. After all, she looked forward to his coming to show her interesting things, like how to turn an old sock into a doll.

All the day, Vicki couldn’t stop thinking about the gift. While her teacher was giving a lecture, Vicki sat still in her seat, drawing paper dolls inside the box. When school was done, she raced home. Walking into the room, again, she shook the present, but she heard nothing. Holding her breath, she opened the box and looked inside. Seconds later, she cried. When Mrs Black saw the box, she said angrily, “Didn’t I tell you to leave it alone?”Vicki sobbed and said, “Mommy, you don’t understand.”

“Don’t cry to me. You have missed everything now, just because you couldn’t wait, ”Mrs Black accused. “What will Uncle Tom think now?”

“Uncle Tom gave me nothing,”Vicki cried and handed the empty box to her mother. “He played a trick on me.”

Mrs Black said doubtfully, “Uncle Tom is not like that. You must have dropped it.”

Vicki kept crying. Only a rapid knock on the door made the house quiet. It was Uncle Tom. He looked at the empty box. “You have already done it? I told you to wait for your birthday.”

“You didn’t give me a gift.” Fresh tears filled her eyes.

“I try to give you something. I know your birthday is a special day. I tell myself to give you something valuable to last your whole life. I think hard and get an idea to give you an important lesson. If you open it on birthday, I see you learn. Then I will make a big party to celebrate. In the opinion of some people, the most direct, most touching, and easiest way of protecting wild animals, without doubt, is “the rescue of each individual wild animal”. On seeing a recovered bird return to the blue sky, they will feel moved with hot tears in the eyes.

However, what is very easily ignored by them is that the value of protecting each individual wild animal usually does not lie in the individual wild animal itself, but more frequently in the entire species behind each individual . In this aspect, this is different from the rescue of weak individuals in the human society.

There are many differences between animals and human beings. According to biologist Richard Dawkins, the biggest difference possibly lies in that animals are short of social

culture. But here, the culture refers to “the behaviour pattern having nothing to do with heredity(遗传), but which may be copied and inherited(继承)”.

Human beings depend on culture for heritage. As time passes by, the culture has been accumulated to distinguish one group from another. Therefore, the protection of culture is important and necessary. However, wild animals depend on genes for heritage, and therefore, it is important and necessary to keep natural genes in existence. As long as wild animals can pass genes down, the entire species survive.

Therefore, wild animals’value mostly lies in its gene, and the existence of the species is more important. The individual death cannot be avoided, but the gene may exist forever through the gene bank of the species, keeping the species existent.

When we protect wild animal individuals, this is more a measure than a goal. Therefore, the Yellow stone Park has introduced the wolf to control the number of deer and get rid of the old, weak, sick and disabled. Such behavior is beyond imagination among human beings, but in the nature, this is completely normal and reasonable. We often observe wild animals with the judgment that we may have to human beings, ignoring their differences. But if species itself is not in danger, then working hard to protect the individual can do nothing good to the entire species. Of course for other reasons, we still hope to protect these individuals from death, but this does not belong to the narrow sense of animal protection.

5.In the opinion of Richard Dawkins, wild animals are different from human beings because ______.

A. they depend on culture for existence in the world

B. they have no behavior pattern related to heredity

C. they can copy or inherit something from their parents

D. they have poorer social culture than human beings

6.According to the text, how should we protect wild animals?

A. By protecting every wild animal from death.

B. By making their natural genes exist forever.

C. By saving weak animal individuals.

D. By passing the law to forbid killing wild animals.

7.The author uses the example of the Yellowstone Park in order to show ______.

A. protecting wild animal individuals is not a goal

B. protecting wild animals is our goal

C. how to kill those old, weak, sick and disabled deer

D. how to keep the balance between different species

8.The text is mainly developed by ________.

A. giving examples

B. providing explanation

C. making comparisons

D. analyzing causes

Do you think that puppet show(木偶戏) are just for children? In some parts of the world, like Indonesia, a pupp et show is an activity enjoyed by people of all ages.

At most puppet shows, the audience sits on one side of the screen and the puppeteer (操纵木偶的人) sits on the other. However, at an Indonesian shadow puppet show, the audience can choose which side to sit on. From out front, audience members see shadows of puppets acting out exciting scenes of roman ce or battle. These people enjoy the fantasy that “real”events are taking place.

Behind the scenes, it can be fascinating to see a dalang, or puppeteer, in action. The dalang manipulates puppets made of buffalo hide by moving attached rods(棒) of buffalo horn or bamboo. Each of a puppet’s arms and the main part of its body have their own rods, but its legs are rarely moved on their own.

Each puppet has its own voice and its own way of moving. The “good” puppets usually speak calmly and move gracefully.; the “bad” ones have rough voices and move in a funny way. The stories acted out by the puppets are often based on ancient myths or legends. A specially written puppet show might also celebrate a birth, wedding, or harvest. Sometimes a dalang chooses an old story that he thinks is appropriate for the village where the performance will take place. Before the show, he may ask lo cal people about current events in the village and then use the puppet show to illustrate possible solutions to local problems.

The audience of a shadow puppet show expects to settle in for a long evening. A show may start in the later afternoon and not end until four o’clock the next morning! Children and adults alike may fall asleep in the middle of a show and wake up hours later to find

it still going on. Of course, the dalang must remain alert throughout the show. One dalang remarked,”I have no real sense of time until it’s all over.”

9.The text would be of most interest to readers looking for information about _______.

A. forms of entertainment in other cultures

B. how to create their own puppet show

C. how to make their own puppets

D. everyday life in Indonesia

10.How is an Indonesian puppet show different from most other puppet shows?

A. A dalang may take a rest during a show.

B. People can leave in the middle of a show.

C. It is an activity enjoyed by people of all ages.

D. The audience can choose to sit on either side of the screen.

11.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A. The “good” puppets move in a funny way.

B. The dalang attempts to personalize the puppet show for the audience.

C. The audience determines the puppets’ voice and way of moving.

D. A dalang offers solutions to local problems before the show.

D

Don’t you just love ice skating every winter? I am sure that since winter is approaching, your skates are set to come out, just waiting to be used. Impress your friends with your new trick on how to ice-skate backwards with the help of these tips.

Stand Straight

The first thing you need to do is, stand straight. If you feel that you are falling backwards, just put your chin up and slightly bend your knees.

Confidence is What you need

The most important step while learning how to skate backwards, is having enough confidence in what you are doing. How can you achieve this? By practice. Just practice rolling backwards down a gentle slope everyday or just by pushing off from a wall or something of that sort. But before you do that, make sure that the place where you are practicing is free from any kind of debris(碎片) because otherwise, you could land up in the hospital due to some accident. While going backwards, just get used to the feeling of moving backwards. One of the important ice skating tips and techniques is that if you feel you are losing

your balance, then scissor(做剪式运动) your skates. Keep practicing this till you are confident about it.

Maintain Speed

Confident now? Great! Now the next step is to maintain your speed. While rolling in a straight line with one skate, with the other try sculling(划桨), that is , keep pushing yourself backwards with an outwards stroke(滑动). Make sure that you put most of your weight on the skate which is moving straight and not the one with which you are sculling. Now , try the same thing using the other foot. Again keep doing this till you are confident enough.

Increase Your Speed Now

Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increase your speed. Try some of your own tricks now. Scull with either foot or with both at the same time.

Scull And Be Aware

While you keep one foot straight, keep sculling with the other. You can do that with both feet at the same time. Concentrate on what you are doing but don’t get so absorbed, that you don’t see where you are going. If you ar e not watching your back, you might bang(碰撞) against something or someone.

12.Which is the r ight order of ice-skating backwards?

a. Increasing your speed.

b. Being able to scull with one foot.

c. Being about to stand straight.

d. Trying some different tricks.

A.cadb

B. cbad

C. acbd

D. cbda

13.In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express _______.

A. Keeping cautious is as important as skating

B. One must be brave to learn to ice-skate backwards

C. It’s difficult to concentrate when ice-skating backwards

D. It’s a common thing to hit someone when one is ice-skating backwards

14.In order to keep balance when skating backwards you should _______.

A. use both your feet to scull

B. skate forward first and then backward

C. skate in the way that scissors move

D. put most of your weight on the skate with which you are sculling

15.The text is mainly to _______

A. compare different ways of ice-skating backwards

B. offer some advice on ice-skating backwards

C. introduce the culture of ice-skating backwards

D. explain advantages of ice-skating backwards

第三部分: 语法填空 (共 10 小题; 每小题 1.5分, 满分 15分)

According to legend, a young man while wandering in the desert came across a spring of delicious water. It was such sweet water 41 he had ever tasted. So he filled his leather canteen to bring some back to his teacher.

After a four-day journey he presented the water 42 the old man, who took a deep drink, smiled warmly and thanked his student for the sweet water. The young man returned to his village with a happy heart.

Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He 43 (spit) it out, saying it was awful. It 44 (appear) had become sour because of the old leather container.

The student challenged his teacher : “ Master, why did you pretend to like it?” The teacher replied, “You only tasted the water. I tasted the gift. The water was simply the container for an act of loving-kindness and nothing could be 45 (sweet).”

I think we understand this lesson best when we receive innocent gifts of love from young children. 46 it’s a Happy Teachers’ Day or a hand-made bracelet, the natural and proper 47 (respond) is appreciation. Gratitude doesn’t always come naturally. Unfortunately, most children and many adults value only the thing 48 (give) rather than the feeling embodied in it. We should remind 49 (our) and teach our children about the beauty and 50 (pure) of feelings and expressions of gratitude. After all, gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart.

书面表达

Nowadays, going abroad for further study is gaining popularity among Chinese high school graduates.

Actually, there are advantages for such a choice. Living and studying abroad offers high school graduates a different perspectiv e of the world. On a university campus, they are likely to meet people of the same age group from various countries and are exposed to diverse ideas and values.

However, going abroad for further study at such a young age does have its problems. For instance, studying abroad alone, with no one to turn to, they may feel lonely and helpless, when meeting difficulty. Besides, tuition fees for overseas students are relatively high and perhaps beyond the reach of most families financially.

It is my view that although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhile. In addition to knowledge, overseas students can gain precious experience, which is beneficial to the growth of young people.
