Harry has a unique hobby ——he turns pieces of popcorn into small works of art using markers and pens. From small models of celebrities to popular cartoon characters and animals, Harry has a gift for spotting the craziest things in a bowl of popcorn.

It started 28 years ago, when Harry and his wife were sitting on the couch one

evening, eating popcorn. At one point, the artist spotted a strange-looking piece of popcorn that looked like a gorilla. His wife wasn’t interested in the discovery, but he wouldn’t let h er lack of enthusiasm over his. He took out a pen and started painting the details he saw with his mind's eye, eventually bringing the popcorn gorilla to life. And that's how his career as a popcorn artist started.

He always keeps dozens of colored markers and pens on hand when eating popcorn, just in case he spots his next artwork. His collection already numbers hundreds of small pop art items. Some of which are displayed in Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museums worldwide, or in private collections. Some of his works have sold for as much as $300.

Harry claims that a bowl of popcorn can produce around 10 works of art. Harry has experimented with various snacks in the last 27 years, but none has proven to be as satisfying as popcorn. Chips didn't work as well a s he’d hoped, and peanut shells were all too uniform. Microwave popcorn isn’t well suited for pop art either, as Harry says it's all hopelessly slimy, which is why he always pops his own from the brand of corn—Orville Redenbacher.

Once he's done drawing the features of whatever he spots popcorn, Harry preserves them and adds them to his collection. "It is relaxation for me, "Harry says." Sometimes I go to the movies, and as a joke, I take a pen light out of my pocket and look at the popcorn while I’m eating it.

24. How did Harry paint his popcorn gorilla?

A. With the guidance of his wife

B. With various colorful markers.

C. With the model in front of him D With the details he watched

25. What do we know about Harry’s works of art according to Parag raph 3?

A. Most of them are created before he eats popcorns.

B. Most of them are on show in a special museum.

C. They have brought fame and profit to him.

D. A number of people want to collect them.

26. Why does Harry make his popcorn from Orville Redenbacher?

A. It is more delicious than other corn.

B. It offers better material for his artwork.

C. It offers him more chances to walk out.

D. It can offer him a very s pecial experience.

27. What is implied in Harry's words in the last paragraph?

A. He always draws on popcorn at the cinema.

B. He likes to tell jokes with others at the cinema.

C. He has found more funny things in his daily life.

D. He has been seeking a chance to create his artworks.

The face of the four US presidents on Mount Rushmore will likely last for centuries. But at a newly opened exhibit in Japan, you can catch them only for about eight months. This year, the annual sand sculpture event at the Sand Museum in Tottori, Japan, is focused on another country. This is the 10 anniversary of the event. Artists came from 19 countries to shape sand into different sculptures that represent events in US history and American landmarks.

Tottori is a remote city in western Japan. In the past, not many tourists traveled to it. To attract more visitors, Tottori officials decided to use a natural resource: sand. They decided to create a sand museum that would house a series of sand sculptures based on different geographic areas of the world. The sand from each year’s exhibition is used again the next year. The project has been a success. About 500,000 people visit the museum during the eight months. Some return year after year to see the new sculptures.

The city is now a popular spot for sand sculpture artists too. Sculptors from around the world come to Tottori each spring, spending a few weeks working on their masterpieces. They use special tools to smooth the sandy surfaces, cut angles and details. They use only sand and water to create the huge sculptures, some of which tower over their creators.

Originally, the artists built their creations outside. But the works lasted less than two months outdoors. So the museum built a permanent structure to house the artworks, which extended their life to eight months. Now, many more tourists get to see the sculptures. Still, the fact that this art is not permanent is part of the appeal. The temporary sculptures reflect the Japanese value of appreciating the fleeting(短暂的) mature of the world.

Tottori is not the only town that shows temporary art. Sapporo hosts a similar exhibit in the winter, using snow instead of sand. That will be just about the time that the US sand sculpture exhibition is taken apart, and the sand is saved for next year’s show.

28.Why is sand sculpture event held every year in Tottori?

A. To show the wonderful artworks of the city

B. To show the diverse culture of the city

C. To represent the character of the city

D. To attract more visitors to the city

29. What does the underlined word “tower” In Paragraph 3 mean?

A Be huger. B. Be higher. C Be heavier D. Be nicer

30. What do the exhibits in Tottori and Sapporo show?

A. The changing seasons offer artists chances to create arts.

B. Artists are always inspired by their nice surroundings.

C Natural works of art are popular all over the world.

D The sand is more popular to artists than the snow.

31. What can we know about the exhibits from Paragraph 4 and 5?

A New sand will be used by artists every year.

B. More artists show interest in creating arts in sand.

C. It has represented events in more than 10 countries so far.

D. The fact that the exhibit lasts a short time makes it more attractive.

D

My PHD supervisor used to jokingly tell me that he had passed his prime(鼎盛时期) and that it was up to me to make the Nobel-prize winning discovery for our group. After all. Albert Einstein was just 26-years-old when he wrote his paper on Special Relativity. But are we really at our smartest in our 20s? When does our intelligence reach the highest point?

It's an unavoidable fact that our cognitive(认知)abilities are certain to decline at some point We will have a harder time remembering where we placed our keys or recalling the details of our favorite family story. However, our intelligence is multi-faceted(多元的).We have fluid intelligence-that’s our ability to think creatively, solve new problems, and identify patterns, independent of any knowledge from the past. We also have what psychologists call crysta llized (晶体的)intelligence which reflects ou r learned knowledge and ability to relate to our surroundings. This improves somewhat with age, as experiences tend to expand one’s knowledge. These two forms of intelligence are thought to reach the highest point at different times in our lives.

Recently, researchers at Harvard and MIT carried out a study. The results of the study showed that we don't have to worry about our intelligence too much. For example, 50,000 test participants showed that our ability to process information quickly

reaches the highest point at around age 18 or 19. Our short-term memory tops out around the age of 25. Likewise, our skill at recognizing faces is greatest when we are in our early 30s. The best age for creativity in physics appears to be around 48 years old on average. Our overall knowledge, including vocabulary, don't top out until we are around 50 years old on average.

The best age for intellectual activity also appears to be shifting. For example, Nobel Prize winners are doing their award-winning work later and later.

32. What do we learn about the writer?

A. He used to be a PHD supervisor

B. He studied for a doctor's degree

C. He has made great breakthroughs

D. He has a good knowledge of physics.

33. Which of the following belongs to crystallized intelligence?

A. Creative thinking

B. Pattern recognition

C Problem-solving D. Know ledge accumulation

34. What is fluid intelligence?

A. An intelligence common in animals and humans

B. An intelligence certain to decline with age.

C The ability to think and solve problems

D The ability to remember our past knowledge

35. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph "shifting "mean?

A Moving

B Removing C. Falling D. Lifting

I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. 36.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Lady, are you rich? B.A story of Thanksgiving Day C.Don't forget how rich you are D.Does cups and saucers match well? 37.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.The girl thought the writer was rich just because she wanted to make the writer happy. B.The writer had thought she wasn't rich because her supplies were not expensive. C.If cups and saucers match well, they are a best pair even though cheap.
