My name is Zhang Penghai, 24 years old, and I come from Jiangsu University. I’m this year’s graduate. My major is Mechanical Design Manufacturing and Automation. My hometown is Anyang of Henan province.
During the about 4 years in the college, I study very hard. I have got three times the school scholarship. At the same time I have passed CET 4 and 6.
In my spare time, I like listening to music quietly, do some reading in the library or playing table tennis with my classmates though I’m not good at it.
When I was in the high school, I found out I was good at thinking, so I have determined to do research job in the remaining life. Last year I chose the postgraduate examination to get here and now I’m looking forward to studying here.

I love the feeling in the university. In the high school, I found I’m good at thinking, and I have determined to do research job in the college in the future. Tell something about your major in the university.
My major is Mechanical Design Manufacturing and Automation. In the high school I was interested in mathematics, but when I came to college my sight expanded and I have been deeply attracted by the mechanics. Then I realized mathematics is just the fundamental tool of science, but Mechanical Engineering is the foundation of the national economy. I like Mechanical Engineering and in the daily life, I like car especially the outside shape and structure of car is so charming, and I have seen the beauty of the machinery, though I can’t list the common banks of car.

I believe that, if I can pursue my study here, I will spare no efforts to study for not only master’s degree but also doctor’s degree. After all, doing research job is my dream and I will take this as my job in the future.

I feel that my great merit [or strength] is the spirit of persistence. When I do something, I will stick to it until I get it done. After all, effort is success.
I feel that my great weakness is that my mandarin is not good. So when I say something, maybe others will not follow me clearly. And what’s more, when I say something, I will speak it so straightly and frankly which will embarrasses others at sometimes.

What’s your impression of Xi’an Jiao Tong University and what’s your impression of Xi’an?
The Qujiang campus is so beautiful. The teaching buildings are tall, the students and teachers here are so friendly. And the air here is a little drier than Zhenjiang, but the wind is lighter. What’s more, the atmosphere here is familiar to my hometown Anyang.
Xi’an Jiao Tong University is traced back to the Nanyang Public school in
Shanghai in 1896. It is renamed Jiao Tong University in 1921. In 1956, at the direction of state council, one part of the university was moved to Xi’an here and another part was remained in Shanghai, So two famous schools were born, Xi’an Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Both of them are schools of Project 211 and 985.
Today, Xi’an Jiao Tong University has three campuses, Xingqing[兴庆],Yanta[雁塔],Qujiang[曲江].
Xi’an is the province of Shanxi province. And Xi’an is one of the six ancient capitals in China. It was called Chang’an in Han Dynasty, meaning the ‘permanent peace’. When I got off the train, I was impressed by the ancient and classical glamour here. The people here are friendly and the price of the commodities here is lower than Zhenjiang. In my opinion, Xi’an is a city which is fit for living and studying and I’m looking forward to having a chance to study here.
Xi’an is a world famous tourist city. It’s the starting point of Silk Road. Both the Museum of Terra Cotta Warriors and Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang are famous.
A cultural and ancient glamour is filling in the air atmosphere here.

I come from Anyang of He’nan province. Anyang is the ancient capital of Shang Dynasty. Anyang is famous for its Yin Ruins, which has been acknowledged as a World Cultural Heritage site. It’s the birthplace of Chinese characters. The inscriptions[碑文，题词] on bones or tortoise shells are the oldest Chinese characters. The weather in Anyang is similar to here. And I have a beautiful childhood in my hometown.

Tell us something about Zhenjiang.
Jiangsu University is located in Zhenjiang, and is on the south bank of Yangzi River. It has three campuses now, Jingkou, Beigu and Mengxi. Its teaching history can trace back to Shanjiang Normal School founded in 1902. But our school was recombined in 2001. Jiangsu University is famous for mainly four disciplines, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Food Engineering and Clinical Medicine. Zhenjiang is located on the south bank of Yangzi River and is near to Nanjing. There are many rivers and mountains there, such as the Golden Hill, the Beigu Hill and the Masan Mountain. The Golden Hill temple on the Golden Mountain is the most famous place and it’s the practice place of Fahai who is a Buddhist Monk. The special products of Zhenjiang are very delicious, such as pot cover noodles and Henshun aromatic vinegar[vinige].

My favorite sport is table tennis though my skill is not very excellent. When there is some spare time, I will go to the gymnasium with my classmates to play table tennis. Sports can enhance both our body and sprit. So, in my opinion, playing table tennis is a good habit.

Do you have a big family or a small one?
In fact, there are so many members in my family, my father, my mother, my older sister, my younger sister and my brother. And I’m the youngest of my brother and sisters. Now, both my sisters and brother are married, and I have many nephews, nieces. My father is a carpenter and my older sister is a teacher others are peasants. My father influences me most. He likes He’nan Opera and he is good at many music instruments, such as ‘Banhu’ and ‘Erhu’ in Chinese. But I have no music cells. When I was young, it’s my father who teaches me so many things, such as the spirit of persistence, hardworking.

My spoken English is not very good. In fact, we all don’t have an English atmosphere to practice. What’s more, I don’t have an effective learning method to remember the words and phrases or vocabulary.
In fact, many books and journals are written in English, especially advanced manufacturing methods, so English is of great importance to the study of major. If we can’t read in English, there will be so much inconvenience to the postgraduate study in the future.
