Our neighbour’s son was getting married at an

out-of-town church, and my husband and I were invited. We

immediately rushed out to a store, and I bought a nice pink

dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a

month to go before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a

few pounds.

June 29 came and, of course, I hadn’t lost a single pound;

in fact I had gained two. But I figured a nice new girdle (紧身内

衣) would cure everything. So on our way out of the city we

stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I

needed a large-size girdle. The shop assistant found the box

with the described girdle marked “LG”, and asked if I would

li ke to try it on. “Oh, no, a large one will fit just right. I

needn’t try it on.”

The next morning was rather hot, so I waited to get

dressed until about 45 minutes before time to go. I opened

the box only to find a new girdle in a small size. Since it was

too late to find another one and the dress woul dn’t fit right

without a girdle, a fight broke out in the hotel room between

me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake 20 pounds of

potatoes into a five-pound bag? That’s it. Finally my husband,

laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down

into it. At once I put on the pink dress, which didn’t ma my red face well, and was ready to go.

Finally we got to the church. I heard one of the people say

that they were having a High Mass. I turned to my husband

and asked, “What is a High Mass?” He shrugged his shoulders.

Unfortunately, I learned that this particular mass would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight and one half seconds --- the priest (神父) was going to bless everything except my girdle.

Living a healthy lifestyle lies in forming the right eating habits. Here are some of the good habits you can develop when it comes to healthy eating.

Drink plenty of water. You must drink at least 8 glasses of

water a day. You may need even more water if you are in a hot environment or if you are exercising.

Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the

day. A recent study has shown that those who eat breakfast will consume an average of 100 calories less during the day than their colleagues who skipped breakfast. They will also be

able to concentrate better.

Don’t skip lunch. If you do so, your blood sugar level will

drop and your metabolism (新陈代谢) will slow down. When you get home you are starving and eat everything you can find.

We all need to snack from time to time, but please choose

your snacks carefully. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks besides your three main meals. Choose healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables, low fat yogurt, cottage

cheese with apple sauce, and so on.

Eat your fruit and vegetables. We should eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Take a piece of fruit for

a snack, add some banana and raisins to your favourite breakfast cereal, have a salad with lunch, and eat at least one vegetable at dinner each night.

Do not eat your dinner too late. Try to eat dinner at least 3

hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance

to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8 hours.

Plan dinner for the week ahead of time and make sure you have everything you need in the house so other family members can get a head start on dinner if you have a late meeting at the office.

36. How many good eating habits are mentioned in the passage?

A. 5.

B. 6.

C. 7.

D. 8.

37. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water whatever the environment may be.

B. Breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, fruit and vegetables are equally important.

C. It is suggested that you eat your dinner at seven if you

plan to go to bed at ten.

D. It is good for your health to eat fruits and vegetables at

each meal every day.

38. The underlined word “raisin” most probably means “_____”.

A. a dried grape

B. a peach leaf

C. a piece of cheese

D. a peanut

39. Who is this passage intended for?

A. Students.

C. Housewives.

A. in a textbook

While the history of technology can be traced along many

lines, one of the most intriguing (引人入胜的) development is

that of photo technology, the technology of light. From the prehistoric invention of fire to laser beams (激光束) and fiber

optics (光纤), l ight has “continuall y occupied the minds of

inven tors”. Their inventions fall into two groups: the use of

light to help us see better and more interestingly, the use of

light for purposes of communication.

The use of light for communicating is one of the major

directions that technology has taken ever since the middle of

the nineteenth century. From still photography to motion

pictures to television (with a development from

black-and-white to color imagery in each), photo technology

has had a great effect upon mass communication and mass

education. Unlike the printed word, visual images have more

impact because they are more immediate: They copy reality in

a way that the printed word cannot. Unlike letter shapes, they

are not abstract; unlike words, they require no symbolic

interpretation by the mind. Combined with the widespread

and uniform spreading of such images, photo technology

affects the thinking of vast audiences and shapes their view of

reality.

Millions of Americans are affected by the

commercially-inspired electronic manipulation (操作) of

artific ial images. We call it “entertainment” and can’t wa to get more.

As the number of commercially available television

channels grows, the viewer’s freedom of choice increases,

but so does the burden of that choice. Increasingly he is faced

with a sea of information and is asked to make quick choices.

More significantly, the ease and rapidity of mass communication has created a supply of information greater than it can readily be absorbed. Flooded in the sea of information, the individual struggles to swim through it.

41. It can be learned about the technology of light from

the first paragraph that _____.

A. its mere practical use is to enable people to see well

B. it achieved a remarkable development in the early nineteenth century

C. its development is related to the study of the history of technology

D. it has aroused the interest of inventors ever since ancient times

42. According to the passage, visual images differ from the printed words in that _____.

A. they have much deeper meanings

B. they have a greater immediate influence upon the viewer

C. they fail to produce a beneficial effect upon youngsters

D. they enable the viewer to use his imagination fully

43. It can be learned from the passage that with the development of photo technology, _____.

A. more and more people seem to prefer TV programs to

reading activities

B. the number of TV viewers has become greater than that

of film goers

C. more and more television channels are opened

D. it takes less time for a new idea to be absorbed

is most probably

44. The underlined word “impact”

equal to _____.

A. influence

B. effort

C. value

D. audience

45. The paragraph is mainly about _____.

A. the speed of mass communication

B. the influence of light on communication

C. the history of technology

D. the number of television channels
