It’s big, it’s nasty but it’s more than just a hole in the ground. Some landfills take in 2,000 tons of trash a day but America’s largest landfill

takes in that amount each hour, which will be full in two to

three years.

Garbage problem has been a long-standing issue.

Volunteer students at the University of Arizona in the U.S.

started the Garbage Project. They aimed at learning the influence of human’s activities on the environment by studying the garbage.

One important thing the students learned was that the garbage in landfills disappears very slowly. That was surprising to the students, as well as to many scientists who had predicted that about 70% of the garbage in landfills would break down naturally and quickly. From the landfills, students even found newspapers twenty years ago and forty-year-old hot dogs.

The Garbage Project also discovered that what people say they do was often very different from what they actually did. The volunteer students asked people what they bought, ate and drank, and then they compared this to what people threw away. For some reason, the two didn’t match. For example, the students found much more empty bottles of beer than people said they drank.

Information from the Garbage Project has helped us to see how much garbage we actually put in landfills. The students are hopeful that this will encourage us to find better ways to dispose (处置) of our garbage.

Of course, the best way to dispose of garbage depends on what kind of garbage it is: regular garbage, hazardous materials, or recyclables such as newspaper, glass bottles, and some metals. Regular garbage goes to regular landfills. Hazardous materials, on the other hand, contain poisonous chemicals or metals. They shouldn’t go into regular landfills. For example, waste batteries can pollute the soil and groundwater, which need to be recycled properly.

It’s necessary to reduce garbage from the source. With the development of living standards, people use too many plastic products only once before throwing them away,

especially as online shopping becomes more popular. We can start reducing garbage by using cloth shopping bags and green delivery packages.

Unfortunately, recycling is expensive. It takes time and special treatment. However, in Japan, people recycle garbage so carefully that even plastic bottles and their caps go into different bins. Positive effects present gradually. In the last five years, the Japanese city of Kamikatsu has raised its rate of recycled waste to 80 percent.

It is a matter of great urgency and we must go into action now. There are many things that ordinary people can do to make less garbage. If everyone does the same, we will make our living environment safer and better.

A phenomenon known as “kuakuaqun” or “praise groups” has taken Chinese social media by storm. The number of related topics on

Weibo has reached more than 23 million. Users can join a

chat group on WeChat or QQ, where they are showered

with varieties of generous praise and encouragement.

Praising others like this is also very popular among teens who prefer to call it “Rainbow Fart”.

Just imagine the scenes: You get an A in an exam and you want to get some praise. When you post it into a praise group, you are praised for not only your efforts but also being as clever as Albert Einstein. It’s 10 p.m. and you are the only person in

the office. You receive a reply, “You are so hardw orking! You’ll definitely get a promotion (升职)! Praise to you!” Even if you go to a toilet and forget taking some tissue, someone points out that “you’re caring about trees and the environment! Good for you!”

How would you feel?

The appearance of “praise groups” provides an opportunity for ordinary people who cannot get positive feedback easily in their daily life to get comfort from their hearts. It also shows the life and social pressure of today’s young people. Moreover, the popularity of these chat groups is a reflection of Chinese culture which values modesty and humility — people often hide their true emotion of seeking and giving praise. As long as people’s praise doesn’t sound obviously untruthful, you’re likely to welcome it. Being richly affirmed (肯定) for what you door who you are — just feel good. Sometimes, people enjoy praising others as well, just because here they can drop everything and have fun by giving lavish (夸张的) comments. However, some people are also willing to encourage and support others from their hearts.

Some netizens (网民) shared their ideas, “I take it as a way of adjusting the mood. The praise group helps in adding our confidence. Some sincere praises can even be inspiring. However, if you’re really in trouble, it is you who h olds the final key.” Clearly,some dishonest praise comes at a cost. Chen Kan, an associate professor in Fudan University’s psychology department warned that “The biggest risk is to continue to stress on the ‘false self’, which makes it harder to see the ‘true self’.” In the end, people in the group will find that such unreasonable praise doesn’t help solve the real problem.
