I managed a restaurant in Shreveport, Louisiana. One of the employees was a girl named Jeanette

Hannon. I could see that Jeanette was a real talent, but she had one problem:she was habitually late.

Firing Jeanette was out of the question, but I wanted her to understand how it was important to be on

time. I gave her written warnings. She would be on time for a while, but before long, she would be back to her old habit. At that time, I had the “my way or the halfway” management style,so I told her that she had been warned for the last time. If she was late again, I was going to let her go. I was proud of myself for showing her who the boss was. For three weeks, I noticed that Jeanette was more than thirty minutes late a couple of days in a row. If Jeanette was going to push back, I was going to push back harder. I thought about it all day. I was going to hit her where it hurt. I demoted her and reduced her wage to the minimum.

I called her into the office that day. 1 was prepared for whatever excuse she had, and she told me her three young children had to be taken to different schools. Jeanette didn’t have a car, so she was at the mercy of the public transportation system.

Nevertheless, 1 thought it would show weakness if I gave in, so I stuck to my punishment plan. Today,I call my management style stupid and cocky(自大的).

After three weeks, I asked her what she thought of my decision. She said she could understand me, but she was not regretful for being late because family is always in the first place in her heart. Jeanette surprised me. Jeanette realized money and jobs are important, but not more important than family. I know it well now and still think about how foolish I was for not realizing it at that time.

As we all know, drinking beers while running can upset the stomach. However, that’s all part of the attraction of the Beer Mile, a unique race that has participants competing in running and drinking. The Beer Mile Race started off as a tradition in 1990, when a group of Canadians thought it would he fun to race each other while drinking a few beers. But it has come a long way since then. The Beer Mile Race is now a major sporting event with around 100,000 official competitors, brand name sponsors and so on. In 2015, the first Beer Mile World Classic was held in San Francisco, where all of the record holders from Canada and the United States came together for the competition. But this year, tlie event was organized in London,in an effort to take in more competitors about the sport outside North America.

The rules of the race are pretty simple:runners have to consume four beers before each of the four 400-meter laps圈) making up the famous Beer Mile. The beers can come in bottles or cans but should not be less than 355ml and must be at least 5% alcohol. In the case of vomiting(呕吐)during the race, and yes, there’s quite a bit of that during the Beer Mile, offenders (犯规者)must complete one more lap at the end to the race. Organizers mention that even in the case of vomiting several times, only one more lap must be completed.

Thomas Sommer had held various, challenging roles at a company. But after 20 years at the firm, at 47, he felt exhausted and that he couldn’t make a difference anymore. “The values at Credit Suisse no longer matched my own values. My heart said, ‘ change something,’” he said,“but my head didn’t want to hear that. ” Despite those upset feelings,Sommer tried to keep on working in the job for more years. However, his 14-hour workdays meant he was too busy and tired. At last,in 2012; he couldn’t persist(坚持)in the job any longer.

Why did Sommer fail to make the changes? It was a case of self-sabotage(自我糟践). He said,“ I kept telling myself I hadn’t gone to many professional development courses lately and, anyway, I had a family to support. In the end, my tired body made t he choice for me. ”

Sommer’s not alone. According to experts, self-sabotage can affect almost anyone, since it’s an expression of basic human self-doubt and may be a need of disengagement(解脱).

Gay Hendricks is the author of The Big Leap, a book about taking your life to the next level. He says self-sabotaging behavior is a response to hitting your upper limit, whether that’s your upper limit of career success, creative expression or even relationship harmony. As you meet with the upper limit problem, you may face the challenge and have fears. You are probably afraid of lacking confidence. You may worry that you might be unfaithful to your roots or past if you achieve your goal. You may also fear that more success brings a bigger burden, or fear that youll outshine others. Those fears can lead you to self-sabotage.

If you want to stop self-sabotaging, first learn to recognize the causes of self-sabotage. It is caused by the fears which come to you when you meet the upper limit. So try to get the fears out of your mind to overcome the self-sabotage.

32. What made Sommer fail to return to work at last?

B.Self-asbotaging may happen to people hitting the upper limit.

C.We'd better not be more outstanding than others.

D.Self-sabotage can cause people to have more and more fears.

35. According to the passage, which is the way to end self-sabotage?
