Imagine having a ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea from a horror movie. But it could

happen in the near future.

Canadian biophysicist Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He thinks fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.

Scientists have been trying to grow organs (器官) in labs to replace our old ones. But it is a hard job.

For example, liver cells (肝细胞) can grow in a lab, but the cells still need things like blood vessels (血管)

to actually work. These things have to grow inside a scaffold (支架).

In the past, scientists have used man-made materials, animals parts and even dead people as scaffolds.

But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.

Pelling and his team, however, found the apple to be a cheap and easy-to-use scaffold.

They first cut an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple’s cell and make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple, and watched it grow.

“You can implant these scaffolds into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and

aid during a Ted Talk speech.

actually keep these things alive,” Pelling s

The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse’s cells slowly took over the pieces of apple.

Now Pelling is thinking of other fruit, plants or vegetables to use.

He says that the shape of flower petals could be perfect for repairing skin. And asparagus(芦笋) could

fix a broken spine(脊柱).

Now, Pelling and his team are trying hard to put these crazy ideas into reality.

D. ordinary apples

45. The underlined word “implant” in Paragraph 7 probably means ______.

b. add human cells to the apple scaffold

c. cut an apple into the shape of an ear

d. make the apple ear a scaffold

A. a-b-c-d-e

B. b-c-d-a-e

C. c-e-d-b-a

D. c-d-a-e-b

47. From the last three paragraphs, we can infer that Pelling will experiment with other fruit, plants or

vegetables _______.

A. to make human ears

B. to repair burnt skin

C. to fix a broken spine

What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt? Or is it the look on the recipient

face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most?

This Christmas I was discussing what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he

never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were

leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The

message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a

poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion (蒲公英) standing against the bright blue sky,

inspired me. My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason

why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.

I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of

the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details

another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he

did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem

was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with

blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched

both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood. I

felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.

Christma s soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad’s face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame, I knew I had given the perfect gift.

48. The idea for a special gift began to form when the author was _______.

A. doing shopping

B. having a discussion

C. reading a message

D. leaving for Wyoming

49. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to a poem by _______.

A. the father

B. the author

C. William Blake

D. Edgar Allan Poe

50. The author made the gift by _______.

A. matching the words with pictures

B. drawing the background by hand

C. painting the letters in three colors

D. searching for the poems online

51. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To show how to design images for gifts.

B. To suggest making gifts from one’s heart.

C. To explain how computers help create gifts.

D. To describe the gifts the author has received.

For me, living in Canada for 25 years, China is a new world that I have longed to explore. This spring, I chose Yangzhou to be my first stop on a 16-month trip around China. It was like love at first sight. At 15, I bought a book of collection of poems about Tang Dynasty. Through it, I heard of Yangzhou for the first time. I was deeply attracted(吸引) by a poem written by Li Bai-“Sailing to Yangzhou in March ”(烟花三月下扬州).

Yangzhou, sitting 2,500 years at the crossing of the Yangtze River and the 2,400-year-old Grand Canal(大运河),is one of the first 24 historic and cultural cities in China. In the old town, there are many streets and houses. It

’s best to visit the city in spring. Spring paints the city in br igtht colors.

Yangzhou has always been famous for its gardens. Among them ,the Slender West Lake, one of the biggest attractions in the city, was my first stop. The park with its fantastic landscape and lots of history has enough to keep a tourist busy for the whole day. What a shame I simply could afford half a day!

My next stop was He Garden, one of the best prottected gardens in Yangzhou. It was once owned by the family of He Zhidao in Qing Dynasty. He Zhidao successfully brought Chinese and Western architectural(建筑的) features together.

Yangzhou is also the starting point of the Grand Canal tour. Taking a boat along the part of the canal in

Yangzhou, I was amazed at the liveliness of this ancient waterway and the city’s history and cultu Luckily, my two-day trip to Yangzhou was filled with pleasure and wonder. It made me hungry for
