Teaching aims:

Knowledge aims:To learn the basic structure of the passage about

advantages and disadvantages.

Ability aims: 1) To be able to talk about advantages and disadvantages.

2) To be able to write a passage about advantages and

disadvantages.

Emotional aims: To be willing to take use of advantages and try to avoid its disadvantages.

Teaching difficult and important points:

To know how to write a good passage about advantages and disadvantages.

Teaching methods:Cooperation; Discussion.

Teaching aids: Multimedia

Teaching procedures.

Step 1. Lead in

Show some pictures of presents and a birthday cake. Ask the Ss: “Imagine today is your birthday, which of the presents do you want to choose?”

Step 2. Speaking

Show 4 presents, ask the Ss to choose one, and then ask them which one they want most and why. In this way, advantages can be talked about.(brings us convenience, work more efficiently, surf the Internet). Ask the students what they can do using computers.(search for information, chat with friends, go shopping, listen to music, play computer games and watch videos)

Ask: “We can see computers have so many advantages. But is it all good? Does it have disadvantages?”Then let the Ss discuss the disadvantages of computers.(do harm to our eyes and health; affect our work and study; get cheated; lead to crime)

Step 3. Writing

1) Hand out the sample passage (about advantages and disadvantages of computers).

Ask: a). How many paragraph does the passage consist of?

b). What’s the main idea of each paragraph?

2) Next, analyze the passage again. This time paragraph by paragraph. At the same time, talk about some expressions of importance, advantages, disadvantages and conclusion.

3) Then ask: how can we write a good passage? Compare 3 pairs of sentences: 1) I used to do a lot of homework even at weekends; I used to do endless homework even at weekends. 2) The boy stood on the playground. He was Tom; The boy who stood on the playground was Tom.

3).I have more reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in

a situation of my own. I am able to better understand the author’s ideas. So I think reading the original work is better than to see the film based on it; I have more reasons for it. In a word, to read the origin al work is better than to see the film based on it.

Ask the Ss which is better, thus let them find the three most important factors of writing a good passage: advanced vocabulary; advanced sentences; conjunctions. Then ask the Ss to read the passage again and find the advanced vocabulary, advanced sentences and conjunctions.

Step 4. Practice.

Show pictures of some cars and ask the students what advantages and disadvantages the private cars have. After talking about its advantages and disadvantages, divide the Ss into groups of four. Each student write one paragraph and after 5 minutes, the group leader need to collect the four paragraph and read the whole passage.

After 5 minutes, ask two groups to read the passage they have written. Then read aloud the sample passage.

Step5. Homework

Write a passage about the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city.

Our school subjects include politics, Chinese, English, ma ths, history, geography, physics, chemistry and biology and so on. Most of us pay great attention to the study of English, Chinese and maths because they are very important subjects in the university entrance exam. We take special interest in English. We have sp ent much time on it, but we still find it difficult to learn the language well. In the afternoon when c lass is over, we enjoy staying at school for about one hour for some physical exercises before l eaving for home. 4. My Home Village My home village is a small one. It's in Yuxian county of Shanxi Province. Small as it is, it's ver y beautiful. There are many hills around my home village and they are more beautiful than some big mount ains. In spring, we can fly kites which are made by ourselves on the top of the hills. The kites fly very high. In summer, the trees are green and the grass is green, too. It is green everywhere on the hills. There are so many wild apple trees on the hills. The wild apples are nice to eat. In autumn, the corns under and around the hills are ripe. So we eat them almost every day. In winter, when it snows, all the ground is covered with snow. We can play with snow and sometimes we eat the cle an snow with sugar. In my hometown the sky is blue, the air is clean, the water is sweet and the p eople are very friendly.
