When John Muir, at twenty—nine, left his job as a machinist, he acted with his typical independence by walking to Florida, a distance of about a thousand miles. He chose the widest ways, as he felt the need to give himself to the natural world. He felt that life was too precious to be devoted to machines. As he later put it, he could have become a millionaire but he chose to become a tramp. And, as it turned out, a millionaire’s life could not have produc ed the effect that John Muir’s life has had on the American landscape. After this walk to Florida, Muir eventually found himself in California where he became attracted by Yosemite Valley. There he began his career as a nature journalist and conservationist. He also explored the mountains extensively and traveled to other wild areas, including Alaska. His life fell into a single—developing pattern of devotion to all things natural.

Besides independence, endurance and joy were a large part of Muir’s characte r. He would set off for a mountain trek(艰苦跋涉) with very few belongings and only a little food. These would last him for weeks of climbing and exploring. Wherever he looked, he saw beauty and he felt joy. He felt as if the beauty was evidence of a divine(神圣的) presence, and eventually, in his own mind, the line between the divine and nature became blurred(模糊). Muir was one of the first voices in favor of the wild in a time better known for the destruction and exploitation of nature. Australia is a huge island continent. While its coasts are green and fertile, the middle of the country is a desert. The “Red Centre”, as it is sometimes called, stretches for thousands of square miles, and contains very lit tle except sand, stones, red dirt and kangaroos. Then, in the middle of the country, as far inland as it is possible to be, is one of the most amazing sights in the world; Uluru, a huge red sandstone rock, nearly 350 metres high, and measuring 9 kms around its surrounding edge, is a truly breath-taking sight.

For the Aborigines(土着人), who have lived in Australia for thousands of years, the rock is an important part of their spiritual history and culture. Ancient cave paintings can be seen on its sides. Aboriginal elders tell stories and legends about the rock which have been handed down for centuries. They say that tribes of Aborigines lived near Uluru when the world was still very young. The legends explain the rock’s different caves, shapes and colors.

One legend tells how a tribe was attacked by an evil dingo, or a wild dog, and huge holes in the rock show where the people jumped away from the dog. Another story explains that a colored stain(污渍) down one side of the rock was left from the blood of an enemy tribe. Scientists say that these shapes and marks are really caused by the wind and rain wearing away the rock’s surface. But when you see the rock it seems that there is something precious and magical about Uluru that science cannot explain.

For many year s, Uluru was known as “Ayers Rock”, which was given by European settlers. However, in 1977, out of respect for the Aboriginal people, its name was officially changed to Uluru, the rock’s ancient Aboriginal name. In 1985, the land around Uluru, known as Uluru National Park, was officially given back to its traditional Aboriginal owners.

There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable. At an earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have been justified. Now, however, this desire for more than we need is a problem. Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much, too fast.

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These proponents(建议者) of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization.

This debater over the desirability of continued economic growth is of vital importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mention cannot be ignored. To find a solution, economists and the business community must pay attention to these problems and continue discussing them with one another.

A.The benefits of a faster economic growth.

B.How fast economic growth should be.

C.How to increase economic growth.

D.The need for a slower economic growth.

66.How does the author see the debate?

B.He believes that a faster economic growth serves mankind better.

C.He rejects two opinions by stating undesirabilities of both.

D.He recommends that problems raised by those who criticize economic growth be given

attention.

67.Which of the following is NOT indicated in the passage?

A.As we become more and more able, we tend to want more than we actually need.

B.At an earlier period, people were more concerned with obtaining the basic needs than with wanting more than they needed.

C.Development and progress are brought about by people’s desire for more than is needed.

D.Good intentions don’t always bring good results.

British potato farmers were taking to the streets to call for the expression “couch potato” to be struck from the dictionary on the grounds that it harms the vegetable’s image.

The British Potato Council wants the Oxford English Dictionary to replace the expression with the term “cou ch potato”, with protests planned outside parliament in London and the offices of Oxford University Press.

Kathryn Race, head of marketing at the council, which represents some 4000 growers and processors, said the group had complained in writing to the OED, but had yet to receive a response.

“We are trying to get rid of the image that potatoes are bad for you,” she said on Monday.

“The potato has had its knocks in the past. Of course it is not the Oxford English Dictionary’s fault, but we want to use anoth er term that ‘couch potato’, because potatoes are naturally healthy.”

The OED says “couch potato” originated as American slang, meaning “a person who spends leisure time passively or idly sitting around, especially watching television or video tapes.”

The Potato Council says its campaign has the backing of dieticians who say the vegetable is low in fat and high in vitamin C.

Supporting the campaign, famous chef Antony Worrall Thompson said the vegetable was one of Britain’s favorite goods.

“Not only are the y healthy, they are convenient and taste great, too. Life without potato is like a sandwich without a filling,” he said.

John Simpson, chief editor of the Oxford University, said the dictionary first included the term “couch potato” in 1993 and said “dictionaries just reflect the words that society uses.”

Simpson said words were never taken out of the full length dictionary, which includes some 650,000 words contained in 20 volumes.

But little—used words can be removed from the smaller dictionaries to make way for newer ones.

“If society stops using words, then they are taken out of the smaller dictionaries,” he added.

“The first known recorded used of the expression ‘couch potato’ was in 1979 Los Angeles Times article.” Simpson said.

Nigel Evans, a member of a parliament for the Ribble Valley in Lancashire, has made a motion in supporting the campaign, highlighting the nutritional value of the British potato.

You have two ways to use the money and it’s really tough to decide.

I know a car can give you pleasure. There’s the pleasure of not having to depend on public transportation. There is also the pleasure of being independent. You are able to go anywhere your car can take you. While the memories of vacation abroad can give you the same pleasure every time you think of them.

I would choose the racation. It gives you a chance to get away from the familiar place and see the world from a new point of view. It lets you do nothing but play, even for a short period of time. It is absolutely necessary for everyone’s mental and physical health.

They should be more flexible and listen to their body, especially when they are in pain. Type B Personality
