How do young people learn best? This is something I think a lot when I am teaching foreign languages to young people. I often 51 that traditional teaching 52 are hardly effective for young brains to learn a foreign language.

After moving to southern Italy, I was 53 to have had the chance to 54 a private course teaching English to children under 7. I 55 children liked singing and enjoyed games so I wanted to use these 56 to help my students 57 English conversation skills. I found some fun and 58 songs online, which they loved very much. I also found the English version of some nursery rhymes(童谣)they once were 59 with. All of them were very entertaining and helpful but 60 could still not have a basic 61 in English.

I wanted these students to be 62 in the language I was teaching and I also wished them

to speak it. I was eager to deliver 90% of my lessons in English. 63 , I knew it would be difficult to get them to talk in a foreign language they 64 speak outside our lessons. So I had to 65 a simple yet effective plan.

One day I decided to 66 a dialogue in English and rather than simply getting students to repeat the phrases, I got them to chant (反复唱) 67 . I discovered that chanting was a practical way to get students to speak in English-it 68 !

So when teaching English to young people now, I 69 them to make up their own chants to help them remember 70 or complex sentences.

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my 71 . Week

by week her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn’t a(n) 72 student; I talked too much; I was too

73 , always feeling superior to(胜过) others, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could.

74 , I became very angry. I ran to my father with 75 in my eyes.

He 76 to me quietl y, and then he asked, “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever 77 what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s 78 . Go and 79 a list of everything she said and mark the points that are 80 . Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

I did 81 he told me. To my great 82 , I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t 83 (like being very thin), but a good number I could, and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I went to a fairly 84 picture of myself.

I brought the list back to daddy. He 85 to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know 86 than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to 87 , not just close your ears in 88 , feeling hurt when something said about you is true. You’ll find it of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your affairs. Don’t 89 your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”

Daddy’s advice has always 90 me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

Honest Thanks

I sat down at my desk and started writing. I wrote an emotional letter of gratitude. I put the notecard into the 151 , sealed it and stuck the stamps on it, but when it came to actually placing the letter into the mailbox ...I 152 .

The letter was to a schoolmate with whom I kept in contact via Facebook 153 . She had inspired me to live a(n) 154 life — for example, by 155 more.

Her volunteer efforts weren't 156 — she wasn't building wells in Uganda, but 157 she was doing small, local good deeds, such as serving as a crossing guard. These were things I could do, too. She made me 158 I could make a difference here at home. I felt I should let her know how her 159 positively influenced my life. I could have easily sent her an email, 160 that seemed a bit lame for such an important thank you. That's why I ended up 161 the letter. But now I stood before the mailbox, unable to place the envelope inside. What was

162 me? Why was this so 163 to do? I guess I felt strange because it wasn't like she was my best friend. I just knew her. “People don't 164 do this,” I thought to myself. However, 165 thinking it over, I still felt a(n) 166 to let her know how grateful I was. Finally, I put the envelope in the mailbox.

Weeks later I received her reply. She was 167 a tough time and my letter meant the 168 to her. She didn't know she had such a(n) 169 on others. Not only did this letter make her happy, but her response to it increased my 170 of happiness. I decided to write a gratitude letter to someone each month. Cultivating gratitude is a great skill to practice. Life is too

short not to do it.

2019人教版高中英语必修3电子课本 word版

普通高中课程标准实验教科书《英语》电子课本 Book 3 Unit 1 Festivals around the world B3U1P1-3 FESTIV ALS AND CELEBRATIONS Ancient Festivals Festivals and celebrations of all kinds are held everywhere. The most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of the cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Other celebrations were held when hunters could catch animals. They would starve if food was difficult to find, so they celebrated when they had food. They lit fires and made music because they thought these festivals would bring a year of plenty. Festivals of the Dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead, or satisfy and please the ancestors, who could return either to help or to do harm. In Japan the festival is called Obon, when people should go to clean the graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They light lamps and play music because they think that this will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico they have the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people might eat food in shape of skulls, and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The festival of Halloween had its origin as an event in memory of the dead. It is now a children’s festival, when they can go to their neighbours’ homes and ask for sweets. They dress up and try to frighten people. If they are not given anything, the children might play a trick. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can be held as an honour to famous people or to the gods. One of these is the Dragon Boat Festival in China, which honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Yuan. Another is Columbus Day in the USA, in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. In India there is a national festival on October 2 to honour Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter ,and because a season of agricultural work is over. In European countries it is the custom to decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and people get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their animals, flowers, fruits and vegetables, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. In China and Japan there are mid-autumn festivals, when people admire the moon and give gift of mooncakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat, and may give children lucky money in the red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the lunar New Year together. In some Western countries there are very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. They might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of all kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival in Christian countries. It celebrates the return of Jesus for Christians and it also celebrates the coming of spring. In Japan, the Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country is covered with cherry tree flowers so that it looks as though it might be covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each others. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our daily life for a little while.
