New Freedom Tower

The twin towers of the World Trade Center were more than just buildings. They were proof of New York’s belief in itself. They were built when New York’s future seemed uncertain. The towers restored New York’s confidence.

After they were damaged by terrorists, a new building plan by architect Daniel Libeskind was chosen as the plan for the World Trade Center site on Wednesday.

The new building is planned to be 1,776 feet high, taller than the former trade center towers, which stood as the world’s tallest at 1,350 feet. Libesk ind’s tower also would surpass Malaysia’s 1,483-foot Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest buildings in the world.

Libeskind’s design included a hanging garden, a memorial, a cultural center and Freedom Tower. The tower is now planned to cost 2 billion, and be ready for use in 2011. The memorial plans were redesigned in June, 2006. Its construction began in 2006 and the memorial is scheduled to open on Sept. 11, 2009.

The Land of Australia

Wise people tell us that the land of Australia is perhaps the oldest in the world. Yet to us Australia is a new discovered country. However, it is hard to tell who first set foot on this great island.

In those days, it was a great, wide, silent land where there were no towns, or even houses. Only a few black savages wore no clothes and cared for nothing but to eat and drink.

In the seventeenth century, the Dutchmen discovered the land. However, they found it hardly real to live on the land there. They marked this land upon their maps, but they knew little about it.

In 1768, Captain James Cook sailed all along the eastern coast of Australia, a thing which no white man had ever done. He landed in many places, naming capes, bays, and points, as he passed. One great bay he named was Botany Bay, because many plants and flowers were found there.

Then Torres Strait Cook had explored the whole eastern coast of Australia. He set up the British flag and claimed the whole eastern coast with all its bays, harbors, rivers and islands, for King George. And also he gave the name New South Wales to the land.

Neighbor from Hell

Do you have a neighbor who you really hate and try to play tricks on?

JoWood Company developed a computer game to offer you the opportunity to take revenge on the neighbor. In the game, players walk on the apartment, hide arrange traps and giggle.

Players will first find some tools according to the hints. For example, if players move the mouse to a certain place in the neighbor’s f lat, such as a drawer, the cursor will change into the image of hand. Just hit the mouse, players will find a trick tool. If players put the cursor on the tool they find, some notes will appear to tell them how to use it. Then players can make some noisy binges, barking of dogs, the flooded ceilings to make the neighbor crazy.

On the map there are the places, where players can hide. After pressing on the button of act ion, players will hide. As to making the dirty trick, such as putting eggs in his microwave oven, for it takes a certain period of time, players have to follow after the neighbor so that he would be sufficiently far away from them.

Some dirty tricks can be made with naked hands. Cursor during the guidance on them will take the type of hand. After pressing on the key for action, players will get close to this place and will make a dirty trick. Other dirty tricks are done with the aid of the objects they find before. However, you must remember that players will lose their life if they are

caught by the neighbor, thus the quick moving of players makes the game very exciting.

Giorgio Armani

Almost every girl dreams to get an Armani dress. Giorgio Armani, one of the most famous fashion designers, was born on July 11th, 1935 in Piacenza, Italy.

After serving in the Italian military, Armani worked as a buyer in a Milan department store. Putting his fashion knowledge to use, he landed a position designing for Nino Ceruti’s men’s clothing company, the first of three design positions he would have. Armani created his own label, launching his first menswear line in 1974, and a year later, his first line of women swear.

Over the next twenty years, Armani built a fashion empire. Within his simple, elegant designs, he got a large following, particularly in Holley wood. The Armani label expanded over time to include a junior line of underwear, swimwear, accessories, a line of hosiery called Calze, and a line of eyewear called Occhiali.

In 2000, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Armani label, the Guggenheim Museum announced with much fanfare that it would house a self-titled exhibition of Armani’s work. Initially on display in New York City (from October 2000 through January 2001), the Armani collection is currently featured at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.

Schumacher’s Helmet

Michael Schumacher is the world’s present best racing driver.

Michael explains how his helmet’s paint scheme came about:

“From the ar ea of the visor you see the traditional German blackred-gole, I chose the colours years ago with a friend of mine and I changed it only slightly, mostly to include sponsor decals. The blue circle with the white stars on the top was his idea. After joining Ferrari I added the prancing horse on the back.”

Since the European GP in 2000, Michael has raced with a modified helmet design. The blue circle on the top is now painted light red. The white Marlboro stripe around the top is now also red. The change was made to prevent confusion between himself and Barrichello, whose design was confusingly similar.

San Francisco’s

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge, completed after more than four years of construction at a cost of 35 million, is a visitor attraction recongnized around the world. The GGB opened to traffic on May 28,1937 at twelve o’clock noon. The Golden Gate Bridge’s 4200 foot long main suspension span was a world record that stood for 27 years. The bridge’s two towers rise 746 feet making them 191 feet taller than the Washington Monument. The two main cables of the bridge weigh 11000 tons each, and each of them contains 25572 separate wires. The cost of concrete used on the bridge would be enough to build two 10-foot-wide sidewalks from Chicago to Omaha.

The month of December as historically brought the most dangerous winds. Offcials have closed the bridge only three times due to wind, in the December of 1951(69mph winds), 1982(70mph winds), and 1983(75 mph winds). None of the gusts caused structural damage.

Feng Shui Tips: Decorating

in the Bedroom

Feng Shui is the Chinese discipline of arranging living space to best enhance life energy and to help people live the lives they desire. When decorating a bedroom, keep the following principles of Feng Shui in mind.

Remove clutter: Clutter makes it difficult to relax and bedrooms are meant for relaxing. If you have several small items you must keep handy on your nightstand, collect them in a drawer or a box.

Object and activities:Bedrooms are places of calming and romantic. Thus, items that connect with negative events should not be displayed in bedrooms, such as a wartime memento, though they may be very beautiful or valuable. Some romantic artwork or flowers, candles and paired objects should be put in bedrooms.

It you have difficulty sleeping, try removing all other activities from the bedroom. Read,

write, and chat in other areas of the house.

The bed: The bed is the necessary item in every bedroom. Make sure that the door can be seen from the bed so there is a smooth flow of energy from the room’s entrance to the bed. The bed is best put across the room from the door. Do not store items undermeath the bed. A clear space under the bed promotes better rest.

Mirrors and other furniture:A round mirror is a wise choice in a

bedroom. It means unity and completion. A mirror should be placed directly opposite a bed. Also, if the door cannot be seen from the bed , a mirror should e placed to make it visible. Tall objects move energy upward, If column-like items must be in the room, place them against walls around the edges of the room.

Lighting: Bedroom lighting should not be too bright. Make sure lights are not too dim either.

Instrument

Violin, String Instrument

The four major instruments in the family, the violin, the viola, the cello and the double bass, are built the same way. The instruments are made of many pieces of wood which are glued-never nailed-together. Four strings (sometimes five on the double-bass)are made of animal gut, nylon, or steel. The violin is held under the chin, testing on the shoulder. The violin has a lovely tone that can be soft and expressive or exciting.

Piano, Keyboard Instrumen t

Keyboard instruments are often regarded as percussion instruments because they play a rhythmic role in some music. However, most keyboard instruments are not true members of the percussion family because their sound is not produced by the vibration of a membrane or solid material. Sound is produced on the piano by small hammers striking strings. The hammers are controlled when the player’s hands press the piano keys. Triangle, Percussion Instrument

Instruments in the percussion family are played by being struck, shaken, or scraped. In the orchestra, the percussion section provides a variety of rhythms. Percussion instruments are classified as tuned or untuned. The percussion instruments are an international family, with ancestors from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe representing musical styles from many different cultures.

The triangle is made from a small round steel tube, and ia played by striking it with a steel beater. Its bright shimmering sound is untuned and just like the sound of a bell. The triangle first joined the orchestra in the late 1700s.

Vitamin C and DNA

Millions of people take large amounts of Vitamin C pills every day because they believe the vitamin will help them stay healthy. However, a new study

says Vitamin C may help produce substances that can damage DNA.

Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania studied the effects of Vitamin C on a substance produced in the body from fat. That substance is called hydroperoxide. The hydroperoxide can be changed into substances that can damage DNA. The scientists found that Vitamin C easily changed the hydroperoxide into the gene-damaging poisons. Such damage is the first step toward developing cancel. However, the scientists said the study does not mean that Vitamin C causes cancer.

But they said people should probably reconsider taking large amounts of Vitamin C pills each day. They say it is well known that Vitamin C is important to human health. But they say people an get enough Vitamin C in the foods they eat. Earlier studies have shown that eating a lot of fruits, vegetables and grains can reduce the chance of developing both heart disease and cancer.

However, the study did not involve people. The Vitamin C was tested in the laboratory only. The results might be different in living cells.

Anyway people should get Vitamin C food instead of taking huge amounts in pills to stay healthy.

The United States government says people should get about eighty milligrams of Vitamin C each day in the foods they eat. The body cannot use more than two-hundred milligrams of Vitamin C and Vitamin C pills cannot replace the value of eating health foods.

3a 1.Receiving money might make people feel

U n i t3A h e a l t h y l i f e Ⅰ. Warming up, Pre-reading, Reading and Comprehending 部分。Warming up部分主要围绕健康问题展开讨论,并提供了几个有关健康的话题(cigarette smoking/Drinking alcohol/Drug taking/Physical fitness/Sexual health/Stress),同时展示了几张图片,使学生能联想现实中的健康话题,更好引入阅读。 III.

Unit 3 On Reading

Unit 3 On Reading 1.
