My bike was a three-speed English “racer”, purchased during my second year in college in November 1964 for $44. Most of the money was earned by myself in my spare time, but I had to get my mother to help me out a little. At that time, bikes were rare on a college campus. My reason for getting a bicycle was a little strange.

A friend of mine convinced me to take a summer job selling door-to-door and suggested that I should use a bicycle to travel between houses. The job didn’t work out, but the idea was in my brain.

That fall, I borrowed another student’s bike and rode 45 miles on the first day, but his bike soon had a flat(瘪了的轮胎) which he didn’t like fixing. So I had to buy one. I immediately started using mine almost every day. Before getting the bike, I sometimes walked 28 miles to my parents’ house. Now the bike gave me a quicker method, but my first trip took four hours due to strong headwinds that had me fight for every foot. Once I made a trip of 100 miles in one day. I decided to use the bike to go camping in the Smokies. During the trip, I recognized the need for handlebars and more gears, so I bought a ten-speed after just one year though I loved this bike.

The first bike “hung around” for a couple of years, and then I gave it to my sister’s kids who let it become part of their lives.

Have you ever noticed that some people are able to effortlessly remember even the most boring details, and quickly understand new things, and wished that you too could be like that? To unlock the full potential of your brain, you need to keep it active and acute(敏锐的,敏感的). But how? Check out these tips:

●Exercise&get your body moving

Exercising doesn't just exercise the body; it also helps to exercise your brain. Without regular exercise your blood vessels (血管)begin to lose the ability to effectively pump blood and it also reduces the amount of oxygen and nutrients(养分)that your blood carries to your brain. When the nutrients don't make it there, the brains ability to function is weakened. To prevent this from happening, make sure you get moving every day. Walking, swimming and dancing are all excellent activities.

●Get rid of stresses and seek help for depression

Among the most brain-damaging stresses is severe depression, which is actually often mistaken for a memory problem since one of its primary symptoms is the inability to concentrate. If you can't concentrate, yon might feel like you are constantly forgetting things. Depression increases the levels of cortisol(氢化可的松)in your brain, which affects your memory. Seek professional help to get rid of your depression一your brain will thank you.

●Feed you brain

50 to 60 percent of the brain's overall weight is pure fat, which is used to insulate(隔离)its billions of nerve cells. The better insulated a cell is, the quicker you will be thinking. This is exactly why parents are advised to feed their young children whole milk. Thus eating foods that contain a healthy mix of fats is vital for long-term memory. Some excellent food choices include fish and dark leafy green vegetables.

60. According to paragraph 2, what may happen to us if we seldom take exercise?

A. No oxygen comes to our brain.

B. Our brain can’t function well.

C. More nutrients will be carried to brain.

D. More blood will be pumped effectively.

61. The real cause of the inability to focus is .

A. poor memory

B. little exercise

C. serious depression

D. unhealthy eating

62. Why should parents feed their babies whole milk?

A. Because babies' brains need fat to grow and work properly.

B. Because whole milk is very easy for babies to digest.

C. Because no other food is more suitable for babies than milk.

D. Because less than half of the brain's overall weight is pure fat

C

Why do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What’s to blame for all the bad behavior s? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive (自我毁灭的) acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them. According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power that really gets you into trouble.

Think back to the time you took your very first sip (小口) of beer. Disgusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette —it tastes awful. So even though smoking and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (诱惑) that you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.

Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically (讽刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to someday develop a “taste” for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool.

These bad habits aren’t self-control failures —far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.

63. What do most people think causes bad behavior?

A. Being forced by others.

B. Not having enough will power.

C. Enjoying their first experiences.

D. Following the examples of their friends.

64. The author mentions his experience in the Second paragraph to prove ____.

A. will power helps develop bad habits sometimes

B. drinking beer is harmful to the health of teenagers

C. self-control should be developed when one is young

D. everyone can be challenged by different temptations

65. In the last paragraph, the author stresses that ____.

A. without self-control, no one can succeed

B. bad habits don’t always lead to bad results

C. applying self-control correctly is important

D. people can develop wisdom from bad behavior

66. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. My First Sip of Beer

B. Do You Have Will Power ?

C. Will Power Benefits Us

D. Dark Side of Self-control

D

Increasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their symptoms, order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies(药店).Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack health insurance.Or they may stay away because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol consumption(酗酒) or couch potato habits.Patients may also fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctor can also be a deadly game.Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers ---most of them aren't nearly doubtful enough of what they find.A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn't. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding reliable and complete information are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study.Of the l69 websites the researchers rated, only l6 scored as “high quality”.Recent studies found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet.

The problem is that most people don't know the safe way to surf the Web.“They use a search engine 1ike Google, get l8 trillion choices and start clicking. But that's risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative(权威的), so it's hard to know whether what you're reading is reasonable or not,” says Dr.Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.

67.According to the text, an increasing number of Americans .A.are suffering from mental disorders

B.turn to Internet pharmacies for help

68. Some Americans stay away from doctors because they .A.find medical devices easy to operate

B.prefer to be diagnosed online by doctors

C.are afraid to face the truth of their health

D.are afraid to misuse their health insurance

69. According to the study of Brown Medical School .A.more than 6 million Americans distrust doctors

B.only 1/l0 of medical websites aim to make money

C.about l/10 of the websites surveyed are of high quality

D.72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts

70.Which of the following is the author's main argument?

A.It's cheap to se1f-treat your own illness.

B.It's embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.

C.It's reasonable to put up a medical website.

D.It's dangerous to be your own doctor.

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
