If you are a perfectionist, you’re probably familiar with the feeling of wanting to get everything just right.According to researchers, perfectionists hold themselves to unrealistically high standards and become self-critical if they believe they haven’t met these standards.Perfectionists are also likely to feel guilty if they experience failures, which often leads them to avoid situations where they are worried that they might fail.

In one study, researchers looked at how perfectionism changes over time. The researchers reviewed previously collected data from over 41,000 college students. They found that college students reported increasing levels of perfectionism:they helped themselves to higher standards, and felt there were higher expectations placed on them.More importantly, what increased the most was the social expectations that young adults picked up on from the surrounding environment. The researchers assumed that this could be because society is increasingly competitive:college students might pick up on these pressures from their parents and society, which would increase perfectionist tendencies.

Although many people see the pursuit(追求) of excellence as a good thing, researchers have found that in extreme cases, perfectionism is actually linked to poorer mental health. In one study, researchers looked at a total of 284 studies and found that perfectionists felt depressed and anxious and even had eating disorders. They also found that people higher in perfectionism also reported higher levels of overall psychological distress(痛苦).In other words, although people may think of their perfectionism as something that helps them succeed,it appears that their perfectionism may actually be harmful to their mental health.

So,is perfectionism always harmful?Psychologists have debated this point, with some suggesting that there can be such a thing as adaptive perfectionism,in which people hold themselves to high standards without being involved in self-criticism over mistakes they make. However, other psychologists suggest that perfectionism isn’t adaptive:according to these researchers, perfectionism is more than just holding yourself to high standards, and they don’t think perfectionism is beneficial.

Anyhow, although perfectionism is linked to negative outcomes, the good news is that perfectionism is something that can be changed. One possible alternative to perfectionism involves developing what psychologists call a growth mindset. In their opinion,we should believe that our abilities, including intelligence, can be developed with effort and good learning strategies so that we are motivated to work hard and won’t give up when things get challenging.Another potential alternative to perfectionism is to develop self-compassion(自我同情)—that is to say,we should treat ourselves kindly when we make mistakes, remind ourselves that mistakes are part of being

humans, and avoid being consumed with negative emotions.Overall,as long as we take efforts,it’s possible to overcome perfectionism and develop a healthier way of setting goals for ourselves.

We blast the upbeat(快乐的) tunes for parties and workouts at the gym,and we save the low-key ballads for romantic or sad moments. It’s hardly a new idea that music has a close link with our emotions. But how have our favorites changed over the decades, and what do these changes say about America’s shifting emotional landscape?

Music is a form of naturalistic data that, much like popular television and sales of consumer goods, scientists can sample for insight into our minds and values.Researchers E. Glenn Schellenberg and Christian von Scheve set out to examine songs popular in America during the last five decades, hoping to learn how emotional cues in music, such as the tempo (slow to fast) and mode(major or minor key),have changed since 1960.

The most striking finding is the change in the key.Songs composed in a major key tend to

sound warm and high-spirited,whereas songs in a minor key can sound darker and sadder.Over the last few decades, popular songs have switched from major to minor keys.Broadly speaking, the sound has shifted from being bright and happy to something more complicated. It’s important to note, though, that although older songs are frequently in a major key, this doesn’t necessarily mean the lyrics(歌词) are cheerful.

America’s popular songs have also become slower and longer.Even more interesting, perhaps,is that our current favorites are more likely to be emotionally ambiguous, such as sad-sounding songs being fast or happy-sounding songs being slow.

Perhaps, the two researchers suggest, today’s listeners are more musically experienced.Other researchers in the past have linked music preferences to personality traits, such as a preference for sadder music being tied to more empathy(同感),openness to experience, and less human interactions.Schellenberg and von Scheve also suggest that artists may employ minor keys and compose slower songs to give them an air of maturity. After all,it’s children’s music that is usually happy.

There is possibility that the more contemporary music reflects the hardships and tragedies that our society has gone through. However,Schellenberg and von Scheve believe that the phenomenon of steady increase in duration and decrease in tempo doesn’t support the idea of growing difficulties fully because it would mean our problems have increased steadily over the last fifty years.Perhaps popular songs have become more complex over time because Americans are becoming more diverse and individualized in their musical tastes.

Though we can only guess at the specific causes of this evolution in music,we can still view society’s preferences as a measurement of the public consciousness.Schellenberg and von Scheve’s initial observations have only opened the door to inquiries into the link between emotion and music consumption.Perhaps someday we’ll learn more of the secrets behind the music we love and the times we live in.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is giving rise to a future filled with exciting opportunities and new challenges.Together, governments and businesses must find solutions to society’s most pressing needs—from creating a carbon-free economy to dealing with population growth and urbanization.

The environment is a case in point.Much of the public debate has centered on the central role of renewable power sources in realizing a low-carbon energy future. While the industry is fully behind developing renewables,a low or zero-carbon future depends on adopting a multifaceted(多方面的) approach.

We cannot control sunshine levels or decide when the wind blows, which means solar power and wind power generators will produce too much or too little energy at times. The change for renewables requires serious consideration, like overcoming intermittency(间歇性),providing

energy security and balancing economic realities.

Batteries have been much discussed as a means of storing extra energy, but there are alternatives.Power-to-X technologies enable spare energy to be stored and distributed again when and where needed. For example, additional electricity can be captured and turned into hydrogen using electrolysis, which can be used to create methane or ammonia.

Despite the growing importance of renewable energy sources to the world’s power generating capacity, nearly three-quarters of the world’s primary energy demand will still be met by coal, oil and gas by mid-century.To safeguard the future,we need to find new ways of making fossil fuels cleaner and more efficient.Successful tests by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems have shown that putting hydrogen into our fuel sources can dramatically lower CO2emissions from power generation without disturbing generating capacity.

Our ability to meet the world’s future energy needs depends on a group of technologies working together in parallel.E-mobility is a good example of this.Electric cars are certainly a positive innovation.Easing jams, while increasing convenience and sustainability in the future cities, could also depend on air taxis, smart traffic systems and using more fuel-friendly aircraft designs.

Another global problem is the growing amount of domestic and industrial waste. At current growth rates, the human race could generate 11 million tons of solid waste each day by 2100.Waste-to-energy technology generates power from sources like domestic waste and manufacturing processes.

For example, the Iwate-Chubu Clean Centre incinerator(焚化炉) facility in Japan uses Mitsubishi Heavy Industries(MHI) Group’s advanced resource recycling systems. The plant generates electricity by burning waste, producing nontoxic,low-chlorine ash that can be used as filler for concrete.

Remaining heat, which is often wasted during industrial processes, can also be captured and turned into energy.MHI Group company Turboden installs turbines(涡轮机) in industrial plants. The turbines reduce emissions by capturing waste heat, which is changed into electrical energy and also provides heating for the local community.

Globally integrated and diverse engineering can make the world cleaner, safer and more sustainable in a long-term and practical way.Science and its practical applications can uncover solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

We have been told many times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.The danger,it’s regularly claimed,is that skipping breakfast means we’ll get hungry later in the day,eat all the wrong things, and finally put on weight. But is it really true? The answer would seem to be yes,if the results of a study published last week are to be believed.

Researchers found that people who skipped breakfast were 33 per cent more likely to have type 2 diabetes(糖尿病) than those who didn’t.This study adds to lots of others which have compared the health of people who skip breakfast with people who don’t.Almost all of these studies show that breakfast-eaters are slimmer and healthier.

But does this prove that eating breakfast makes you healthier?Well, actually it doesn’t.The fact is that people who regularly eat breakfast tend to have healthier habits overall. They smoke less, drink less and are normally more active. To put it another way,it is possible that having a

healthier lifestyle has an effect on health, rather than the time you choose to start eating.

One of the best ways to test the health claim is to carry out a randomised controlled trial. In a recent study, researchers got together 300 overweight volunteers,a mixture of “breakfast-eaters”and “breakfast-skippers”.They asked the groups to exchange habits for 16 weeks. At the end of that period, both groups were weighed. The breakfast-skippers who had made themselves eat breakfast lost an average of 1.67 pounds.Pretty impressive. However, the breakfast-eaters who had skipped breakfast lost an almost identical amount,an average of 1.56 pounds.

The researchers concluded that, contrary to what is widely believed,a recommendation to eat breakfast had no noticeable effect on weight loss in free-living adults who were attempting to lose weight.

Another widely held belief is that eating breakfast helps to kick-start your metabolism(新陈代谢),making you active for the day ahead. But is this belief based on science?

It is certainly true that when you eat,it sets off the digestive process, which in turn means you burn more energy. The trouble is that the effect is pretty small and wears off when the food is digested. From the point of view of your metabolism over the course of the day,it isn’t really important whether you first eat at 8 am or 1 pm.What you eat is more important than when you eat.Eating a high-protein(蛋白质) breakfast requires more energy to digest it and makes you feel full for longer.

The fact is clear that there is nothing “special” about breakfast. It probably does not matter whether you eat or skip breakfast,as long as you eat healthily for the rest of the day.

The defense mechanisms(防御机制) are used in order to escape unpleasant emotional or

psychological states. For example,a middle-aged man who experiences anger or frustration may be unable to express it normally,so he represses(压抑) it or projects it onto someone else.Life is difficult and such defenses help to cope.Indeed, for many, life would be unbearable without them.

When it comes to the defenses themselves,a few general points need to be made.First, people employ defense mechanisms often because they cannot rid themselves of the negative emotional state in a healthy, natural way.Second, most of the defense mechanisms also involve the distortion(歪曲) of reality. When someone represses or denies something, for example, they ignore some feelings or some aspects of the environment. Finally, people aren’t usually aware of what they’re doing.

Generally, the most common defense mechanism is repression. It involves the selective forgetting of material that results in sufferings. The nature of this material naturally depends on the individual. In general, though,it usually involves some kind of conflict or stress.First,it must be emphasized that selective forgetting isn’t the same as the loss of memory that occurs as people age.The individual removes conflict and stress from consciousness (and things associated with them) because they are painful to recall.Second, this material isn’t permanently deleted but is instead stored in the unconscious.

Then comes projection. It is a very common, and sometimes very dangerous, form of defense. When someone projects something, they owe a motivation, fear,or personality trait to someone else. This is usually something they dislike in themselves. Some people are conscious that they possess some quality but they then owe it to others—often someone respected or admired. For example,a frightened soldier may accuse his commanding officer of being a coward to lessen the shame he feels about his own fear. There are also some people who tend to owe the cause of a feeling or character trait to someone else. For example,a girl who hates school may refuse to go because, she claims, her teacher is a bad bully. The dangers of projection should be obvious.A great deal of unjustified violence and cruelty can follow from it.

Displacement is also a common form of defense. There are two different forms of displacement. One is “object displacement”,in which an individual feels a strong emotion towards one person but vents(发泄) the emotion on someone else. The other one is “drive displacement”,in which someone redirects the energy associated with one feeling into a different feeling. So,in object displacement it is the object that changes, while in drive displacement the object remains the same but the feeling changes.

Jealousy(忌妒) can be seen as a person’s fears for and anxieties over the attention that they think is being given to or received by the one who is dear and important to them.

Most people experience the natural feeling of jealousy at some point in their lives. Some people feel it more strongly than others and some even suffer from the feeling to the extent that jealousy starts consuming them.In some cases the feeling is justified but in others it is not.Frankly speaking, jealousy is a poisonous emotion, both for the person experiencing it and for their families and friends.

Jealousy is usually considered as a single, independent emotion, but in reality it is a whole bundle of feelings that interconnect with each other such as anger, fear, hurt, betrayal, anxiety, mania, sadness, agitation, depression, loneliness, envy, feeling powerless, feeling excluded and

After completing the questionnaire, users receive a mobile phone message. It includes a color-based QR Code that relates to the health situation they described. Users with a red code are told to quarantine themselves for 14 days and continue reporting their condition by using Alibaba’s DingTalk messaging app. Users with a yellow code are told to stay in quarantine for 7 days, while those with a green code can travel freely. Chinese state media said the Alibaba system would be deployed at train stations, along major roads and other travel checkpoints. They added that the system is also being used in some neighborhoods. People are asked to show QR Codes when entering their apartment buildings. Customers are asked to do the same before entering the local supermarket. Alipay said it was working with the government to expand the system nationwide. Tencent, which operates China’s popular messaging app WeChat, reported the launch of a similar QR Code-based tracking system. Tencent developed the system with help from China’s National Development and Reform Council, which is currently in use in the southern city of Shenzhen. Officials said they expected it to be deployed to other parts of Guangdong province soon. Even before the latest systems were announced, many Chinese were already using mapping and travel apps in an effort to avoid areas with coronavirus infections. One of the apps, developed by WeChat, uses official reports to identify places in the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou where coronavirus cases have been confirmed.
