What Can We Learn from Art?

(1)politics,economics and war

讲中提到“most typical history courses concentrate on Politics, economics and war”,这里的“typical”与题干中的“general”属于同义复述,因此直接提取答案politics, economics and war。

(2)civilization

讲座提到该研究的意义是提到“enables us to learn more things about human society and civilization”,所以该研究能够使我们更多的了解人类社会和文明,故应填入civilization。

(3)objective

(4)subjective

上文提到历史书中的信息是客观的(objective),而“Art,on the other hand, is subjective”,所以艺术则是主观的。

(5)personal emotions

(6)Spanish

在举例说明中提到“Francisco Goya was a great Spanish painter”,所以这里指的是西班牙画家,接着提到“His description of soldiers and their victims has become a symbol of the enormous power or the misuse of this power that the

government can have over its people”,所以misuse of governmental power是Spanish painters’works包含的内容。

(7)social problems

讲座中提到“Over100years later,on another continent, the powerful paintings of Mexican artists depicted their deep anger and sadness about social problems”,所以墨西哥艺术作品中包括对社会问题的态度。

(8)the Bible

讲座中提到“Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that showed people and stories from the Bible.”(在教堂和其他宗教建筑物中的画像上到处都是来自《圣经》的人物和故事)”。因此将原句中的people and stories from the Bible简化为the Bible。

(9)animal images

讲座中提到“…its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that these images are unholy.”

后半句的“these images”指代的就是前句的“human and animal images”。

(10)the Gods

第四段后半部分,演讲者又介绍了非洲和太平洋群岛地区对传统艺术目的的看法,提到“...that is gods to enter people’s lives. Each…to make sure that crops, animals and people are healthy and increasing in number.”

(11)culture background

讲座中提到“Similarly, the way that people view art also depends on their cultural background.”

(12)decoration

讲座中明确提到“For most Europeans and Americans, art is mainly for decoration.”

(13)practical

演讲者提到“It has a

function,it has a practical role to play in people’s lives”可见,艺术具有实用功能。答案为practical。

(14)influence/interaction

(15)urbanization

倒数第二段第三句提到“As people from tribal societies move to urban areas, their values and beliefs change accordingly…”

What Can We Learn from Art?

Good morning, today’s lecture is the very first of a series of lectures on art history,so I’d like to spend some time discussing with you the following topic:Why do we need to study art history? And what can we learn from it?

First of all,I’d say,if you study art history, this might be a good way to learn more about a culture than it’s possible to learn in general history classes.[1]You know, most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics and war,but art history focuses on much more than this.Because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also their religious beliefs, emotions etc.In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors can be provided by art, like what people did for a living, what kind of dress they wore, what ceremonies they held etc.[2]In short, art can express the essential qualities of a time and a place, and the study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than can be found in most history books and enables us to learn more things about human society and civilization.

The second point I’d like to make is about the type of information.[3]In history books, information is objective, that is facts about political economic life of a country are given, but opinions are not expressed.[4]Art,on the other hand,is subjective.[5]It reflects personal emotions and opinions. For example,[6]Francisco Goya was a great Spanish painter and also perhaps the first truly political artist. In his famous painting,The Third of May1808,he showed soldiers shooting a group

The first generation museums of sciences are those devoted to natural history, which show through fossils and specimens the evolutionary changes of the earth and organisms. Those of the second generation are museums of industrial technology exhibiting achievements made in various periods of the industrial age. These two types of museums, while functioning as disseminators of scientific knowledge, treat their visitors as mere viewers. Science museums of the third generation are entirely different from their predecessors. They stress visitor participation, encouraging those interested to make detailed study of the exhibits on their own by trying their hands on them. The experience so gained will enable them to understand advanced technologies better and help them in their quest for what is still unknown in science 1 In his later years (Late in his life), Qiao Yu has become enamored of fishing (developed a penchant / special fondness for fishing). American literary historians are perhaps prone to view their own national scene too narrowly, mistaking prominence for uniqueness. They do over-phrase their own literature, or certainly its minor figures. And Americans do swing from aggressive over phrase of their literature to an equally unfortunate, imitative deference. But then, the English themselves are somewhat insular in their literary appraisals. Moreover, in fields where they are not pre-eminent — e. g. in painting and music —they too alternate between boasting of native products and copying those of the Continent. How many English paintings try to look as though they were done in Paris; how many times have we read in articles that they really represent an “English tradition” after all. To speak of American literature, then, is not to assert(断言、声称)that it is completely unlike that of Europe. Broadly speaking, America and Europe have kept step(同步). At any given moment(在任何时候) the traveler could find examples in both of the same architecture, the same styles in dress, the same books on the shelves. Ideas have crossed the Atlantic as freely as men and merchandise, though sometimes more slowly. When I refer to American habit, thoughts, etc., I intend some sort of qualification(限制、限定、资格) to precede(领先、超前) the word, for frequently the difference between America and Europe (especially England) will be one of degree(唯一只是在程度上), sometimes only of a small degree. The amount of divergence(分歧、差异) is a subtle (微妙的)affair, liable(有可能的) to perplex the Englishman when he looks at America. He is looking at a country which in important senses (重要的感觉)grew out of his own, which in several ways still resembles his own — and which is yet a foreign country. There are odd overlappings and abrupt unfamiliarities; kinship(亲缘关系) yields to a sudden alienation(疏远关系), as when we hail(打招呼) a person across the street, only to discover from his blank(没有表情的) response that we have mistaken a stranger for a friend.
