When I started teaching in school, I was sure I could change the world and touch children who needed love.

Although most of my students seemed to respond pretty well to my teaching, there was a small group of teenage girls who become more and more hostile (敌意)towards me.

One day a fight happened in my classroom. Trying to stop it, I stepped in to face one of those hostile young women, who started hitting me in the face. Two boys jumped up to control the girl, but the injury was done.

While the girl was suspended (停课)for a few days, I was determined that she would never return to my classroom. But I also prayed. I wanted to see all the students right there in my daily work at school.

On the top of my daily teaching-plan book, I wrote this statement, “To see all the children in my classroom as always beautiful.” It was the first thing in my heart of any anger towards the girl.

After her suspensio n, she returned to my classroom. I learned the student’s young mother was trying to raise six children while her husband died in the war overseas(海外). The mother and I agreed to work together to help her eldest daughter.

There were no more incidents of anger the rest of the year. In fact, in the following seven years I was still working at that school, I taught all six of this family’s children. When the youngest child was in my class, the mother told me, “Our family loves you. Every year one of my kids says, “I hope I’m in her classroom!’”

The standard of seeing each of my students as perfect was the best teaching tool

Beach volleyball (沙滩排球)is one of those sports that can be an exciting game to play and watch. I t’s really easy, and all you need is sand, a net and a group of people, of any age or fitness level, who want to have fun.

Beach volleyball can be played with as few as two people in each team, making a total of four people. However, if you are less skilled and experienced in the game, it will be easier to play with a larger team. The more players you have, the less ground each person will be responsible for covering and the more time they will have to recover between shots. If you only have a few players, each of you will get a lot of running for the ball after each volley (截球). If you are looking for a relaxing, fun, low-key experience, choose larger teams.

Beach volleyball is similar to regular volleyball in its rules. However, even experienced volleyball players do not realize how much more difficult it is to run and jump on sand. Since it is harder to move quickly on sand than a hard surface, play will be much slower than regular volleyball on a court. When an athlete trains for beach volleyball, he will focus on building lower body strength(力量)as well as upper body strength. Strengthening his legs is extremely important. This improves the player’s ability to move quickly and accurately on sand despite the resistance. The ability to jump high and land without injury is necessary for beach volleyball players.

Whether you are in it for the competition, or just to have a great time with your friends, beach volleyball can be extremely exciting and fun. You may start out

with friends and may soon fall in love with the sport.

31. When playing beach volleyball, in which of the following situation will you feel

D. the rules of beach volleyball are the same as those of regular volleyball

33. Why is playing beach volleyball much slower than playing regular volleyball?

A. Because it is not easy to move on sand.

B. Because beach volleyball has a larger court.

C. Because the teams of beach volleyball are larger.

D. Because beach volleyball players are not experienced.

34. What does the author think of beach volleyball?

John and Bobby joined a wholesale company together just after graduation from

college the same year. Both worked very hard. After several years, however, the boss

promoted (晋升; 提拔)Bobby to the position of manager but John remained an ordinary

employee. John could not take it anymore, handed his resignation(辞呈)to the boss

and complained the boss did not know how to delegate and did not value hard working

staff, but only promoted those who flattered (阿谀)him.

The boss knew that John worked very hard for the years. He thought for a

moment and said, "Thank you for your criticism, but I have a request. I hope you

will do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you will change

your mind and take back your resignation."

John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out anyone selling watermelon

in the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found out a man selling watermelon. The boss asked how much per kg? John shook his head and went back to

the market to ask and returned to inform the boss $1.2 per kg.

Boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office.

John was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Bobby. He decided not to resign but to learn from Bobby.

The story tells us that a more successful person is more observant(善于观察), thinks more and explores in depth. Chances exist in the daily details. For the same matter, a more successful person sees more and farther so that he can find out an opportunity and catch it to realize his aim. If a person sees one year ahead, while another sees only tomorrow. The difference between a year and a day is 365 times, how could you win?

When a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal(信号).

Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.

Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for instance, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs (咕噜咕噜) when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

But human beings have something that no animal has a large number of words which have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind (提醒)ourselves of the things that have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No animals have the wonderful power of language.

No one knows how man learned to make words. Somehow he learned to make them. As centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language. People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we don not know all these. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.
