Questions 51 ~ 55 are based on the following passage.

It seems to me that British newspapers aren't really newspapers at all. They contain news, it is true, but much of this news only appears in print because it is guaranteed to shock, surprise or cause a chuckle ?

What should we expect to find in a real newspaper? Interesting political articles? Accurate reports of what has been happening in distant corners of the world? The latest news from the stock exchange? Full coverage of great sporting events? In depth interviews with leading personalities?

It is a sad fact that in Britain the real newspapers, the ones that report facts, sell in thousands, while the popular papers that set out to shock or amuse have a circulation(发彳亍量)of several million. One's inescapable conclusion is that the vast majority of British readers do not really want a proper newspaper at all. They just want a few pages of entertainment.

I buy the same newspaper every day. In this paper political matters, both British and foreign, are covered in full. The editorial column may support government policy on one issue and oppose it on another? There is a full page of book reviews and another devoted to the latest happenings in the theatre, the cinema and the world of art. Stock exchange prices are quoted daily. So are the exchange rates of the worlds major currencies(货币).The sports coiTespondents(记者)are among the best in the country, while the standard of the readers1 letters is absolutely first class. If an intelligent person were to find a copy of this paper 50 years from now, he or she would still find it entertaining, interesting and instructive ?

50my favourite newspaper is obviously very different from those popular that have circulation of several million. But that does not mean that it is "better" or that they are H worse u. We are not comparing like with like. A publisher printing a newspaper with a circulation of several million is running a highly successful commercial ope ratio n. Questions 56 ~ 60 are based on the following passage.

It is my honor to introduce again a yearly report of the work of Our Lad/s Hospice. Our Lady's Hospice, the first of its kind in these western islands, has entered the second century of caring for those with terminal illness. It was first opened in Milltown and its opening was the realization of a long cherished dream. For years people had longed for a place where poor, lonely, friendless dying persons——no longer fit subjects for hospital wards—- could find care, comfort and peacefulness in their last days of life. In December 1879 these hopes were realized when Our Lady's formally welcomed the first patients 一-35 in number.

So great were the applications for admission that six years later the foundation stone of the present Hospice was laid on 18th July 1886 and completed in August 1888.

Much has been written about the spirit of the Hospice and much will continue to be written with present increasing interest in the Hospice movement. Yet it is difficult to capture a spirit in words. Over a hundred years ago Our Lady's Hospice was opened in spirit that regarded neither race, nor belief, nor class but looked simply to the need of the person for help and for peace in the last days of life. We hope the same spirit born out of love, care and respect for the dignity and worth of each human person, will comfort all, both patients and their loved ones, who seek our help in the Hospice today.

There are two types of twins: identical and non-identical twins. Identical twins are formed from a single egg in the mother's body, which divides to form separate babies? Identical twins look the same , and are often dressed by their parents in clothes of the same colours? It is often difficult to tell identical twins from each other, even when they are standi ng side by side. Non-identical twins come into being when the mother produces two separate eggs at the same time, both of which grow to form babies? In this case the twins look like normal brothers and sisters and are easy to tell one from the other.

In the 1970s and 1980s a scientist did some research into twins in the USA? He invited many pairs of identical twins to university and asked them to take part in a week of tests. He was particularly interested in adopted^攵养)twins who had been separated at birth. He would give the twins different kinds of tests to study their speed of thinking, their speech, their memory, the ways they saw and heard different things, and so on. Time and time again he found separated twins who preferred clothes of the same colour, used

the same kind of shaving soap, wore the same shaped square glasses and the same coloured socks?

Never use a word unless you are sure of its meaning. If you are not sure, look up the word in the dictionary. As you prepare your speeches, ask yourself constantly, “What do I really want to say? What do I really mean?”Choose words that are precise and accurate. Using language clearly allows listeners to grasp your meaning immediately. His Politeness Is Her Powerlessness Deborah Tannen There are many different kinds of evidence that women and men are judged differently even if they talk the same way. This tendency makes mischief in discussions of women, men and power. If a linguistic strategy is used by a woman, it is seen as powerless; if it is used by a man, it is seen as powerful. Often, the labeling of “women?s language” as “powerless language” reflects the view of wo men?s behavior through the lens of men?s. Because they are not struggling to be one-up, women often find themselves framed as one-down. Any situation is ripe for misinterpretation. This ambiguity accounts for much misinterpretation by experts as well as nonexperts, by which women?s ways of thinking, uttered in a spirit of rapport, are branded powerless.Nowhere is this inherent ambiguity clearer than in a brief comment in a newspaper article in which a couple, both psychologists, were jointly interviewed. The journalist asked them the meaning of “being very polite.” The two experts responded simultaneou sly, giving different answers. The man said, “Subservience.” The woman said, “Sensitivity.” Both experts were right, but each was describing the view of a different gender. Experts and nonexperts alike tend to see anything women do as evidence of powerlessness. The same newspaper article quotes another psychologist as saying, “A man might ask a woman, …Will you please go to the store?? where a woman might say, …Gee, I really need a few things from the store, but I?m so tired.?” The woman?s style is called “covert,” a term suggesting negative qua lities like being “sneaky” and “underhanded.” The reason offered for this is power. The woman doesn?t feel she has the right to ask directly. Granted, women have lower status than men in our American society. But this is not necessarily why they prefer not to make outright demands. The explanation for a woman?s indirectness could just as well be her seeking connection. If you get your way as a result of having demanded it, the payoff is satisfying in terms of status: You?re one-up because others are doing as you told them. But if you get your way because others happened to want the same thing, or because they offered freely, the payoff is rapport. You?re neither one-up nor one-down by being

You will probably use two kinds of outlines for your speeches--the detailed preparation outline and the brief speaking outline. In a preparation outline, you should state your specific purpose and central idea, and identify main points and sub--points using a consistent pattern. The speaking outline should consist of brief notes to help you while you deliver the speech. It should contain key words or phrases to bolster your memory. In making up your speaking outline, follow the same visual framework used in your preparation outline. Keep the speaking outline as brief as possible and be sure it is plainly legible. Before you deliver an academic speech, you should, first of al, get well prepared for it.
