A

We can express thoughts and feelings and send sounds and pictures on our smart phones today. We can also communicate by using programs like Skype and Face Time.We can’t send tastes, smells or touch,of course. But scientists in Britain are trying to develop a way for smart phones to do just that.

Adrian David Cheok is a professor at City University in London. He wants people to experience communication using all of their senses. He said,“In the real world,we can open up the glass, open the window. We can touch,we can taste,we can smell in the real world.”

To give users a sense of taste, researchers designed two electrodes(电极) that are placed on the tongue.A chemical process creates different tastes through molecules(微粒) on the surface of the tongue. This chemical process sends electrical signals that convince the brain that a person is tasting something. They have already created sour, salty, sweet and bitter tastes.

“You put these two silver electrodes in your mouth, you put your tongue in between and then it stimulates electrically your tongue and you get a virtual taste perception in your brain.”

A device(设备) called “Scentee” permits users to have the sense of smell.Scentee plugs into a smart phone and can spray tiny clouds of fragrances, including flowers, fruits and coffee.Professor Cheok says the person speaking can activate the device.

Scentee holds a container with about 100 different smells. The container must be replaced when all the scents (pleasant smells) run out.

Joey Moreland awoke in his hotel bed in Boston a few minutes before noon.He had slept deeply, partly because he had been exhausted by the time he’d gotten to bed,but also because he’d taken care of some of the things that had been worrying him.He had received Kelly’s text message when he was on his way to her apartment. He had told her exactly what to do.As soon as she heard his car approaching the apartment building, she should run for it.

When he had pulled to the roadside in front of the apartment she started her dash toward the front door.He could see her through the glass. Then she was in the car and he was making a rapid series of turns to end up on Interstate 95 and heading south. It had taken him a few minutes to get Kelly to explain what had happened. She kept crying, and gasped whenever she talked.

The man who had come to see her had terrified her.He had been telling her about every girl Joey Moreland had been with in about three years, and how he had needed to leave them behind after a job.Who was this guy?If he had tracked down Moreland in three states and across the country,he could be the FBI.

Moreland couldn’t have that.He couldn’t have Kelly suddenly realize that the man couldn’t have pictures of all those dead girls unless they were real.He couldn’t have Kelly, who

was, too, five ten, with fiery red hair two feet long, tell the cops anything about him.He had to hang around Boston long enough to kill Salazar,or the people who had paid for Salazar’s life would take his instead.

So,in the end, having thought about it,and about Kelly,he’d had to kill her. He’d driven the highway south of the city and then had stopped at the edge of a field. He told her he had stopped on the way to pick up an emergency kit he had hidden in the field,so they could leave town together. He had expected to get her to get through the hole in the chain-link fence. She would feel like she was accomplishing something, and that on the other side of that dark place was going to be light and warmth and safety.

But she hadn’t been stupid enough. She had started to cry harder, saying “Please”.He’d had to shoot her.He would have liked to leave Boston now that Kelly was dead. Her death had deprived(夺走) him of a place to live where nobody knew him and there was no record that he had been there. Now that he had checked into a hotel, that advantage was gone.He had used a false name and credit card, but he had not been able to stay completely invisible.

He had to stay in Boston and finish his job,and he couldn’t rush things by even a minute.Salazar was going to arrive in town today, check into his hotel, and then appear at City Hall at three o’clock. He wasn’t going to stick his head out sooner just because Joey Moreland wanted to.

Joey was anxious. There was a kind of cop or private detective hunting for him now and that was a big worry. He had always been careful never to draw the attention of cops and people like them.He had thought of staying with the girls as leaving no track, but apparently the girls were his track.

He wished he could leave now,but if he didn’t kill Salazar here,he would have to go and get him in Mexico, and that was probably impossible for him.He spoke no Spanish and looked like an American.Besides,he would have to transport his own weapons across a border.

Moreland had to go through with his original plan.He would reassure(使……安心) himself by spending the rest of his time planning everything about the killing and the consequence that he had not already planned and prepared.

4.From Kelly’s text message,Joey Moreland probably sensed that .

A.she did not love him at all

B.his plan was given away

C.danger was approaching him

D.she wouldn’t be fooled by him anymore

根据第一段内容可知,Kelly的短信让Joey Moreland感到很焦虑,而第二段的描述“...she started her dash toward the front door...he was making a rapid series of turns to end up on Interstate 95 and heading south.”

5.The purpose of his journey to Boston was .

A.to get away from his enemies

B.to commit a murder

C.to fool and then kill Kelly

D.to escape being followed

根据第四段的“He had to hang around Boston long enough to kill Salazar...”

6.What does the underlined sentence “he had needed to leave them behind after a job”in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.He forced them to look for a job.

B.He didn’t give them money any more.

C.He deserted them and went away when he found a new job.

D.He had to let them disappear forever after his plan was completed.

7.Which of the following Joey Moreland thought had revealed his identity?

A.The girls he had been with.

B.The hotel he had checked into.

C.His false name and credit card.

D.The betrayal of the girls.

答案 A

根据倒数第三段最后一句“He had thought of staying with the girls as leaving no track, but apparently the girls were his track.” 所以选A。

8.Which of the following is the correct order of the things that had happened?

a.Joey Moreland checked into a hotel.

b.Kelly sent a text message to Joey Moreland.

c.Joey Moreland killed Kelly.

d.Kelly found out some of Joey Moreland’s past.

e.Joey Moreland came to Boston.

f.Joey Moreland took Kelly away from the apartment in a car.

A.e,b,c,f,d,a B.e,d,b,f,c,a

C.d,c,a,b,f,e D.e,d,a,b,f,c

So bitter a dark winter day in 1942 was no different from any other day in this concentration camp.I was almost dead, surviving from day to day, since I was brought here with thousands of other Jews. Each day,as more disappeared, the hungry past seemed like a mere dream, and I sank deeper and deeper into despair.

Suddenly,I noticed a young girl,on the other side of the barbed wire, stopped and looked at me with sad eyes seeming to say that she understood. Then she reached into her pocket, and pulled out a red apple. She looked cautiously to the left and the right and then with smile of triumph quickly threw the apple over the fence.I ran to pick it up,holding it in my trembling frozen fingers. Her eyes twinkled. In my world of death this apple was an expression of life,of love.

She came at the same time to the spot the next day.And again she brought me an apple flying it over the fence with that same sweet smile. For seven months we met like this.Sometimes we exchanged a few words, sometimes just an apple. But one day I could barely speak as I said what must be said,“Don’t bring me an apple tomorrow.I am being sent to another camp.” Turning before I lost all my control,I run away and I couldn’t stand looking back.

With months passing and nightmares continuing, the memory of this girl sustained me through the hopelessness.Over and over in my mind,I saw her face, her kind eyes,I heard her gentle words,I tasted those apples. And then the war ended and I was freed.I lost everything that was precious to me including my family.

But I still had the memory of this girl,a memory I carried in my heart and gave me the will to

go on as I moved to America to start a new life.In the New York City a friend convinced me to go on a blind date with a girl named Roma.Reluctantly,I agreed.

“Where were you during the war?” Roma asked me gently.

“I was in a concentration camp in Germany,” I replied.

Roma got a faraway look in her eyes,as if she was remembering something bitter-sweet.

“What is it?” I asked.

Roma explained in a soft voice,“You see, when I was a young girl I lived near a concentration camp, where I used to visit a boy prisoner every day bringing him apples.I would throw the apple over the fence and he would be so happy.”

Roma sighed heavily and continued,“It is hard to describe how we felt about each other—after all we were young and we only exchanged a few words—but I can tell there was much love there. But I cannot bear thinking that he was killed, and I try to remember him as he was for those months we were given together.”

With my heart pounding so loudly,I looked directly at Roma and asked,“And did he tell you not to bring an apple tomorrow because he was sent to another camp?”

“How on earth could you possibly know that?”

I took her hands in mine and answered,“Because I was that boy,Roma.”

For many moments, there was only silence. We could not take our eyes from each other, behind which,as the veils of time lifted,we recognized the soul. Finally,I said,“Roma,I don’t ever want to be separated from you again. Now I am free, and I want to be together with you forever.Dear, will you marry me?” I saw the same twinkle in her eyes that I used to see as Roma said yes.

On Valentine’s Day,1996,I brought Roma to the Oprah Winfrey Show because I wanted to tell her on this national program what I felt in my heart every day:“Darling, you fed me in the concentration camp when I was hungry. And I am still hungry, for something I will never get enough of:your love.”

9.Which of the following can describe the feeling of the author when he recognized the girl? A.Bitter but grateful.

B.Embarrassed but hopeful.

C.Surprised and joyous.

D.Depressed but determined.

10.What can we conclude from the passage?

A.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.

B.War makes man grow up or sink down.

C.Love frees us of all the weight and pain.

D.Wait is bitter but its fruit is very sweet.

11.What does the underlined phrase “go on a blind date” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.Fall in love.

B.Have an appointment.

C.Get married.

D.Attend a wedding party.

12.Which is the correct order of the following events?

a.A girl stopped and looked at me with sad eyes as if she understood.

b.I could barely speak because I was going to be sent to another camp.

c.More people disappeared in the camp and I sank into further despair.

e.I went on a blind date with a girl and we finally recognized each other.

f.I was freed but lost everything that was precious to me including my family.

A.c,a,b,f,e,d

B.f,e,d,b,a,c

C.c,f,e,b,d,a

D.f,b,c,a,d,e

答案 A

13.The author uses his life experiences to produce a(n) .

A.contrary effect B.illustrative effect

C.logical effect D.abstract effect

答案 A

所以选A。

14.What could be the best title of the passage?

A.A Blind Date in New York

B.Apples Pulling Me Through

C.Days in the Concentration Camp

D.Great Hunger for Your Love

“I never did hate the Yankees(北方佬).All that I hated was the war...” That’s how my great-aunt Bettie began her story.I heard it many times as a child, whenever my family visited Aunt Bettie in the old house in Berryville,Virginia.

Bettie Van Metre had good reason to hate the Civil War.Her brother was killed at Gettysburg, and her husband,James,a Confederate(南方联盟军) officer, was taken prisoner and sent to an unknown prison camp somewhere.

One day in late September,Dick came to Bettie reporting that he had found a wounded Union soldier in a farmhouse half a mile away from the Van Metre home. When talking about her first sight of the man in the blood-spotted blue uniform, she always used the same words.“It was like walking into a nightmare:those awful bandages, that terrible smell.” She went out into the cool air, trying not to be sick at the thought of that smashed right hand, that missing left leg.

The man’s papers Bettie found in the farmhouse showed his identity:Henry Bedell,30 years old.She knew that she should report the presence of this Union officer to the Confederate army, but she wouldn’t.This is how she explained it:“I kept wondering if he had a wife somewhere,

hoping, and not knowing—just as I was.It seemed to me that the only thing that mattered was to get her husband back to her.”

Slowly, patiently, skillfully,Aunt Bettie fanned the spark of life in Henry Bedell.Of drugs or medicines she had almost none. And she was not willing to take any from the few supplies at the Confederate hospital. But she did the best she could with what she had.

The October nights in the valley grew cold. With the help of Dick and his wife, she moved the Union officer at night,to a hidden room above the warm kitchen of her own home. But the next day,Bedell had a high fever.Knowing that she must get help, she went to her family doctor,Graham Osborne.Dr Osborne examined Bedell and said,“There was little hope unless proper medicines could be found.”

“I’ll get them from the Yankees at Harpers Ferry,” Bettie said. The doctor told her that Harpers Ferry was almost 20 miles away.Even if she reached them, the Yankees would never believe her.“I’ll take proof,” Bettie said. She found a blood-spotted paper bearing the official War Department seal.“When I show it,they’ll believe me.”

Early the next morning she set off with a list of medical items. For five hours she drove, stopping only to rest her horse. The sun was almost down when she finally stood before the general at Harpers Ferry. The general listened, but did not believe her.“Madam,” he said,“Bedell’s death was reported to us.”“He’s alive,” Bettie insisted.“But he won’t be much longer unless he has the medicines on that list.”“Well,” the general turned to a junior officer,“see that Mrs Van Metre gets the supplies.”

With the medicines,Bedell gradually recovered.Ten days later he was walking with sticks.“I’d better go back as soon as possible,” Bedell told Bettie. So it was arranged that Dick should help Bettie deliver Bedell to Harpers Ferry in his wagon.Bedell lay down in a box filled with hay,his rifle and sticks beside him.

At Harpers Ferry, the soldiers were amazed when the Union officer with the missing leg rose from his hay-filled box.Bedell told the story to Secretary of War Edwin M.Stanton, who wrote a letter of thanks to Bettie and signed an order to free James Van Metre. It was arranged for Bedell to go with Bettie as she searched for her husband.Records showed that a James Van Metre had been sent to a prison camp in Ohio. Then at Fort Delaware, near the end of the line of prisoner,a tall man stepped out and walked clumsily into Bettie’s arms.Bettie held him, tears streaming down her face. And Henry Bedell, standing by on his sticks, wept, too.

15.What might be Bettie’s tone when she used the underlined sentence to describe the first sight of Henry Bedell?

A.Shocked. B.Desperate.

C.Pessimistic. D.Sympathetic.

答案 A

根据画线句子“It was like walking into a nightmare:those awful bandages,that terrible smell.(就像是进入一个噩梦:那些肮脏的绷带,那么难闻的气味。)” 故选A。

16.Why wouldn’t Bettie report the presence of Bedell to the Confederate army?

A.Because she felt it her responsibility to save soldiers of the Union.

B.Because Bedell was more a suffering human being than an enemy to Bettie.

C.Because she wanted to save Bedell so that her husband could be freed.

D.Because Bedell begged Bettie not to give him away to the Confederate army.

根据第四段中的“I kept wondering if he had a wife somewhere, hoping, and not knowing—just as I was.It seemed to me that the only thing that mattered was to get her husband back to her.”

17.Dr Osborne thought it was of Bettie Van Metre to drive to Harpers Ferry for the medicines.

A.crazy B.kind

C.brave D.smart

答案 A

根据第七段中的“The doctor told her that Harpers Ferry was almost 20 miles away.Even if she reached them, the Yankees would never believe her.” 故选A。

18.Still recovering,Henry Bedell decided to leave as soon as possible mainly because . A.he was eager to return to the Union to fight

B.he could be treated with better medicines back at Harpers Ferry

C.he was concerned about his safety at the Van Metre home

D.he didn’t want to go on putting Bettie in danger

19.Rearrange the following statements in terms of time order.

a.Bettie’s husband was found and freed.

b.Bettie helped deliver Bedell back to Harpers Ferry.

c.Bettie moved Bedell to a safe room in her own house.

d.Bettie drove all the way to Harpers Ferry to get the medicines for Bedell.

e.In spite of being short of medicines,Bettie attended to Bedell with what she had.

A.f,e,c,b,d,a B.f,e,c,d,b,a

C.f,c,e,d,b,a D.f,c,e,b,d,a

20.What message is conveyed through the end of the story?

A.Giving is a reward in itself.

B.Happiness comes from giving.

C.God helps those who help themselves.

D.Help yourself by helping others.

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. B Kettlebells do not hurt people. People do. A kettlebell will get your respect – the easy way or the hard way. Here is the easy way. 1. Get a medical clearance. Get clearance, especially from an orthopedist and a cardiologist. The latter is no joking matter, since kettlebell training can be extremely intense. 2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Find a training area with a non-slippery surface on which you are not afraid to drop a kettlebell. The area must be clear of objects you might trip over – including other kettlebells – or that you might hit with a kettlebell. There should be no people or animals in a radius where you could injure them. 3. Train barefoot or wear shoes with a flat, thin sole and room for the toes to spread. Training barefoot is superior for health and performance reasons. If you must wear shoes, wear Converse Chuck Taylors, Vibram Five Fingers, or similar shoes that have thin soles and do not pinch the toes together. You have sensory receptors on the bottoms of your feet that make you stronger and improve balance and coordination. Wearing traditional shoes diminishes the ability of these receptors to work properly, and therefore inhibits performance and can increase the risk of injury. Go native. 4. Never contest for space with a kettlebell. Do not try to save a rep that has gone wrong. Guide the kettlebell to fall harmlessly, and move out of the way if necessary. And remember, quick feet are happy feet. 5. Practice all safety measures at all times. Respect every kettlebell, even the lightest one. Always use perfect form picking up and setting down a kettlebell. The set is not over until the bell is safely parked.
