Robert Frost was one of America’s greatest poets. He won four Pulitzer Prizes. Many of Frost’s best-loved poems were about the years he spent with his young family on a farm in Derry, New Hampshire. It is a simple, white wooden farm house. It is not unlike other farmhouses of the same age in the area. The grounds are still green and flowery at the end of the summer. Birds sing loudly; insects buzz. Some of trees are the birches (桦树) Frost wrote about.

Robert Frost lived at the Derry farm from 1900 to 1911. Randee Rae Martin is a guide at the Robert Frost Farm. She says Frost decided he would raise chickens. He also owned one cow. The farm was a good place for him to write and fi nd sources for poems. The cow was one of them. “The Cow in Apple Time” is a poem about how the cow decided she liked apples instead of grass. Eating apples caused an effect like people drinking alcohol. The poet says the cow stopped producing milk as a result.

Bill Gleed is park manager of the Robert Frost Farm. He explains that “The Cow in Apple Time” is an example of Robert Frost's poetic fooling. He said Frost’s cow did go dry, but not because of eating apples. He said Frost kept writing poems late into night. He did not milk her until the middle of the day. And that is really why her milk went dry.

Robert Frost lived most of his life in Massachusetts. But he said several times the place where he was happiest was the farm in Derry. He wrote in a letter t o a friend, “The core of all my writing was probably the five free years I had on the farm.”

Many people volunteer their time and energy to help others.

The not-for-profit group Habitat for Humanity helps communities with projects like “A Brush with Kindness.” Under this program, people in need can ask for home-improvement services like painting and minor repairs. Habitat volunteers donate both money and labor to the projects. Its volunteers also work in many areas around the world, including Haiti. Thousands of survivors of the Haitian earthquake still live in temporary shelters.

Actor Sean Penn went to Haiti soon after the quake. He provided assistance in a number of ways. Among them, he helped establish the aid agency J/P Haiti. Last month, Sean Penn received the 2014 Peace Summit Award from a group of Nobel Prize-winners.

Organizations do not have to be large to get volunteers. An activist group in Dharamsala, India is a good example. Jodie Underhill from England arrived in northern India several years ago. She planned to volunteer for an environmental project.

Underhill learned about waste control by cleaning up garbage while taking part in other volunteer projects. But soon enough she formed her own group, Mountain Cleaners. She said, “I just decided to start my own thing. We had over a hundred volunteers.” T he young Englishwoman says the Indian media started calling her “Garbage Girl”. And she says she was pleased with the name, not insulted.

The Hawaiian people did not celebrate Christmas before the arrival of Captain Cook in 1778. It was, however, the protestant missionaries (传教士) from New England who first arrived in 1820 that first introduced Christmas to the Hawaiian people.

The missionaries reduced the Hawaiian language to written form, enabling the Hawaiian people to read and write in their own language. Many words for which there were no clear Hawaiian language equivalents (对应) were translated phonetically.

Let’s look at some key phrases that you may hear in Hawaii during the Christmas and New Year’s Day holiday season.

● Mele Kalikimaka—Merry Christmas. The words “Mele Kalikimaka” are a phonetic translation. When the missionaries and other Westerners first brought the custom of Christmas to the islands, the Hawaiians had difficulty pronouncing “Merry Christmas” and turned it into words that rolled more easily off their tongues.

● Hau’oli Makahiki Hou—Happy New Year. The western Christmas and New Year fell during this same time of the year when the Hawaiians traditionally honored the earth for giving them plenty to eat. This period of resting and feasting was called Makahiki (mah-kah-HEE- kee). It lasted for 4 months, and no wars or conflicts were allowed during this time. Because makahiki also means “year”, the Hawaiian phrase for “Happy New Year” became “Hau’oli (happy) Makahiki (year) Hou (new)”.

● Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau’oli Makahiki Hou—Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

● Mahalo Nui Loa—Thank you very much. When you receive a nice gift or are treated to a special meal or beautiful song, you’ll want to express your appreciation for the kindness.

29. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?

A. The Hawaiian people had no written language before 1820.

B. Christmas celebration became popular in Hawaii in 1778.

C. Captain Cook had the greatest influence on the Hawaiian people.

D. The missionaries forced the Hawaiian people to change their language.

30. When someone sings a beautiful song for you in Hawaii, you should say .

A. Mele Kalikimaka

B. Hau’oli Makahiki Hou

C. Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau’oli Makahiki Hou

D. Mahalo Nui Loa

31. Makahiki is a traditional time for the Hawaiian people to .

A. celebrate the New Year

B. show thanks to God

C. show thanks to the earth

D. go for holidays

32. What is the text mainly about?

A. How the Hawaiian people celebrate their holidays.

B. The development of the Hawaiian language.

C. How Christmas was brought to the Hawaiian people.

D. Some phrases used in Hawaii during festivals.

I was having a great morning until I sat down in front of my office computer. “Your password has expired,” a server messa ge flashed on my screen, with instructions for changing it. 第三节:书面表达(满分25分) Dear Miss Zhao,

It has been almost one year since I saw you last time. I miss you very much. Now I’m writing to tell you something about my life here.

I had to get used to a whole new way of life after arriving here, which took up all my concentration in the beginning. In fact, I didn’t understand what my teachers and schoolmates said at all. To improve my English ,I elected to stay in a host family, where I have more chances to learn and practice my English. Now, I had no difficulty communicating with them in English!

English students differ greatly from we Chinese ones in learning. Compared to our students who always copy and remember what the teachers taught, Students in England are encouraged to contradict what their teachers said and have their own opinions. In a word, they are more autonomous learners.

As to the future, I am going to take part in more social activities. Hopefully I will make some new friends and improve my interpersonal skills. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Xie Lei
