The amount of carbon taken in by growing plants increased from 1982 to 1999 as

temperatures rose and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased. But a new study in Friday's edition of the journal Science found a drought-related decline in such plant growth from 2000 to 2009, even though temperatures continued to climb.

As drought caused by warming reduces the land's ability to take in carbon, the result could be more carbon dioxide left in the atmosphere, and thus more warming, Zhao Maosheng from the University of Montana explained in a telephone interview.

―This is a pretty serious warning that warmer temperatures are not going to endl essly improve plant growth,‖co-author Steven Running, also from the University of Montana, said in a statement. ―We see this as a bit of a surprise, and potentially significant on a policy level because previous interpretations(理解、说明)suggested global warming might actually help plant growth around the world,‖he said.

Instead, he and Zhao found a small but measurable decline of about 1%, compared to a 6% increase in the past decade.

Their study, based on the data collected by NASA satellites, found that north areas continued to increase plant growth, thanks to warmer temperatures and a longer growing season.

Someone commented,―This past decade's net decline in earthly productivity suggests that a complex relationship between temperature, rainfall, cloudiness, and carbon dioxide, probably in combination with other factors such as nutrients(营养物)and land management, will determine future patterns and trends in productivity(生产率或生产效率).‖

21.From the first paragraph, we can learn ________ in the recent decade or so.

A.the emission(排放)of carbon hasn't been reduced

B.drought has been causing loss of soil and water

C.carbon dioxide levels have been rising

D.the rise of temperature doesn't promote the plant growth

22.Zhao Maosheng really worried that ________.

A.more and more land will be abandoned

B.the climate becomes warmer and warmer

C.the emission of carbon dioxide increases

D.drought further reduces the number of the plants

23.We can infer from the passage that ________.

A.global warming will determine the future productivity

B.various factors play a key role jointly(联合地、共同地)on future productivity C.earthly productivity actually increased in the past decade

D.temperature rise has had no effect on future productivity patterns

You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is know n as the ―Elevator Guy‖.

―The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪) is sort of odd (奇怪的),‖ Gray told the BBC. ―They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.‖

We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.

He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want –it‘s your own little box.

If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线地)

across from each other to create distance.

When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.

New entrants to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone.

Why are we so awkward in lifts?

―You don‘t have enough space,‖ Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. ―Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm‘s length of distance between us. And that‘s not possible in most elevators.‖In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be construed (理解) as threatening or odd. ―The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,‖ she said.

24.The main purpose of the article is to _____.

A. remind us to enjoy ourselves in the elevator

B. tell us some unwritten rules of elevator etiquette

C. share an interesting but awkward elevator ride

D. analyze what makes people feel awkward in an elevator

25. According to Gray, when people enter an elevator, they usually ___

A. turn around and greet one another

B. look around or examine their phone

C. make eye contact with those in the elevator

D. try to keep a distance from other people

26. Which of the following describes how people usually stand when there are at least two

people in an elevator?

27. The underlined phrase ―size up‖ in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to _____.

A. judge

B. ignore

C. put up with

D. make the best of

C

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.

One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising---and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

28. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?

A. Staying on the farm

B. Moving to the countryside

C. Leaving home for the city

D. Running away from the school

29. Which of the following is true about the writer?

A. He is very old now.

B. He is in good health.

C. He prefers driving a car.

D. He lives in the city now.

30. In the passage, the writer tries to _______.

A. express his opinions about way of life

B. describe his life in the countryside

C. show an interest in the outside world

D. persuade the reader to live in the city

31. How is the passage mainly developed?

A. By inferring

B. By comparing

C. By listing examples

D. By giving explanations

What would it be like to take a walk on the surface of Mars? If you could design the tallest building in the world, what would it look like? Do you dream of being the next J.K.Rowling ? This summer, you can experience all of these things, and more. All you need is an Internet connection and your imagination.

A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that kids spend an average of 1 hour and 29 minutes online each day. Many kids like to use that time to chat with friends, play games or check e-mails. But next time you get on the Web, try exploring the world instead. ―With the Internet, you can go back 11,000 years in time, or go 11,000 kilometers across the planet,‖ said Russell, Web search expert of Google. ―The whole sc ope of history and the world is open to you.‖

There is a wealth of information to be found online. For example, if your family is going on vacation somewhere, do a quick online search on the area before you even get in the car. ―What‘s the background of th e place; what‘s the history?‖ says Russell. ―I like to tell my kids, ?Whenever you have a question, whenever you have a doubt, search it out.‘‖Ready to launch a virtual journey of your own? Here are a few starting points to get you thinking and to help you on your way. You can invite your parents along for the ride, too. Always ask for permission before downloading programs and software into your computer. And, check with a parent or adult before visiting any new website.

Navigate the world in 3-D with Google Earth. Begin in outer space and zoom into the streets of any city, from Hong Kong to San Francisco. Or, visit ancient monuments and watch the changing rainforests over time. With the moon in Google Earth tool, you can walk in Neil Armstrong‘s famous fo otsteps. Take a guided tour of the moon‘s surface with Armstrong‘s fellow shuttle mate astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

32. According to Russell, the kids _____.

A. spend too much time on the Internet

B. should never chat and play games online

C. can solve their problems through the Internet

D. should study hard instead of chatting online

33. According to the passage, if you want to go to Tropical Rainforests, you can _________.

A. take the time shuttle

B. go to the cinema to watch 3-D films

C. find a travel agency in Google

D. use Google Earth

34. The passage is mainly intended for _________.

A. parents

The Ten-minute Break Between Classes

Time seems to be so limited for us senior high school students. Thus, with so much work to do, a great many students are always eager to seize every minute to study in and after class, including the ten-minute break. However, the outcome isn‘t as sa tisfying as expected.

As far as I know, we need the short break, of which the significance can‘t be overlooked. As a matter of fact, the ten-minute break helps us keep a balance between study and relaxation. Short as the break is, we can refresh ourselves and get well prepared for the next class. Thus, there is no need to push ourselves to study even during the short ten-minute break.

Now I‘d like to share with you my ten-minute break activities. During the ten minutes, I will walk out of the classroom, breathe the fresh air, and then make preparations for the next class. Only in this way can I do my work remarkably well.

A Well, parents, surprise! Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to find rides, and not just to school. It’s awkward to call a friend and ask for a ride, and half the time they’ll say, “Sorry, my car is full.” But with Twitter, you just tweet #Ashleys Pool Party and look for other people heading the same way. It may sound risky, but many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter. For me, I only rideshare with people I know, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern. The sharing economy got big during the recession(经济衰退). It allows people to access more goods and services using technology, while also allowing them to share cost. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom. According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license. Today it’s six in ten. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license. All I wanted was an iPhone. Juliet Schor (Sociology professor at Boston College) knows people of my age love being connected and for young people driving means they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit in the passenger side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus. To me, another plus is ridesharing represents something more than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter. 21 The writer usually rideshares with _____. A. anyone heading the same way B. people he knows

When depression strikes, you have to take measures to fight it. One of the strangest ways to fight depression is to eat salt, scientists have found. Salt acts as a natural anti—depressant (抗抑郁剂), researchers say. While too much can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease, not enough can cause “psychological(心理的) d epressions”, a study has reported. The study, by researchers at the University of Iowa in the US, discovered that when rats are deficient in salt, they don’t do activities they normally enjoy. The recommended daily salt intake for an adult is four grams, although experts say the body needs only half as much. However, most adults in the developed world consume(消耗)around ten grams a day, mainly because their diets contain high salt amounts. Today, 77 percent of US salt intake comes from processed and restaurant foods, like frozen dinners and fast food. The minerals in salt are required by the body—in small quantities—to help move liquid in and out of cells. But too much can cause diseases, for example high blood pressure. Today scientists are finding that salt is an addictive substance—almost like a drug. One s ign of addiction is using a substance even when it’s known to be harmful. Many people are told to eat less salt due to health concerns, but they have trouble doing so because they like the taste and find low-salt foods tasteless. Humans have a long histor y of eating salt. In the Stone Age, people didn’t need to find salt, because they hunted most of their food, and ate a lot of red meat, which has plenty of salt in it. But when people began to farm, about 10,000 BC, they started to eat mainly grains like rice and wheat, and very little meat. Then they had to find another way to get salt. 1. Are these just stereotypes(刻板印象) or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail? At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒).__5__ Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green-eyed monster” and the UK is its home. Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money.__6__ Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others— but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this. __7__. But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world's fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either. “It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.” _8__ They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires.__9__ It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them. A. This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain. B. The one who owns most money in the end is the winner.

和诚学校2017---2018年高二英语周练20

和诚学校2019-2019学年高二英语易错题目定时训练(20) 时间:55分钟分值:100分 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)A In my mind, there is a moving story about a skinny young boy who loved football with all his heart. Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. Despite his hard training at all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever played. This teenager lived alone with his father, and the relationship between the two of them was very special. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game. This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him. The young man loved football and was determined to try his best at every practice, and perhaps he’d get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game but remained a benchwarmer. Besides, his faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a “walk-on”. Everyone firmly believed that he could never make the cut, but he did. The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but actually he never got the real chance to play in a game. It was at the end of his senior football season that the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and he became totally silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?” The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.” Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were surprised to see their faithful teammate back so soon. “Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today,” said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close play-off game. But the young man insisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. “All right,” he said. “You can go in.” Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, passed, blocked, and tackled like a star. His team began to succeed. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid got a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. Finally, after the stands had emptied, the coach noticed that this young man was sitting quietly in the corner all alone. The coach came to him and said, “Kid, you were unbelievably fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?”
