As a doctor who travels quite a lot, I spent a lot of time on pla nes listening for that dreaded “Is there a doctor on board?” announ cement. IV. Reading Comprehension (40 points)

Directions : Read carefully the following passage(s) and then answer the questions. (40 points for 20 questions). The following is a sample passage with five sample questions.

Since the dawn of human ingenuity, people have devised ever mor e cunning tools to cope with work that is dangerous, boring, burden some, or just plain nasty. That compulsion has resulted in robotics —the science of conferring various human capabilities on machines. And if scientists have yet to create the mechanical version of sci ence fiction, they have begun to come close. As a result, the moder n world is increasingly populated by intelligent gizmos whose prese nce we barely notice but whose universal existence has removed much human labor.

Our factories hum to the rhythm of robot assembly arms. Our banking is done at automated teller terminals that thank us with mechanical politeness for the transaction. Our subway trains are controlled by tireless robot-drivers. And thanks to the continual miniaturization of electronics and mic ro-mechanics, there are already robot systems that can perform some kinds of brain and bone surgery with sub millimeter accuracy-far g reater precision than highly skilled physicians can achieve with th eir hands alone. But if robots are to reach the next stage of labor saving utility, they will have to operate with less human supervisi on and be able to make at least a few decisions for themselves-goal s that pose a real challenge.

“While we know how to tell a robot to handle a specific err o r,” says Dave Lavery, manager of a robotics program at NASA, “we c an't yet give a robot enough ‘commonsense’ to reliably interact wi th a dynamic world.”Indeed the quest for true artificial intelligen ce has produced very mixed results. Despite a spell of initial opt

imism in the 1960s and 1970s when it appeared that transistor circu its and microprocessors might be able to copy the action of the hum an brain by the year 2010, researchers lately have begun to extend that forecast by decades if not centuries. What they found, in atte mpting to model thought, is that the human brain's roughly one hund red billion nerve cells are much more talented-and human perception far more complicated-than previously imagined. They have built rob ots that can recognize the error of a machine panel by a fraction o f a millimeter in a controlled factory environment. But the human m ind can glimpse a rapidly changing scene and immediately disregard the 98 percent that is irrelevant, instantaneously focusing on the monkey at the side of a winding forest road or the single face in a big crowd. The most advanced computer systems on Earth can't appro ach that kind of ability, and neuroscientists still don't know quit

e how we do it.

1. Human ingenuity was initially demonstrated in .

A. the use of machines to produce science fiction.

B. the wide use of machines in manufacturing industry.

C. the invention of tools for difficult and dangerous work.

D. the elite's cunning tackling of dangerous and boring work

2. The word “gizmos" (line 1, paragraph 2) most probably means .

A. programs.

B. experts.

C. devices.

D. creatures.

3. According to the text, what is beyond man's ability now is to desi

gn a robot that can .

A. fulfill delicate tasks like performing brain surgery.

B. interact with human beings verbally.

C. have a little common sense.

D. respond independently to a changing world.

4. Besides reducing human labor, robots can also .

A. make a few decisions for themselves.

B. deal with some errors with human intervention.

C. improve factory environments.

D. cultivate human creativity.

5. The author uses the example of a monkey to argue that robots are .

A. expected to copy human brain in internal structure.

B. able to perceive abnormalities immediately.

C. far less able than human brain in focusing on relevant in formation.

D. best used in a controlled environment.

V. Translation from English to Chinese. (20 points)

Directions: Please translate the following two passages into Chinese and write your English versions on the ANSWER SHEET. The following is a sample passage.

It is as though some giant’s hand were squeezing the trunks of th e trees, forcing the sap up and along the branches, for the blossom s eems to squirt into the air.

There have been other Mays in other years, but never has there been so much blossom. The bees are bewildered by it. A few small bush-app les which were as austere as walking sticks when I planted them only two months ago are now in full flower, and look like little girls jus t off to a carnival.

Peach, cherry, plum and apple strain into the air; all the trees in the orchard are out together, and for once, no clumsy wind has shorn or rain washed their frail, enameled, fine petals down into the lech erous hands of grass.

What flower is there as delicate as this flower that grows out of a gnarled old tree with its trunk all twisted and its bark all blister ed? It is a paradox. Beauty is always a paradox.

全国2018年1月高等教育自学考试 英语写作基础试题 课程代码:00597 I. Correct the errors in the following sentences.(改写病句)10% Example: After seeing an offensive mouthwash ad on television .I resolved never to buy that brand again. After seeing an offensive mouthwash ad on television, I resolved never to buy that brand again. 1.Those berries are poisonous don’t eat them. 2.Our city’s buildings are not as modern as your city. 3.To get ready for the trip, all the things she needed were put into a suitcase. 4.He told me that Mary had returned home for a week. 5.I read the book on the bus which did not interest me at all. II. Read the following passages and identify the topic sentence in each by underlining it.(阅读以下每段文章,然后在每段文章的主题句下划线。)20% 1. The biggest problem in ancient DNA reserch is getting the DNA in the first place. The favorite material to work with is bone, and a small chunk of it is best. Cells can lie inside the hard bone structure waiting to be liberated after the calcium has been dissolved away. That’s the easy bit. Getting the DNA out, what little of it that remains is horrendously difficult and many teams have succumbed to pitfalls in the past. The rule is that it has to be done in a clean room better than used to assemble spacecraft to go into deep space, and it has to be done away from any other source of potentially contaminating DNA. 2. Names usually have origins, especially for Indians. Indians with distinctive physical characteristics, might be given names such as Big Foot or Crooked Leg. If there had been a big storm on the day of a baby’s birth, the baby might have been named Thundercloud. Grey Eagle, Red-Dog, Big Bear, and Spotted Wolf are examples of Indian names after animals. 3. Many TV commercials imply that a woman’s self-esteem depends on her cleaning ability. In one commercial, we see a woman terribly upset because her guests find spots on her glassware. Countless other commercials blur out the message that a woman will pass muster as a person if her kitchen floor gleams and her toilet bowl is blue. This idiocy must work, because the images of women scrubbing, moping, waxing and smiling keep on coming over the air. 4. As human beings, we are constantly in the stage of change. Our bodies change everyday. Our attitudes are constantly evolving. Something we swore by five years ago is now almost impossible for us to imagine ourselves believing The clothes we wore a few years ago now look strange to us in old photographs. Everything is changing. This is a prediction I can make with absolute certainty. 1
